Discussion Steven Baker's Chest

I do think his best is behind him. That doesn't mean that he no longer has the ability to play quality football. He has been ok this year, not spectacular, but serviceable. In the Freo game, he hardly looked interested and let Ballantyne run amok. I hope he responds on Friday night but it is the beginning of the end for the little dog on linoleum.

Didn't I read this in 2008. Gees he doesn't get to lose much form before he's written off. No one is pushing for his spot ATM.

Once again the media has taken the lead from BF - and from IWAGD no less!

Through 12 years and 190 games of hard-nosed commitment to St Kilda's cause, the label attached to Steven Baker has been printed in indelible ink. ''Let's not beat around the bush,'' Baker says of how he is perceived from beyond the bubble. ''An arseh*le.''

''I know when I'm walking along inside the boundary, my spectators are saying, 'We love you Bakes', and the opposition's are saying, 'I wanna kill ya, Baker!','' he says. ''I don't really mind.''

He was asked to tag a TAC Cup opponent who had been averaging 30 possessions. ''What's tagging?'' Baker asked, then kept him to a handful of touches and went home with the game ball.

Physically, too, things have had to change. Keeping that up-on-his-toes, chest-out, come-and-get-it frame in battering-ram condition gets harder by the year; the (v) for veteran next to his name this season is a scarcely needed reminder of time's passing.

Should he run out the next nine, he'll then run out against Adelaide in round 22 a 200-game player.

I don't LOL all that much really but I did then.
My opinion is that it's Blakes development that made Maguire expendable.

I can only take heart that Chris#12's comment has probably garuanteed that Baker has three or four good years left in him.

Just reward for a great team player. 200 games means a heap of benefits and kudos once your in retirement.:thumbsu:

Haha nice one Squizz. Yeah ok, I was wrong about Blake, he has improved out of sight. But the Blake thing wasn't about him being too old and coming towards the twilight of his career. It was about him being no good. It's a different situation. Just for the record though, I'm not wrong about Dempster.:thumbsu:

Haven't seen much wrong with Baker's performances this year, and I don't get too concerned about one game - particularly at Subi where maybe there is a query as to whether he can cover a big ground well enough in perfect playing conditions.

I'd be amazed if you don't want him in the team when playing a benchmark side like Geelong at the MCG with a forecast of 13 degrees and windy with showers.

Whilst I haven't seen much that suggests Dempster has come back well from his knee injury to date, I'm a long way from writing him off at 26yo.

Over the years Baker hasn't featured too high on my list of rankings for the Saints players but this year he's climbed the list a little. He still kicks backwards a little too much for my liking but never the less a handy player & worth a spot in the team...
... so what's this thread about? I still haven't got the grasp of it yet. Maybe it's similar to Davey Jones locker?

Given his instant reaction to hand off, I'd say it's a team instruction. He probably also feels he can be more effective in blocking for the kicker rather than trying to spot up a 40-50m pass.

If you're going to psycho-analyse a thread started by IWAGD, it'll be a while longer until you nut it out. Having said that, the OP would probably rank in front of "the only crime Milney is guilty of ..." :D

Dat chest.

Chris - reckon you're battling on that one too. Plenty of real solid defensive efforts tonight and a great inclusion by Lyon (particularly after Baker's eye was split open behind play).

Yep.

There was an article in the Herald-Sun a few weeks ago that referred to how often Baker, Blake and Dawson kick short. It's clearly a team directive to get the ball into the hands of the better users of the ball and the players that like to run and carry.

You only have to look at his performance against Steve Johnson last night to see how valuable he still is for us.

Wish he'd plugged that goal.

Maybe we can chip in and buy him and eye-patch so he can practice kicking at goal with one eye.

Dal sticks the boot in:

He was also appreciative of the efforts of back pocket Steven Baker, who was sporting a closed-up eye after a clash with Geelong half forward Steve Johnson.

"It's almost improved him!" Dal Santo said of Baker's spectacular shiner.

"He's a tagger, he's a niggler, that's what he has to do every week to get a game…"

"I found it hilarious," Dal Santo said of Baker's constant harassment of Johnson, "but it's not me. I would hate it."

Dal Santo was surprised to find that his usual tormentor, Geelong captain and tagger Cameron Ling, marked Lenny Hayes last night.

"I thought he couldn't find me for a minute!" Dal Santo joked.

Something pretty humorous i heard the other day is this:
Baker would possibly got less weeks if he had KO'd Steve Johnson at the beginning of the game, through say, a head high hip and shoulder (meaning Johnson could not resume playing). As long as he didn't committ anymore offences throughout the rest of the game, he would've got 5-6 for knocking Johnson out compared to nine weeks for a few slaps on the hand and neck.

MRP is a joke

Unbelievable as it sounds, if Johnson had not elbowed Bakes in the eye, I don't think too much would have come out of this game MRP wise. The Elbow simply highlighted (along with channel 7) that trouble had erupted and the umps had lost control. The MRP had to suspend Johnson for the elbow and poor old bakes copped his penalty because his eye highlighted what had gone before. Feel sorry for the poor bugger. This could cost him his career and the chance to make it to 200 games. It's time the MRP, Adrian and Andrew pulled their heads in and let football be football. By the way. Good win last Friday.

Think most Saints fans saw a 3-4 week whack in there - and of course the AFL had already set up the "Steve Baker Tracker" camera for all games. They have another one for Chris Judd which has some sort of rose tint over the lens - makes it kinda hard to see the incidents, but I'm sure they know what they're doing.

Someone on SEN ( might have been Brereton , not sure ) commented that both players were going at each other throughout the game, but both of them were being careful not to be seen by the umpires.
The Umpire would turn his back and wack. Obviously with video reviews this is a flawed tactic.
If that is the case though, it makes a mockery of the argument that Baker was victimising Johnson.

Seems more like a couple of old school boys having fun.
