Have noticed that the Geish and Walls aren't exactly held in the highest regard by most tiger fans - can anyone give a brief overview of why? I was pretty young at the time, maybe 7-8? Just curious as to why they are generally loathed? Didn't Geish get us to 9th and the cusp of the 8?

Did they do something to set us back many years?

No-one liked Walls from the start because he was a Carlton player so he was always on a hiding to nothing.

Gieschen get the ass from Geelong for white anting their coach and it could be argued that he did the same to Walls (who it has to be said had lost the playing group). The only reason Giesch got the job anyway was because he moved the huddle next to the cheer squad at Princes park in the last (?) game of the year and everyone went nuts when we won.

People forget that we had better players than Maxfield at the time. And the truth is he was somewhat flashy and one dimensional (as wingers tended to be). Also at the time we had a young Richo, Knights, Free, Broderick, Gale, even bloody Daffy. These players were all ahead of Stuey and I suspect this is why Sydney were able to pounce.

But do not underestimate the effect of that prick Brown. He always hated Northey and was undermining him, including approaches to Sheedy. Northey shafted us; he had another year of his contract left. The club should have sided with Northey and told Brown to **** off, but Brown was always a bully and must have had at least some support at board level. In the end Northey bailed with a year to go, starting a chain of **** up coaching appointments that led all the way to Wallace.

They are generally loathed purely on what has transpired since they were shown the door.

Thanks Cogga - as in they may have left the club in a bad way/shape for the coaches who came after? Or are they just sort of loathed for being coaches who failed to turn the club's fortunes around during a pretty poor 30 odd year patch?

you just need to see how bad the umpoires have been for last 8 years to know how much of a dufus geischen was as for walls well ???

Haha, maybe I'm paranoid but I always have a suspicion the umpires have it in for us. Could be Geish getting back at us or something :D

wow, thanks for that tigerdan - really appreciate the insights. I've never really researched that period but seems that the club really f**ked up with Northey and that caused the downward spiral.

Was Brown the president at the time? Sounds like he almost is the catalyst for what made the club mediocre for so many years.

At 1:35, this is what Maxfield use to do

NOTE: some fair commentary by Bruce too!

I had to bloody leave this game.Band members came to collect me because they were worried I'd miss the start of it with Richmond playing.I remember walking in the carpark hearing a roar thinking we won the game but it was the Bombers who scored the goal to draw the game.Maxfield's goal was the last I saw. What a game that was and we turned the corner. Then Northey left and Maxfield went too.I was driving on Plenty Road in Mill Park when I heard the news.Nearly died.
Then we had the potatoe era of spudness.Years of beer abuse those years haha.
Puts hairs on the back of the neck that commentary.

WE lost our identity.
KB refused to come back to the club.
Coaches coming and going.
You would hit a brick wall as a supporter then face two more later lol.
Thank bloody Christ for Gary March and Benny Gale.

Thanks Smasha. I've heard some richmond fans say that the biggest cause of our extended struggling was the old club culture where we supposedly ate our own/burned too many bridges in the quest for immediate success.

From the little I know, Benny G and Gary March have more or less corrected the ship and turned it into a professional football club that is run like a proper business should with clear expectations, lines of authority, accountability etc.

Can't help but feel the Blues have a bit of a boy's club arrangement that might explain why they have seemingly stagnated in recent years. Certainly wouldn't complain if they wallowed in mid table mediocrity for a few years! :D

KB was underresourced when he coached Richmond. He got the sack as coach and didn't come back until all the board that made that sacking had left Punt Road.
We were mismanaged.

It does take very strong people though to run a club as passionate and heart on the sleeve as Richmond has always been.

Agreed - that's why I'm glad we have professional and passionate richmond people like Gale and March at the helm. They know the club, the fans, the culture, the tradition and the expectations and have to balance that with the business needs on how to make the club the best in the comp and how to crawl out of the hole we've been in for far too long.

Some people say it's best to get decision makers with no emotions tied to the club but I reckon on the flip side, having those connections and love for the club ensure they make the best decisions for the club and fans, not just what their business skills suggest.

Brown was never president of Richmond, in fact I don't think he was ever even on the board. I think he was an advisor or something like that.

He had a reputation as a stong man in the 70s when the RFC was full of strong men. There was great footage of him belting some Carlton players back when he played for East Perth and everyone loved it. But the fact is he played 14 games in total for Richmond - that's less than Jayden Post - but his reputation was of a 200-gamer. He coasted off that reputation for years, because in the 90s, it wasn't that long ago that we'd been a powerhouse full of tough bastards and we all wanted it to happen again.

The fact is he was a bully and a thug and there was a famous interview with Northey's missus where she called him that, and said "ask anyone in WA and they will tell you!"

I have no doubt that we would have made the finals in 96 under Northey. We may well have extended his contract. Mal Brown set us back at least 5 years with his shenanigans, and you could argue as many as 15.

I don't want that guy to ever have anything to do with the RFC again, except in the capacity as an ex player.

Cheers TD, just did a wiki search on him - have heard the name Mal Browne mentioned with Richmond before but didn't realise he only played 14 games nor that he was a hugely controversial figure. I wonder how he came to be an advisor if he only played 14 games? Must have been a very strong character/individual.

Also, was surprised to see he is Campbell Browne's old man - I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Both controversial, hard players.

Just to add my bit to this:

NORTHEY
Yep, another one lost to paranoia and Sheeds. Northey's contract was up the next year, and so was Sheeds. He was convinced (probably rightly) that we were engineering things to approach Sheedy next year, so he demanded a one year extension from the club. We rejected this, adding to the paranoia and animosity. Then come in Brisbane with a decent cheque, and the rest is history.

Didn't like Northey not having the stones to let his performance be good enough to keep his job over Sheedy, and also didn't like our Sheeds obsession - not the only time it hurt us IIRC. Farce for all involved.

WALLS
On paper was what we needed. A better tactical coach to take this team to the next level. Two problems though. First, he didn't want to be there. To his credit, a year or two ago he conceded in hindsight his heart was never in the job, and he shouldn't have taken in on. Coaching is too be a gig to only commit half way. Secondly, I believe the players didn't buy into his approach, but I have much less mail on this.

DA GEISCH
So Walls is sacked mid season, and in desperation we elevate our assistant coach, Da Geisch, to the roll. Amazingly, he turned it around, and our boys started winning. We all got on the kool-aid too - final game at Princes Park. Banner said "Unleash the Geisch", he took the boys over to the fans at 3/4 time, and we had a massive come from behind win.

Problem was he was a one trick pony, and as his two years progressed, coaches figured him out. He still to this day brags that he has the best winning %age of any RFC coach since our golden age (he likes reminding his umpires at their functions), but the writing was on the wall.
