Thank you Parramatta:D

Now playing in a Prelim. Final against the winner of Broncos/Dragons at Etihad Stadium Sat. night (time to be confirmed) 26th Sept. 09.
Friday night is booked up for VFL and Sunday is taken by the Victory.

The only downside of this its afl grandfinal day.

No Victory @ Etihdad til October. Sunday would be ideal.

I would like to make a once off thankyou to eels and broncos for:

ending the knights season
ending the 'seagulls' season
giving storm a week off
giving storm a home prelim
making dragons one step closer to a straight sets exit(i dont hate the dragons, just think it would be funny being the top team going out in straight sets)...

from this weekends results, storm have gone to favourites for the premiership, although i don't read too much into the odds normally, i just think thats funny...

So due to the Mcintyre finals system the 4v5 game basically came down to an elimination for the loser and a week off straight into the Prelim for the winner? I'm so glad that the AFL got rid of that system, even with the faults of the current AFL system.

only if teams below win..ie eagles would have been safe if eels had not won..

they wanted more games that mean someting,,ie nobody safe, but I think afl system is better..

or even bigger games like 1v2 3v4 5v6 7v8

and use same method as afl

That's the point of why it's so bad your destiny is in some other teams hands

Every game means something with the AFL system whether that's an elimination or a week off

it just means you gotta win to guarantee..i can see the merit

but agree it should be changed

The system rewards teams who win finals games and punishes those who lose.

The AFL system system rewards 2 of the week 1 losers and punishes 2 of the week 1 winners.
The two losers in the QF's played higher ranked clubs so deserve a home game against lower ranked clubs if they lose

I just like the certainty of the AFL system

1 & 2 = double chance and 2 home games
3 & 4 = double chance and 1 home game
5 & 6 = 1 home game

I'm not going to defend the AFL system as being perfect but for a top 8, 4 week finals system it's the best there is, but probaly the most fairest for a top 8 would be a 3 week finals system, with losers eliminated, but that's only 7 games compared to 9

1 V 8
2 V 7
3 V 6
4 V 5

Highest ranked V lowest ranked
2nd Highest Ranked V 2nd lowest ranked

Grand Final

Not sure what you mean by that. Could you please clarify? It's a lot better than the atrocious McIntye system.

I do prefer the AFL system, rewards teams for their form all season.. while the NRL can favour teams who only find form at the end of the season and get on a roll.

No way would Storm deserve to get knocked out if we lost to Manly.
Did Manly deserve to get knocked out?
The one flaw I have with the AFL system is that it doesn't reward the team that finishes on top. Basically there's little difference between finishing 1st or 2nd.
In the NRL system, top spot is guaranteed to progress and there is no such guarantee for 2nd (although an unlikely scenario).

Incorrect mate.

Neither 1st or 2nd can get knocked out.

Lowest two losers are eliminated. Even in a worst case scenario of 1 through 4 all losing in the opening week .... 3 + 4 would be eliminated.

The losers of 1 v 4 and 2 v 3 play the winners of the elimination finals in home finals. Therefore rewarding losing form in the finals.

Neither system is perfect, I personally like the idea of rewarding teams who win finals. The H&A's are about positioning yourself for a crack, the finals are about taking your chance. You don't take your chance, tough luck imo

Yeah you're right. I think both systems have their flaws. The fact that 8th have beaten 1st for the past two years shouldn;'t cloud the fact that is very, very likley that 7th and 8th will be eliminated and yet 5th (like Manly this year) continue when they don't deserve to.

One of the things I do like, and this touches on Cam's point about the H&A's ... only 1st & 2nd are gaurenteed a double chance.

For all the talk that the 4 v 5 and 3 v 6 clashes can be dead rubbers more often than not ... Given the structure of the system 4 v 5, then 3 v 6, then 2 v 7, then 1 v 8 - You do actually have to ensure you win the game to ensure your survival isn't left up to other teams.

Can't agree with that. There should be a reward for finishing higher up the ladder and the reward is a second chance.

The AFL system - old NRL system - is garbage. Why oh why you'd want that one is beyond me.

It's all about revenue of the AFL in week one. Big games. Big crowds. For what purpose? That's what the GF is for.

Just want to add that I think the week off will be the worst thing the Storm could've had. There goes all there momentum.

Nah i think we really need it this year.

Long year with all the rep footy, recent NZ trip, and almost every player with niggling injuries to worry about. You can also throw in the Inglis distraction a month ago. A week off will be just what they need. It's great that we will have been in Melbourne for a full three weeks too. :thumbsu:

It's on the coaching staff to make sure they dont go in underdone.

Well lets say we were using the AFL sytem, in theory of course the match-up and results would have been -

Home v Away (Winner)
Dragons v Storm (Storm)
Bulldogs v Titans (Bulldogs)
Manly v Eels (Eels)
Broncos v Knights (Broncos)

Would have left with Manly and Knights out (exactly the same as what happened) and Storm and the Bulldogs with the week off. Obviousaly alot could change depending on who your playing but in theory based on how they played on the weekend.

I presume in the case of the second week, the top fixture loser (1v4) plays the bottom fixture loser (5v6). Could be wrong, havent had a good look at the AFL system.

Week 2
Dragons v Broncos
Titans v Eels

The only difference being that the Dragons and Titans play away in the NRL system. In the end the best teams are going to go through, and those not good enough will get knocked out.
