Toast Stephen Wells

Shouldn't be boasting so early, I don't think. None of our draftees from last year have played a game yet, so we're no better off at this point.

If you want to make reactionary calls, we could ask why we skipped Luke Dunstan, who was phenomenal for the Saints over the weekend, and instead picked a guy coming off a broken leg who most thought would go much later.

Oh? Did he like drugs and parties, too?
You best ask the people at the Magic Millions. They'd be better placed to answer this question.

lots we can toast stephen wells for without the need to make light of a young guy struggling with life.

Well in fairness to all AFL clubs, they passed him up completely in 2012 because he was "struggling" although it was probably closer to him showing no genuine dedication to the sport, rather getting out on the piss all the time and making an arse of himself like most other teenagers - hardly "struggling" so much as "struggling to commit". He also made a high profile declaration that he was ready to put in, and said moving to Melbourne would be the best way to do that. This kid will look back on this decision in a few years with huge regret, for sure.

kind of puts blokes like Morabito and Menzel into perspective when you get young men entering the league who don't take it seriously because of their immaturity or lack of dedication to nutrition, fitness and preparation in readiness for 10+ years of AFL. Menzel would kill to have Garlett's knees just so he can live his dream of playing on the MCG once again.

Not gonna call Garlett weak as we have no idea what he's been through or what his current mental state is but it's sad to see Menzel spend all day doing his pathetically long and boring rehab while blokes like Garlett think it's all just fun and games as he heads back home to get back on the grog this coming weekend.

and what's even worse is that 10 years from now, people will be talking about Garlett and lumping him in the same 'what if' basket as that of Egan, Snell or similar players who actually gave it a crack but were cruelly forced to exit so suddenly because of shocking injuries.
Don't worry they won't even be talking about him in 5 years time let alone 10.

It's still early- let's reassess this in say... 5 years' time.

Mate, if it takes 5 years to work out if you've made a correct choice then you can safely say you probably haven't.

2-3 tops, should allow for informed valuation, otherwise you're in the wrong business. Checkout Jackson McCrae story, AFL.com.

Overlooking Dunston doesn't seem a great decision at this very early stage

And Dunstan probably wouldn't have got a game for us either last week and some of our supporters would have been sooking that we drafted him instead of whichever other player got a game for a rubbish team in Round 1 and got 20 disposals. Top four teams don't usually make first round picks based on who will be able to get a game for them in Round 1 of the next season.

Garlett was a low risk for Hawthorn and it didn't work out. There will probably be 6-10 others drafted before him who will never play a game either. No harm done and they will have learnt a lot from the experience. To be honest, I don't really see what this has to do with Wells, or Geelong, at all. 17 other teams didn't pick Garlett either.

Numerous players in our best 22 are apparent exceptions to that rule.

Are you saying the masses have decided they don't like him???
Haven't seen any comments that back that up, try again.
I know your alluding to brown as you do, but the anti browns did not turn on him instantly at all.

Good job of completely misunderstanding me. The point is he's played 0 senior games, but plenty not only want him in the team but insist he's in our best side. How that can be determined is pretty tricky at this stage.

On this I agree with you, but I questioned you on this little gem
"Especially if the masses decide they don't like them. Then it must be instant!"

I knew that crap would come up oh why did we not get dunstan blah blah blah just waite until Lang gets a going before that b-ll sh-t comes up.think we have a few crossdress on this board or just total wingers that just love to winge

No, he's a gun AFL forward Partridge, were have you been lately haven't you noticed?
No need to hit the panic button on Dunston, Saints have a weak midfield with Hayes and Montagna out so that's why we got to have a look at him so quickly.

Ah!..Rising Star first game?...not bad! From all reports they wanted to fit him in the 22 regardless of injuries, Richardsons love child.

Bit wary about where to post considering the outcome but this seems right..

Just watched the interview - http://www.geelongcats.com.au/news/2014-11-25/2014-draft-order-finalised

Impressive that Wells (and associates) is doing his homework up to 2 years b4 the draft, seems that having played snrs in their draft year is an advantage and he looks for players that have several dimensions to their game.

On the basis of what I learned here and the above only scratches the surface, the percentages lie in favor of us taking either a key defender or midfielder.

Like the title of this thread, I trust.. :)
