What was everyone's thoughts on the SME's game on Saturday night? He contested when he needed to, added a bit of height to the forward line without setting the world on fire. (The rest of the team took care of that Go dees).

I am struggling to make up my mind whether having Bail in, providing even more grunt and work load through the midfield to the half forward line is better than having another tall forward in there to take a tall defender out so Petterd and Miller can be isolated. Thoughts?

I don't think the question is whether we need the extra tall, but rather who should be that extra tall.

Newton, PJ and Stef might juggle the role for the next couple of months, but ultimately this is Watts' spot surely?

Definitely agree that the position is Watts' but I guess I'm wondering whether the SME would have got a game had Bail not been injured. I know Bail was listed but it ended up working out pretty well for us. Bail has been pretty good over the last few weeks, but if he is in, we lose that extra tall in the forward line..

I didn't think Martin's contribution was very good in an otherwise great game. Bate finally starting playing honest, purposeful football, perhaps Martin needs another couple of games as well to get there, I guess I'd stick with him if the only other choices are Miller and Newton. But whilst the rest of the squad played with confidence, he looked a little nervous as the tall target when the ball was heading his way and Brisbane defenders charging in his direction.

He was okay, but you can't expect too much of a tall playing his first game back at AFL level.

He needs a few games to get back up to speed before a reasonable assessment can be made.

If Bail is fit next week then Stef goes back to Casey.

I would keep Stef with North playing 3 ruckman in there team we need someone to give Jamar a real rest i dont think Dunn is good enough prefer him roaming the forward line/midfield was very good on brennan.

Bail to come back in for Bennell who was quiet on the weekend, only if Bail is 100% though must have dodgy quads i wonder if it was the same one as last year.

Honestly thought SME was a bit of a liability around the ground, he looked slow and awkward many a time.

BUT he does have useful height. Perhaps keep him in against NM as Future Star said because of their tall side and then have this discussion next week. IMO you need to be able to prove yourself over more than one game.

Besides, I'd love to see SME up and about, really like the kid.

Stef was looking MUCH larger than i remember him being. And i do like having that one player with genuine height playing forward. Cant judge him off the one game, but didnt see him do anything special

I'd hate to see him dropped on that effort. Just watched the game again and as the commentators point out he just competes. Also had a couple of great taps to advantage when in the ruck.

I didn't see him as a liability around the ground at all, took some good marks and also ran well. I think we need to stay with him at this stage as he has the ability to be a good 2nd ruck.

Bail comes in for Dunn. No way Bennell should be dropped, he is really starting to develop now. Didn't have a lot of it on Saturday night but I was surprised at how good his evasiveness is.

Of those 3 ruckman only McIntosh is any good.

Bennell I thought was good with some of his dodging and weaving was pretty good against the Lions, almost was un-tacklable and doesn't deserved to be dropped.

Dunn has done extremely well pinch hitting in the ruck and swapping Martin for Bail gives us another goal kicking option as I don't rate Martin as a goal threat at AFL level.

Martin actually got about 14 hit outs from limited ruck time. I do feel that once the ball hits the ground the best he can do is create a stoppage. His only chance of kicking goals is taking big marks within about 30 metres of goal.

Yeah nothing fantastic IMO but what he did do well is create a contest in the forward line. At one stage he created a stoppage from a 3 on 1 contest.

Sure its not much, but its much more than Miller was doing, and he also runs in the ruck for a while too.

He stays in. :thumbsu:

I'd like to withdraw this statement, just get him out of the side.

He offered absolutely nothing, and is far too soft to make it as a big man at AFL level if he continues to play like he did today.

Better than Juice/Miller.

Would much prefer Juice.
