Re: Stuart Dew, looking sharp!

Some interesting points.
Why the comparisons with Ablett? What is the sense in that? You may as well compare 500 other younger players?
Ablett is also a flake ..how is that good for a team? Character mean anything to you? Dont get me wrong, I dont mean to bash Ablett, in fact I feel for the Geelong supporters, not to mention the thousands of young footballers who are insulted at the guys flippancy of opportunity.

Dew was picked late in the draft where the choices for a quality player were extremely limited. So your argument for picking up a young unknown quality player is very unlikely.
What the Hawks got was a guy who could help guide/coach/mould a young group of guys. How many Hawthorn players have a premiership under their belt? How does a young unknown provde this 'same input' as you put it?

The coaching staff would be very aware of the need for balance in selection. Maturity in a team is an essential quality...not to mention a booming kick and bloody good bloke.

The reason for the comparison with Ablett is not because of their character but had he not been a father son selection he would have been drafted at around the same draft choice as Dew was picked up.

I for one would much rather have Ablett than Dew because of the potenital factor, Dew will never reach previous heights.

Re: Stuart Dew, looking sharp!

Stewy Dew is not looking sharp in that picture.

I don't think he's ever looked very sharp, he was always on the chunky side of fashionable. Still managed to be a somewhat effective player.

The modern game is very harsh on waddlers: we had Mark McGough who could play but the wrong body shape meant he was shipped off before long.

I like Dew and appreciate his fantastic kicking, I hope he does good things for the Hawks but its hard to see him being anything more than a bit-player in their likely finals tilt: maybe he can be like is Medhurst for us?. Thats OK, its not like they sold the farm to get him.

Re: Stuart Dew, looking sharp!

Describe the era in which Greg Williams played. Even though it is only 10 years since he retired the game has changed significantly since then. Even though Greg Williams would probably still be in the best 22 at most clubs today, there would be plenty of opposition coaches ready to exploit his lack of pace by rotating 2-3 run with players against him. Something he didn't have to worry about when he played.

BTW, Greg Williams had much more football smarts than Dew, but that wouldn't have been enough to see him dominate today, like he did during his career.

Which is the tragedy of the modern game, that blokes like him and Andrew Jarman, who was even slower, would struggle to make it. Not to mention nutcases like Jacko who made the game entertaining.

Your average non-Hawthorn BF Poster.

Yeah the difference being that the Hawthorn version has little pictures of Buddy and Hodge stuck to the inside lenses of their glasses.

Re: Stuart Dew, looking sharp!

The selection of Dew just makes me think that Hawthorn didn't think much of the draft. They took the compulsory minimum of three players, and used one of those to recycle a guy they could have taken with a fourth or fifth pick if they had liked the look of anyone else.

It will be interesting how it works out, certainly teams will try to exploit his lack of pace and fitness by running off him, and he has the skills to hurt them by kicking 60m goals or delivering to the other forwards if he is given that sort of space and time. I think the club will feel that even if he doesn't work out they will have got about the same out of him as they would have got from most of the kids left in the draft by that point.

Re: Stuart Dew, looking sharp!

stewart dew is a dud..would have to say the fattest and most unathletic thing in the afl..cant believe those clowns at hawks picked him up...i suppose they did play danny jacobs and he was worse than that dud from fitzroy and north, anthony mellington....stewart dew u fat heap of lard just go back to the pub you pig.
and you hawk fans who think he is worth anything you are a bunch of fools and i cant wait till the game he comes back...he will be kickin back on the pine eatin a hot dog or crunchie before half time and then come on and get nothing but a beer thrown at him...worst ever

What did Dewy ever do to you? :p

On a serious note, he will go on to play more games than 90% of players drafted after him. He has done everything asked of him so far. Looking forward to seeing him play in the near future.

Re: Stuart Dew, looking sharp!

The beauty of Stuart Dew is that he doesn't need to be super fit,as long as he sheds a bit more weight, all the hawks need to do is plonk him in that forward line and if buddy, boyle or roughhead miss the ball, stuey won't and he has that raking long left foot that could do some damage.
People laughed when the pies got, medhurst and thought the guy was washed up.Medders played very well last year, and will be in for a big year this year.
Dew will surprise! The hawks have already got the young fresh legs with the young team they have, dew will just be the bonus they need.

Settle down fella, you support a team that traded away a pick that secured Matthew Lloyd for Ridley and the pick that secured Hodge for Croad and you question Hawthorns drafting??????????????????????????
At a the end of the season, Freo will probably trade their first round draft pick for him.....:D

Re: Stuart Dew, looking sharp!

If Dew turns out to be a decent player at the Hawks how much would Clarkson’s stock rise as a coach. He was the main reason Dew was drafted.

First he arrives at a club which is crap to say the least. Was down at the bottom of the ladder and in a similar position to the Tigers.

Then he turns over nearly the entire list and goes with youth. With only a two year contract did not look for short-term fixes basically having a lot of confidence in what he was trying to put in place. Based on his football model instructs the recruiting staff to pick up the best talls and players who are a good size and must be accurate kicks in order for his style of play to be implemented successfully.

Until Dew Hawks have never picked up anyone over 22/23 under Clarkson’s rule so if Dew turns out good how great is Clarkson’s football brain. He will be a premiership coach with the Hawks one day and will be admired by the football world as one of the best coaches going around.

It's all coming together nicely :thumbsu:

Re: Stuart Dew, looking sharp!

A Fremantle and Tiger supporter walk into a bar and start talking about how other teams have supposedly drafted duds.

No punchline needed.

Was it Farmer, Tarrant, Johnson or Soloman that through the beer ?

If you are going to attempt humour, at least get basic spelling correct.

And as for the Dew picture, he is still a way off being where he needs to be. But as much as I have slayed the chunky monkey in the past, his weight is coming down so I congratulate him for that.

Re: Stuart Dew, looking sharp!

Dew is a premiership player and is one of the best kicks of the footy in AFL. He was 125 kg's and is now down to around 100 kg's. Losing 25 kg's in a couple of months shows his determination, discipline and focus on meeting the measures set by Clarkson and Hawthorn. To me it shows he is damn serious and there will be alot of egg on many faces by the end of the year. Keep it up with the fat jokes but when he plays your team and pumps goals from 60/70 metres out the jokes will turn into misery. I can see this working for the Hawks and just remember Port wanted this man to continue he was not pushed or asked to leave footy.

Re: Stuart Dew, looking sharp!

Fact - Dew will play more senior games than any player picked 46 or higher (2007 draft) over the next two years.

Now that is a wasted draft pick!!!
