Perhaps 'fans' would be a better term to use for this poll, rather than "supporters". To me supporters indicates that you actually do something to support the club, such as purchase a membership, turn up to a game, buy merchandise or at least regularly watch their games on TV. I doubt the majority of people counted in this poll would qualify as actual supporters of any of the clubs in it.

Say what you want about the poll's questionable credibility, but the actual results are pretty much how you'd guess it to be, it isn't worth getting angry over.
I wouldn't guess that the Lions have 200,000 more supporters than the Tigers.

I suspect the issue here is that most Richmond supporters don't own telephones and thus cannot be contacted for this important research.

Either that or it's an elaborate troll to place Richmond 9th on yet another list.

Either option sounds good to me...

I wonder if those conducting the survey ever look back on it and think ‘maybe we shouldn’t release this as it doesn’t give us any credibility’.

Somehow the Tigers have apparently lost 50,000 fans.

A sample Roy Morgan telephone survey:

Roy Morgan - "Hello, Roy Morgan here, we are polling Australians to see who is the most popular AFL team.
Sydneysider - "Hell, AFL?". Turns to wife, "What's the name of the team in Sydney that plays AFL?" Wife responds, "Swans, I think". Sydneysider tells Roy Morgan, "You heard the missus, Swans".
Roy Morgan - "Thanks for your response. It will help us greatly"

Manchester United used a similar polling methodology a few years ago to determine how many fans they had. They concluded that they had 1.1 billion fans or 1 in 7 of all people on Earth at the time. Bulletproof research.

Them counting all the african kids running around in old Ryan Giggs shirts they'd been given by Unicef was a flawed model to be sure.

It's true, I don't own a phone. I am posting this through telekinesis.

ROAR!
Whata farking success the AFL is. Just generally and eternally. Faaarking great. Can't handle too much more good news like this.

I don't care what anyone says...

"Collingwood Magpies", "Carlton Blues", "Essendon Bombers", "Hawthorn Hawks" and "St Kilda Saints" are not the correct names of these football clubs.

The correct names are Collingwood, Carlton, Essendon, Hawthorn and St Kilda.
Alternatively, they are known by their nicknames: the Magpies, Blues, Bombers, Hawks and Saints.

This is Australia. Not America.

Although the way this forum is run, you'd be forgiven for thinking this is China.
