I don't see it that way. Clearly was always gonna be announced now. and the media got wind of it happening.
This happens for everything.

While in excited for the girls to have a great coach, this is the biggest blow our academy could take. Shaw has been a driving force in this last few years of the development of these gun kids
He is director of coaching in academy program and only for the last 2 years (and will still continue the role). Plenty more people deserve credit for academy players development plus more money were put into it.

I like him a lot but I am actually wondering how good he is as a coach :) It was pretty abysmal exercise with North as a senior coach. I am sure he learned from it. By his own admission he was a control freak.

Re: his role in the academy. As per the afl article.

"It's also understood Shaw will continue in his role as the director of coaching within the club's Academy program, and will combine his under-18 duties with his new title as senior AFLW coach."
Perfect 👌

The U18 and AFLW seasons don't overlap with one another so this is very doable for Shaw. Best of both world and a fantastic outcome for the club all round. Just hope he doesn't burn out.

AFLW: Rhyce Shaw on how the Gold Coast Suns academy influenced his return to coaching

“It was a really difficult time for me at North Melbourne, I don’t shy away from that,” Shaw said of his exit from the Kangaroos in 2020.

“I had my own personal issues going on and there were some football factors as well, but in the end we went our separate ways and the path that led me to where I am now has helped me get through that.

“The (Gold Coast) academy has been a fantastic platform for me to find myself as a coach again and be able to learn and experience new skills with a different group, hopefully that can transfer into the W space.

“We’re a bit untapped in this regard and it’s a really exciting time for our club in the female space, we’ve got some girls coming through that are top notch, not just next year but the year after that.”

Shaw had his first meeting with the playing group last night, and said he told Gold Coast’s newly drafted academy products that they had “inspired” him.

“The last few months working with them and the growth and the energy and passion I’ve seen them bring to training every night, it’s really lit something in me and that’s why I’ve chosen to go down this path (as a head coach again),” Shaw said.

“I’ve learnt new skills over the last three months that will benefit me a lot in the coming years. Those girls in the under-18s have been fantastic for me.”

“We had discussions early days and I didn’t think too much of it,” Shaw said of when the Suns first approached him.

“Over Christmas and then going through the 18s program and seeing the girls work, you could see that improvement and the drive that they’ve got to get better, I’m really excited about the Academy series to be honest.

“I really want to coach, I am a coach, and I want to do a great job for this football club.”
“I’ve been through this situation before in the men’s program and I understand and can learn from those experiences and can bring what I think is needed to the program in the female space,” Shaw said.

“It’s a really exciting time for our footy club, the girls had a bit of a down year last year, I think we can bounce back pretty quick.”

I think he'll do well. He would already have a connection with the academy girls and would understand how a girls program should be run. I think the fact he has been involved in the academy will help him as a coach like no other coach thats coaches these aflw girls.

He's the right man for the job. No doubt about it. I really appreciate how passionate he is about the Suns and seeing us succeed. That's refreshing to see.

I know a few of us had some concerns that we would potentially lose the secret sauce behind our recent academy success if we moved him into the AFLW role, but we know now that he is going to continue with the academy role as well as coaching our women's team. If it doesn't work out with our AFLW team then we can always just move him back into the academy role exclusively.

The future of our women's team is very obviously tied to the ridiculous amount of talent that's coming out of our academy right now and Shaw has coached every one of them to great success already. You can't buy that kind of experience and Shaw should be able to really hit the ground running with a player like Havana Harris.
