A perverse question here.

Has any coach died (apart from Phil Walsh) while still coaching?

I believe this is a true story - at the beginning of the 1933 season Hawthorn decided to give the team a bright new look, and reversed the jumper to a gold with brown yoke. All this did however was give them another unfortunate nickname, the Mustard Pots, and the guernsey proved unpopular with supporters.

Following the departure of coach Jim Jackson the new arrival was Fred "Flops" Phillips. A champion key position player with a great sense of humour, big things were expected. Tragically however, a boil on Phillips' elbow became septic from the dye of the new Hawthorn jumper and he died - just one week before the season began.

How Hawthorn Got Their Name

On Friday evening the League granted permission to Hawthorn to revert to their previous uniform, not to their original one. as believed by some people. Hawthorn's original colors were similar to Melbourne—red and blue. When they transferred from the Victorian Amateurs to the Association they adopted brown and gold. In 1933 they altered to yellow and gold, but it was not impressive, so they will again be seen in the brown guernsey with gold V, narrowly missing a name that was likely to stick—"Mustard Pots."

Mr. "Tod" King told me that some time ago a paper referred to the fact that the hawthorn in the old country blooms in May, hence the name "Mayblooms" which has stuck to Hawthorn,

SUDDEN COLLAPSE LAST NIGHT.

F. Phillips, the Old Scotch Collegian and St. Kilda player, who was a few weeks ago appointed captain and coach at the Hawthorn club, died suddenly at his home last night following pneumonia and gangrene.

It was known yesterday morning among Victorian Football League officials that the popular player was dangerously ill, and he was then not expected to live beyond Sunday. In the last few weeks he has been in charge of training operations at Hawthorn, and on Easter Monday he strained the muscles of his leg. At the same time a huge boil developed on the player's arm, and he contracted a serious cold.

It was learned to-day that the cause of the death of the well known League footballer Fred R. Phillips, was blood poisoning, which followed a boil on the eibow. The boil developed two or three weeks ago, but it was not until yesterday that any serious consequences were anticipated and deceased entered a private hospital.

Thanks Ron the Bear. As Crowcher noted, Fitzroy were inaccurate again in 1964, but while their inaccurate 1912-1914 team were premiers in 1913, the 1964 Lions finished last after failing to win a game all season.

The only round in which each team kicked 100 points is an obvious place to start looking. It was round 10, 1982 and the average per team equals 128.58. Whether this is the overall record I am not sure. I won't be surprised if one of the database kings provides a definitive answer quite soon.

If a player is getting ready to have a kick, and then the siren sounds, and he chooses to kick it straight to the umpire, or just boots it aimlessly into the air, and if he hasn't gone over the mark and thus played on, does that still count as a kick?
