TAC Cup 2009

Very windy conditions down at Oakleigh today, the Chargers keeping their faint finals chances alive with a win over Northern but will still need to win their three remaining games and hope other results fall their way.

The Chargers went scoreless in the last quarter after getting about five goals ahead at one point during the third quarter. Certainly much of the action was down the Knights end as the Chargers tried to do whatever they could over the final minutes to hold onto the win.

You'd think very few draftable players out there today given the absences due to school footy - and as far as I can tell only a couple of draft camp and screening invitees were out there. But always good to see the bottom age boys gave an opportunity and both sides had a couple of guys that look capable of stepping up to be elite TAC Cup performers in 2010.

The umpire who penalised the Knights for a 'rushed behind' early in the second quarter and handed the Chargers a goal on a platter should be banished to the bush. Quite possibly the worst umpiring decision we'll ever see - given that for weeks we've had the AFL saying that under pressure it is ok to carry the ball/force the ball through for a rushed behind. The Chargers asked the question and the umpire got bluffed...big time.

When our umpires f#&k up we banish them to the city ;)

Playing foward will get him on a list.
Correct. And my argument is that the selectors deprived him of the chance to show whether he could mark and kick goals against the best juniors in Australia. They never earmarked him as anything but a defender, despite the fact he was Calder's leading goalkicker in 2008 and one of the shining lights in the Cannons most abysmal season in a decade.

Vic Metro needed defenders, they tried guys down there and requested TAC Cup coaches do the same - some worked out and some didn't. That's their right. But when the experiments failed, the players deserved an opportunity to go back to their best position and remain in Vic Metro contention.

i recon Temel played in the backline because calder had a full squad to pick from at in the first 3-4 games and they had to put one of their talls in the backline. they have jake carlise, luke mitchell, daniel talia, serhat temel, matt watson and even jacob thompson all to choose from to play that chf or ff role.
if i can remember jake carlise was playin on a half forward flank at the start of the year!!

someones needs to stop the other team from kicking goals too.haha. and it worked for them at the start of the year so i recon we will see serhat back at center half back from now on!

I'll pay that, very sensible/logical post. :thumbsu:

Even the week the Cannons had all those talls back (Geelong game during school holidays) they chose to send Temel off to the VFL as the 23rd player for the week didn't they?

I think Carlisle was on the half forward line in the first few weeks. Watson might have played back some of those games too.

You just don't get where i'm coming from, do you.

When i say others (refer to my previous post), i mean the chosen few. The ones that were touted, invested in, scholarship holders, sent overseas, selected by the position holders. Persons paid to do their job, persons at TAC level and above.

Can't have temel leap frog the chosen ones, not at the national carnival. These are our boys, we selected them in our paying position.

You get where i'm coming from.

We can't have him on a backline ahead of Talia or Hartigan or up forward ahead of Fitzpatrick or Carlilse.

We will give Temel a taste, looked pretty good down back for cannons and we know he can play foward, but nah, no way, we will look like idiots. Can't leave out the chosen ones.

Temel was never in contention, not as a forward, back, ruck or rover.

Now we have done our job, never mind our chosen ones didn't deliver for whatever reason, some did. We'll see how our next batch of chosen ones go next year.

Temel will get on a list. Has a massive upside left in him and good luck to him after being dropped as a 15 year old. Didn't get the armchair if you know what i mean.

Should probably get some discussion going about this weekend - the bye weekend - and quite possibly the last chance some guys will have to play for their local clubs. I know some TAC clubs encourage their players to pull the boots on - particularly country clubs like Murray. And who will be playing as the VFL 23rd player - surely a great opportunity for some of the bigger names to get a taste of the VFL.

The AGS v APS game is on Sunday and so is the Herald Sun Shield Final so that will keep a few players busy also.

Thought I'd give some positive press to Shane Page.

Played the last two weeks with the Bendigo Bombers and has been absolutely outstanding.

Came very, very close to being picked up as a bottom ager last year, apparently the Hawks were weighing up between him and Savage with their last pick, and his Champs had been pretty solid up until he was injured at Casey.

I think Essendon will look very closely at him now, and no doubt Hawthorn will look to renew their interest.

Any clubs looking for development and future planning(WCE)(Melb)(Rich), may i throw a few GC17 names into the fray,

Trent Manzone
Todd Grayson
Nathan Spring
Rex Liddy

All great talents that look like not being contracted and have had a fulltime TAC year under the belt

It's good to see the promoted player rule working I guess and if it does help someone get drafted then its a good thing. Not quite sure VFL clubs are selecting the right players for it at this stage but hopefully down the track (and I'm talking 2010) we'll see the potential first rounders play a VFL game or two. It would have been good to see guys like Rohan, Butcher, Stevens, Cunnington, Martin who are being touted as potential first rounders to have been on show in senior VFL footy. I can't see it happening now, only three weeks left and some clubs are being pretty protective of workloads with carnival players at this stage of the year.

would be good i think alot of vfl clubs have commited to playing players off tac list last year for the rest of the season not all but particulaly the better teams

Yeah, which is fair enough because the rule got changed and allows them to do that. Say in the case of Top 4 teams in the VFL they are better picking a first year VFL listed player who could be part of their finals team than picking a TAC player who won't be. I don't agree with the rule change allowing that to happen though.

How do we see the Top 8 shaping up?

Current ladder:
Geelong 60
Dandenong 40
Gippsland 36
Eastern 36
Nth Ballarat 36
Gold Coast 34
Calder 32
Murray 30
Northern 24
Oakleigh 24

Round 18
Northern v North Ballarat
GC v Bendigo
Dandenong v Gippsland
Western v Murray
Oakleigh v Eastern
Sandringham v Calder

Dandenong v Gippsland the game of the round, Stingrays win and they all but secure a Top 4 finish, lose and they are back in the pack.

Unfortunately not a lot of key games left, most of them are top sides playing bottom sides.

Eastern I think will win two more (Bendigo and Western), and are a good chance of winning three (Oakleigh) so they should finish Top 4.

As long as GC stay out I'm happy :D

I reckon the TAC clubs also use it as a chance to promote some players that need more exposure. My undestanding is that it is a three way selection between the VFL & TAC clubs and the players (and his familiy). Perhaps even AFL clubs who may approach a TAC club and request to see a player in a VFL setting. I don't see that there would be any up side for a potential first rounder to play in the VFL. If they don't perform it could do damage to their reputation. I reckon most potential first rounders would decline such an offer.

from what ive head has happend a few occasions

What a load of bunkum !

WA, SA, TAS, NT players etc etc all play all play against men.

It doesn't seem to affect their draft prospects - Whether it is first round or fourth round.

I reckon the VFL clubs use it as a chance to get an extra man, and use it to try and play guys who will be there next year in the VFL.

And I think AFL aligned partners in some cases dont want to help showcase quality players for other clubs advantage.

Cynical huh?

Stop picking on the vm kids. I dont think you are being fair. They are only kids, they dont choose where they play. I am sure if asked they would play. They have no control over whether or not they are asked.

The inference from Boundary Boy was that ADVISERS suggest it isn't in the interests of potential first rounders to play as a top up player in the VFL.

My opinion is that it doesn't seem to hurt potential first rounders who play seniors in other states.
