So tonight is the top of the ladder clash with Adelaide taking on Geelong.

This got me thinking, does anyone know the highest number of 1st vs 2nd (top of the ladder) games there have been in a single season?
 
The Herald-Sun today reported that in yesterday's Essendon vs North Melbourne game, both Tom Bellchambers and Majak Daw amassed 34 hit-outs, though the AFL website is giving Daw 33. My question is: What is the highest total of hit-outs shared by two opponents in a game?
And what is the highest total of possessions shared by two opponents in a game?

First quick glance, found this in 1966
Skilton and Sharrock had 32 disposals each for South Melb v Geelong respectively

The best I can see is Dan Hannebery (Sydney) and Lachie Neale (Fremantle) with 41 disposals each in the 2016 Rd. 19 clash between their sides. Josh P. Kennedy (Sydney) and David Mundy (Fremantle) went close in the same game, with 45 and 44 disposals respectively.

Edit: The best "matching effort" by teammates I have is St Kilda's Leigh Montagna and Jack Steven with 47 disposals each, in the 2013 Rd. 23 game against Fremantle. A somewhat infamous game, that one!

I'm fairly confident this is the answer, and it's quite a recent one!! Jarrod Witts (Gold Coast) and Brodie Grundy (Collingwood) had 42 hitouts each in their 2017 Rd. 17 clash at Carrara!

2016 Rd. 7 saw Jonathon Griffin (Fremantle) and Shane Mumford (GWS) get 41 apiece in their game.
 
Buddy won the Coleman in 2008, 2011 and 2014 and may win it in 2017.

How many instances have there been of players winning the Coleman Medal only every third year?

Wouldn't think there would be too many. Most serial winners (Lockett, Lloyd, Gehrig, etc) have done it back to back.

Apart from Franklin, only Coventry has won it three times, three years apart (1927, 30, 33). But Coventry also won in 1928-29, and those technically aren't "Colemans".

Winning 10 seasons apart would be a feat.

So I have discovered something unique then. You little beauty
 
This will be the 5th time that Adelaide have finished in the top 3.

In the previous 4 instances, not once did they win 2 finals in a row, let alone win 2 finals at all.

Only in 1997 and 1998 did they win more than 1 final, both times thanks to a poor finals system (which lasted just 1 more season).

and that one more season saw my Blues finish 6th, get murdered week one and still make a grand final. Was such a weird finals system.

Billy Longer is famous for having less than one kick per game.

He's had more kicks in New Zealand than in New South Wales, Tasmania, Western Australia and south Australia

Note, he's only played the one game in New Zealand getting a career high 13 kicks.
