Kangaroos midfielder Andrew Swallow's sterling performance against the Cats has earned him the round 17 nomination for the NAB Rising Star award.

Swallow, who was recruited from East Fremantle and came to the club via its number 43 selection in the 2005 NAB AFL Draft, had a season-best 25 possessions in the Kangaroos' final Canberra game on Sunday.

The 19-year-old made his AFL debut this year in round eight against the Dockers and amassed 10 possessions, and in the past two weeks has strung together back-to-back encouraging performances and has kicked two goals.

Swallow attracted the attention of the Kangaroos as a highly-rated young gun that captained the WA under-18 side and was later named in the All-Australian team.

He has played seven games this season and has averaged 11 disposals a game – a statistic boosted considerably in his round 17 game against the Cats.

With the Kangaroos set to miss the finals, Swallow has been touted by Dean Laidley as a player who will get plenty of game time in the coming weeks. He becomes the first Kangaroo to become eligible for this year's award.

That's gonna cost you guv. I imagine he'll move up the ranks to be quite an expensive sponsorship soon.
