Now that I'm an old fart I've started playing Masters. Much to my horror at training last Thursday the dreaded "3 man weave" came out. For those of you who haven't had the misfortune to participate in this drill it goes something like this. In a group of 3 the ball is handpassed to the centre player who handpasses to one of the outside players running past who then handpasses to the other outside player who handpasses back to the centre player and on to the next group. It nearly always stuffs up and it drives me crazy.

Does anybody else have a training drill that they hate?

circle work is good if done properly, helps move the ball and can build fitness if done at high intensity. i agree with the three man weave but its a shocker.

we used to have one i think called 2nd handball reciever... it was a shocker... all it did was teach you to overpossess the ball and how to make continual skill errors...

A variation of lanework where you kick the ball, then recieve a handball from the bloke who marked the initial kick before handballing to the next group. The bloke who gave the handball back to you then has to get a handball off the next mark.

Agree! can't stand this drill! Usually some useless prick goes like a bull at gate and completely ruins the timing of the drill. I also hate when the last person with the ball tries to get another little handball in before reaching the other end and always runs outa of space.

I don't mind circle work. It's good, you just go at your own pace and try rack up as many touches as possible, without any opposition. Probably not the most beneficial drill but it's quite fun.

I agree, most handball drills are pointless. Coaches shouldn't emphasis the practising of skills as much as practising of game plans and tactics. More full ground drills, with players in positions that they'll play during a match, gives you the opportunity to run hard, look for space and read the play. There should be more contested work and more pack situations for talls to try and mark/spoil and smalls to crumb.

Circle work. One word. Pointless.

Competitive Circle Work .......better

I have for long time prefered end to end, where instead of going around the ground you just go straight down the corridor with 6 players and three opponets, kick the goal and start over. If the three players kick the goal against you 100 push ups are all yours.!!

We have perfected the 3 man weave. So much so that we do it with 3 diffrent angles now. On the bad days, we still get through about 15 minutes with only 2 or 3 stuff ups.

Are you serious?? You need to practise the short stuff as most lower grade footy has a lot of stoppages and short handballs involved in the game. Also to simply warm up before you start latching on to your 50m plus torey's to pack marks to avoid injury is quite important.

I have to disagree with the initial comments regarding circle work.
Circle work, if done properly, is one of the best drills you can do at suburban/ammo level.
It: 1. Improves fitness 2. Can simulate the way you want to play during a game 3. Teaches guys to get front and square, line of vision etc...
4. if ball hits the ground then what do you do

Most midfielders can simulate the way they want to play with this drill.

training? 3 man weave? playing overs - your kidding

try and bang a few torps through, dribble a couple of "daicos's" through from the boundary, finish with 5 min of "circle walk" then hit the cans :D

I swear the tackle bag is ridiculous! There would have to be at least 1 or 2 injuries a year coming from the old tackle bag.

Should use a bag instead of players as the target then. Seriously though, how do you get injured on the tackling bag?? Unless of course your a mud head that just wants to smash everything and has no technique whatsoever.

lol, well I have seen a few players roll over the bag and do a shoulder or even land awkwardly and do a knee.

A few years ago we had a army boy with a big mouth show up at training telling everyone how fabulous he was. Tackle bags out half way through training and he attacking it like a madman (also clear to all he had no idea but this stage) until he broke his colorbone and popped his shoulder. Never saw him again. :D

Any drill that didn't give you an idea of how the coach wanted you to play. ie, circle work. Circle work is only good for getting players to run past, so that helps timing, but it doesn't get you to run to the correct side for a right/left footer etc.

I've just started coaching and one drill I got taught was a drill that had four cones (one on each forward flank, one on each pocket). I kick it to a two players in the middle and get the others to run to crumb. Good drill to do either as a competitive or non competitive drill. Competitive drills allow one group to kick for goal, the others have then to kick it back to me.

Other drills that bored me, 5 star handball, triangle goalkicking drills and any running drills that didn't involve ball work.
