Na shouldnt be in the olympics and if it is, open it up to all players.

Why shouldnt it? because it is the enemy of afl?
Let it stay, Brazil has never won an olympic gold medal at football. Great stuff. It causes great pain to the fifa and media pets.

Ooohhh, someone gets their knickers in a knot over Soccer/AFL. It doent have anything to do with the AFL. I have stated this earlier, if the Olympics isnt the pinnacle of your sport then it shouldnt be in the Olympics.

Then, if you are going to have it in the olympics then let anyone participate.

The Olympic football tournament is a compromise between FIFA and the IOC.

The IOC want football in the Olympics because it’s popular and generates a lot of ticket and broadcast revenue that helps subsidise less popular events. FIFA is okay with that because it adds to the profile of the sport, but allowing an all-age competition would threaten the World Cup.

With an age-restricted competition everyone’s happy.

20 years ago today I was at the Tennis watching the Woodies beat someone (i think it was the match to get into the gold medal game)

was a great vibe and as we were leaving someone heard we had won the gold for water polo and the walking crowd went mental and started singing the national anthem

On SM-G925I using BigFooty.com mobile app

To whoever said Olympic boxing isn't the pinnacle. Amateur boxing =/= professional. It is the pinnacle for amateur boxing and many boxers stay this route for multiple Olympic cycles rather than turn pro. There's quite a bit of money in sponsorships in their countries. Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Cuba (different reasons for staying amateur), Uzbekistan have great amateur boxing programs.

Amateur boxing is 3x3 minute rounds as opposed to championship boxing being 12x3 for example. Should definitely stay in the Olympics

But it's the Olympic Games. It's supposed to be the pinnacle. If Usain Bolt and co said 'yeah, nah all about the Diamond League now, gonna skip the Olympics' it would be a farce. But there are sports like golf and tennis where pros pick and choose if they care in a given year.

The history of the modern Olympics has always been about balancing the pinnacle of sport with the need to balance the books. Football is a necessary evil because you simply can't sell TV rights to most of the world without it.

History of any sport the last 20-30 years is $$$$$ - the sport itself is just a vehicle to make money

There really should only be about a dozen countries that should host the Olympics. That kind of doesn’t fit with their message of inclusiveness though.

In an attempt to influence the members of the international Olympic
committee on their choice of venue for the games in the year 2008, the
organisers of Liverpool's bid have already drawn up an itinerary and
schedule of events. A copy has been leaked and is reproduced below:

OPENING CEREMONY

The Olympic flame will be ignited by a petrol bomb thrown by a
native of the city (preferably from the Toxteth area) wearing the
traditional costume of shell suit, baseball cap and balaclava mask. It
will burn for the duration of the games in a large chip van situated
on the roof of the stadium.

THE EVENTS

In previous Olympic games, Liverpool's competitors have not been
particularly successful. In order to redress the balance, some of the
events have been altered slightly to the advantage of local athletes.

100 METRES SPRINT

Competitors will have to hold a video recorder and microwave oven
(one in each arm) and on the sound of the starting pistol, a police
dog will be released from a cage 10 yards behind the athletes.

100 METRES HURDLES

As above but with added obstacles (i.e. car bonnets, hedges,
gardens, fences walls etc.)

HAMMER

Competitors in this event may choose the type of hammer they wish
to use - claw, sledge etc. The winner will be the one who can cause
the most grievous bodily harm to members of the public within the time
allowed.

FENCING

Entrants will be asked to dispose of as much stolen silver and
jewellery as possible in five minutes.

SHOOTING

A strong challenge is expected from the local men in this event.
The first target will be a moving police van. In the second round,
competitors will aim at a post office clerk, bank teller or Securicor-
style wages deliveryman.

BOXING

Entry to the boxing will be restricted to husband and wife teams,
and will take place on a Friday night. The husband will be given 15
pints of Tennents while the wife will be told not to make him any tea
when he gets home. The bout will then commence.

CYCLING TIME TRIALS

Competitors will be asked to break into the University bike shed
and take an expensive mountain bike owned by some mummy's boy from the
country on his first trip away from home. All against the clock.

CYCLING PURSUIT

As above but the bike will be owned by a visiting member of the
Australian rugby team, who will witness the theft.

MODERN PENTATHLON

Amended to include mugging, breaking and entering, flashing, joy
riding and arson.

SWIMMING

Competitors will be thrown off the bridge on The Mersey. The first
three survivors back, will decide the medals.

MENS 50KM WALK

Unfortunately this will have to be cancelled, as the police cannot
guarantee the safety of anyone walking the streets of Liverpool.

THE CLOSING CEREMONY

Entertainment will include formation rave dancing by members of
the Liverpool Health in the Community anti-drug campaigners,
synchronised rock throwing and music by the Toxteth Boys Band.

The Olympic flame will then be extinguished by someone dropping
an old washing machine onto it from the top floor of the block of
flats next to the stadium. The stadium will be then boarded up before
the local athletes break into it and remove all the copper piping and
the central heating boiler.

I don't agree, but why not just make it like tennis and basketball? Pros can play if they want, some choose not to.

From memory the football event ticket prices are usually fairly low.

You may not agree, but that’s the reality - Latin American TV rights, for instance, wouldn’t sell without a football tournament.

You can’t make it like the World Cup and have unrestricted age allowances because it cannibalises FIFA’s greatest cash cow. FIFA would pull out straight away if that happened.

Late to this party but anyway- I was 20 when the Olympics were on. Watched them 24/7 basically, the whole duration- the fact i was sick as a dog and couldnt leave the house anyway probably helped.. was amazing- Beach volleyball win was my fave.

Went to the parade in the city when the athletes got back, was such a great atmosphere. Got to hold a gold medal.

Watched the opening ceremony at NY BAR & GRILL at Marion in Adelaide.

Sucking piss in a packed nightclub whilst feeling more national pride than ever before = ****en priceless.

The last Olympics I really cared about, not just because it was in Oz as I cared about Barcelona and Atlanta too.

I've just been meh about the Olympics since Athens in 2004, it's just not that big of a deal for me any more.

Slightly off topic, but Sydney Olympic Park is just dead. Nothing to do really before or after a sporting event there. Disappointing that it has not turned into some kind of entertainment district for the western suburbs. Parramatta has more of a vibe.
