I agree with this, but it still makes me sad.Chad is the poster boy for getting all the rewards early on based off his natural talent, then not doing the work to get the most out of it. The fact by 21/22 he was a dual AA, a BF winner and whatever else and by 28 that's the peak of career. Since the end of 2015 he has fallen off a cliff. That's on him, no one else.
At the end of 2018 we put it on him to get the most out of his talent and work harder from all accounts, something we also told Karl Amon, Chad sulked and wanted to be traded to Hawthorn, Karl stuck his head down and went to work. Now look at the difference, Karl is one of the elite wingman in the game and Chad is barely spoken about anywhere anymore.
If Chad did the gut running Motlop/Amon does, it would be a different discussion, but he doesn't and never will. At the time we were angry to see Chad go, almost 2 and a half years later from the trade I'd say the consensus is we are glad we let him go.
Karl Amon was told in his exit interviews that he was doomed to the SANFL, and that he might want to look for other opportunities. He was also told that if none were forthcoming, the club was happy to keep him, but that he was outside the 22. (PS: This came from his manager in interview on Trade Radio)It was actually the other way around - Amon asked for a trade but there were no suitors so he stayed, Wingard didn't want to be traded but was pushed out by the club.
No interest was shown in him, so he stayed. To his credit he chose to do something about that, & his rebirth as an elite player is one of the great unsung AFL stories, esp when you couple that with him overcoming Perthes Disease! One of my favorite players.
Just a reminder below of the battles young Karlos faced...
