NEW TOUR ANNOUNCED​

For the first time in professional tennis history, the ATP and WTA Tour's will join forces to run under the same banner thanks to the support of the Sweet Tennis Association (STA). While the STA has had a couple of attempts to get tennis up and running in the past, the simplicity at which it has now been able to occur going forward makes it more possible than ever to be successful. Anyone can join either the ATP Tour or WTA Tour at any point, with very little knowledge of the sport itself. All players have to do is provide their name, and nation they wish to represent (as well as the Tour they look to play on). While fresh faces on Tour is ideal, the competition will run with the current Tour professionals, giving anyone unsure a taste of what is possible.

What is the Sweet Tennis Association (STA) Tour?

Essentially the STA Tour is run through an app called Playasport, where the Top 300 players (as of the end of last year) are input to play tournaments across 45 weeks. These are both the ATP Tour and WTA Tour, enabling players to pick which one they wish to take part in, and what nation they will represent. While the players involved have limited say in their ratings (sorted by the game), it will involve interaction and players can see how high they can rise up the rankings, and whether or not they can win a Grand Slam title.

From there, you will be added to the Tour and be provided with 10 automatic wildcards in the next 10 tournaments. From that point on though, you will be randomly assorted into draws. Fret not, you will see plenty of tennis action across the 45-week year.

What can I expect from the game?

The goal is to try and run through a tournament each week, though some weeks might be better than others to run through multiple tournaments. Once you sign up, it will usually be the tournament after the one about to commence that you will start in. Each touranment will be announced, with the entries and draws. At the end of each week, we will also note down the ranking bolters and sliders, and what is up next.

TOP THREE SEEDS STUNNED IN AUCKLAND BOILOVER​

AN INCREDIBLE first day of action at the 2025 ASB Classic saw the top three seeds defeated in stunning circumstances today. World number two and top seed Iga Swiatek, along with fellow top five players Jasmine Paolini and Qinwen Zheng all lost their opening round matches as just five seeds remaining, leaving the draw wide open in the top half. Seventh seed Marta Kostyuk suddenly became the top ranked player in the top half of the draw with the losses to Swiatek and Zheng, as the Ukraining navigated a massive scare of her own against world number 129 and qualifier, Sijia Wei.

The Chinese hope rose five spots on the live world rankings, having defeating the likes of Lin Zhu, Hayley Baptiste and Jessica Bouzas Maneiro en route to a main draw spot, only dropping one set across her qualifying draw. However Kostyuk got the job done in her first match of the year, moving well on the New Zealand hard court to win in three sets, 6-1 4-6 6-2 to book her place in the second round. She was joined in there by eighth seeded American Madison Keys who overcame Belgium's Elise Mertens 6-3 6-3, though all the talk was centered around the shock losses to the top three players.

Russian Liudmila Samsonova stunned top ranked talent and tournament favourite Swiatek with a 6-1 7-5 performance, shaking off a late challenge in the second set to post the win. The Pole was not the only major casualty of round one, with world number four and second seed Paolini bowing out to China's Yue Yuan 3-6 7-5 6-2 after being a set up, while third seed Zheng was a in a similar position before suffering a disappointing 2-6 6-1 6-4 defeat at the hands of Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. There was better news for the remaining seeds with fifth and sixth seeded Paula Badosa and Mirra Andreeva joining fourth seed - and top ranked remaining player - Barbora Krejcikova in the Round of 16.

The only qualifier to make it through the first round was former US Open winner Emma Raducanu who broke back into the Top 50 with the win, defeating world number 39 Marketa Vondrousova in a come-from-behind 5-7 6-4 6-4 victory to set up a huge clash with giant-killer Yuan in the Round of 16. Wildcard Russian Anna Blinkova was the lowest ranked winner on day one, with the world number 76 overcoming Clara Tauson to meet compatriot Samsonova in the next stage.

EUROPEAN DOMINATION IN NEW ZEALAND​

ALL EIGHT quarter finalists hail from European nations in an impressive Round of 16 result at the WTA 250 ASB Classic event. The remaining two seeds in the top half of the draw - Marta Kostyuk and Madison Keys - both fell, while the lob-sided remaining draw saw three seeds and qualifier Emma Raducanu in the bottom half of the fixture. Raducanu continued her run to defeat China's Yue Yuan - who had knocked off second seed Jasmine Paolini the day before - in three sets, and will now tackle sixth seed Mirra Andreeva in the next round. The young Russian had one of the only breezy days, putting away American Peyton Stearns convincingly 6-2 6-2 to advance to the quarter finals.

The only other two straight sets results saw Russian Liudmila Samsonova continue her run with a 6-4 6-3 triumph over compatriot and wildcard Anna Blinkova, while in the same half of the draw, Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska stopped half the quarter finalists being Russian with a strong 7-5 6-2 victory over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. It was a good day for the Czech's as well with Karolina Muchova and Marie Bouzkova both ousting Kostyuk and Keys respectively across three sets to reach the quarter finals. Fourth seeded Czech Barbora Krejcikova also advanced to the final eight wiht a 5-7 6-3 7-5 epic win over Amanda Anisimova who was one of three United States players to lose. Fifth seeded Paula Badosa was the other winner on day two.

BOUZKOVA BOOKS SEMIS SPOT​

AN-ALL Czech Republic semi-final awaits after Marie Bouzkova booked her place in the last four of the 2025 ASB Classic. The world number 44 was too good for Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska in the quarter final with a dominant straight sets win 6-4 6-3 to set up a meeting with compatriot Karolina Muchova. Bouzkova looked good against the dangerous Ukrainian hitter, while Muchova had a tougher assignment against world number 27 Liudmila Samsonova, coming back from a disappointing second set to wintg 7-6 1-6 6-2 and cement her place in the semis while rising inside the Top 20 again.

In the bottom half of the draw, sixth seed Mirra Andreeva snuffed out the run of qualifier Emma Raducanu, powering her way to a three-set win 6-1 6-7 6-3 to now take on fifth seeded Spaniard Paula Badosa. The world number 12 ousted fourth seed and 10th ranked Barbora Krejcikova 6-4 6-7 6-4 in the match of the day, the sole Czech eliminated on day three.
