Yeah, never really heard much of Ray's stuff tbh. So Stevie takes the cake for me.

Not doubting the undeniable brillance of the above two singers but what about Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Al Green, Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke to name but a few who all are great soul singers up there with both Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles.

I'll go with Stevie Wonder. A man born blind that can play upward of 12 instruments, compose/arrange/produce his own lyrics, be a great song-writer, sing like there is no tomorrow, and most importantly make a number of the greatest albums the world has ever seen, is a true musical genius, in every sense of the word.

Ray Charles was incredibly influential in what he did, and I don't want to take anything away from his beautiful legacy by pointing out what I love about Stevie Wonder. It's just that from a personal point of view, I like Stevie as an artist more, and believe he is one of the greatest artists to have walked this planet - possibly THE greatest.

edit: and it's fantastic to see the poster above me know about classic soul music (let alone name the artists!). I haven't heard much of Wilson Pickett's work though, any recomendations for songs/albums?

Marvin Gaye was a revolutionary - absolutely love him. I really enjoy listening to the other artists too. I love this thread haha

Two completely different artists with nothing in common but bad eyesight.
