How dare the government ban kids and teens from accessing social media. This isn't China. Albanese and Dutton should hang their head in shame.

My kids use social media to grow their friendships at school and to maintain their relationships with cousins interstate and old friends overseas. The government is ripping this away from them. They are both devastated.

Yes there are bad elements on social media. Just like there is at the train station where the kids need to catch the train between school and home. You don't ban kids from going outside (or is that next?).

You stop criminals and bullies. Not punish those because the government can't be bothered investing in the resources in stopping criminals and bullying.

Kids/teens will see these policies as unfair and some will try to go around them. Losing their support in rule of law. They will also encourage their friends to do the same.

There’s one reason they are doing it and one reason it’s supported by both parties.

Controlling the media has been part of the two major parties’ way of doing business forever.

They can’t control social media or what is on there, so it is enemy #1. We can’t have the voters finding out things we don’t want them to focus on.

They’ll do anything they can to weaken or curtail social media. Ultimately they’d love it if social media just left our shores altogether.

It was Morrison’s turn with that news bargaining code and now it’s Albanese’s turn with this shit.

Anything to bring it down and weaken it.

“Australia is small, if it’s too hard the social media companies will just block Australia!” people say. Are you kidding? The politicians would be in dreamland if that happened.

It’s all about controlling the message - they want to continue to do what they have done for decades.

It’s impossible of course - you’re just shovelling against the tide - but it’s their core business and an existential threat, so they’re doing it.

A teacher of my acquaintance in a public school had the following happen to them:
  • a child had their phone on them in class, which is against the law in public schools.
  • they had just been admonished for having their phone on them, and proceeded to text their father.
  • their father used the 'track my children' app installed on his child's phone to go to that classroom and berate her personally, in front of her class.
  • several other children used their devices to film this, and placed that footage on social media.

She has had to leave multiple schools and the area to escape that video, and she still has it come up from time to time in her classroom. A student who knows someone will find it; a student who's seen a lot of high school footage will recognise her, etc.

Tell me how you intend to solve this issue by stopping criminals and bullies, Seeds.

Charge the father?

On SM-A136B using BigFooty.com mobile app

If they push Digital ID, everyone will pay, because parents are too lax and lazy to police what their kids do or watch on-line.

Every one of those parents solution is to hand the kids smartphones and/ or tablets. How do you think it'll go? Kids are way too young and impressionable.

In other words, These politicians don't give a damn about kids. This is a Trojan Horse to push Digital ID on to everyone.

Sure. Doesn't change the fact that her image and the incident is now online and shared between the social media profiles of students country wide.

The injustice here is not solely the immediate threat to student and teacher safety.

The no phones law/school rule was already circumvented. Do you think there won't be a way to circumvent whatever the govt brings in?

I think there are always ways around pretty much any legislation/regulation/method of internet control. But that's not to say government shouldn't try to control it.

Not - given our earlier conversation - that I expect you to agree that more regulation is a good thing. Merely, that this is not just some nonsense done for the sake of the powerhungry.

As I have said, parents who are lax/lazy with these thing, and these things happen to them, they are the ones that should be charged with the dereliction of duty. Not make anyone and everyone else have to present a DigID to use social media.

That sort of thing can’t be stopped. It’s the world we live in now. If there’s a confrontation going on Then somebody will film it and distribute it.

Try to stop the confrontation, sure. But once it happens it’s too late.

The kid shouldn’t have had their phone in class and the old man, who (without knowing the facts) would appear to be a dickhead, shouldn’t have been there.

I suspect like many laws, there is some upside, and the power hungry are using that as an excuse to do this for their own means.

They don’t give a shit about kids and bullying, that’s just a happy coincidence.

Always back Self Interest - you know it’s trying.

Thats really the crux of it. 30 yrs ago Step 1 kid gets in trouble for being a brat Step 2 kid goes home tells Dad Step 3 Dad comes in next day. Common factor is feral Dad.

Why would you leave multiple schools to "escape" that video?! An argument with a dickhead? Big deal ffs

I'm fine with FB/Snap/IG etc being blocked though tbh, I'd actually cheer for it. Maybe people will actually be 'social' again

We live in the most self absorbed, me me me, vain, anxiety riddled period in history. **** it off and watch improvements immediately

Adults glued to their phones scrolling tiktok is embarrassing.

So waste time trying to control it. As you say "always way around (it)". Similar problem exists. Then what?

Here's the problem: by not even trying, you condemn it to happen more.

A) It's a shitty move by the LNP to support this. It's pointless and a waste of time.
B) Introduce the kids to email, envelopes and stamps, and encrypted messaging.
C) Give them a pushie and an Orchy bottle and tell them to go hang around in the park with their mates.

It shouldn't be up to the Govt to do it, though. If parents did their jobs we wouldn't need to talk about this.

Mate good luck banning any 15 year old from these platforms without making it a full time job.

I get what you saying, however, it'll feel like 20 kids being held back after school due to a couple of troublemakers because the teacher felt like being extra vindictive. Every one gets punished because of a few.

Also rather Orwellian. Want to go to YT? Drivers license plz. FB/Insta etc...? ID plz.

This is just to push a Digital ID, to access the net, on all of us. This has nothing to do with child safety, if it did, they would ban gambling ads and the like.
