Haidt now largely links depression to wokism not social media. He has further looked at the data and revealed the increase in depression among the youth is in progressive youth. Not those who are conservative. I.e. its not social media it's kids being taught an ideology that makes them depressed. Wokism tells kids that minor slights should trigger them and being triggered is the fault of other people and not the way you mentally process information. I.e. wokism tells kids the exact opposite thing that modern psychologists, stoics and buddhists have found to be extremely successful in improving mental health. Forget (don't worry about it), forgive or reinterpret in a positive light. No they haven't. That's the whole point behind this. Their brains aren't fully developed and they are nowhere near mature enough to handle it (I'm talking 11, 12, 13-year olds in particular). Jonathan Haidt has been calling attention to the rise of depression and anxiety in children and teenagers for years - since his article (and then book co-authored with Greg Lukianoff) The Coddling of the American Mind came out. That was around 2018. They were cautious about the effect of social media then; they aren't now as they have tons more data (They've also factored in Covid, basically the effect was underway already).
It all comes back to when Facebook/Twitter and iPhones became available - around 2008-2010. That generation then started attending universities around 2014. Which is exactly when the hysterical calls for deplatforming, safe spaces and so on escalated. Also factor in an entire generation that has been far more protected and insulated from things older generations considered normal - free play outside, no adults supervising etc. - and the effect is multiplied.
I'm far from convinced a government ruling is the way to solve it; it rarely is. But having seen it first hand with multiple friends and family members, I don't want kids under 15-16 anywhere near social media. It's bad for boys, but it is absolutely devastating for girls. Far more susceptible to gossip, missing out on social events, and teenage girls are every bit as nasty as teenage boys, but it's all reputational. Absolutely perfect to be exploited for social media.
I'm with you on the government not doing it; but if you let kids loose on social media, especially girls, you can almost predict more anxiety, more depression, worse attention, worse concentration, and everything else. Ultimately it comes down to parenting.

And if kids aren't mature enough to communicate with other kids as you suggest then surely we should ban them from going to schools and going outside to play with friends because in your mind they aren't mature enough to communicate with other kids.

I'd imagine that is one of the worst ones. Much worse than Reddit, forums like this, or YouTube.Isn't Snapchat one of the worst platforms for teens being exploited?
Agree but also how dumb do you need to be to get bullied in this setting. Take off the headphones, problem solved.Gaming platforms are probably worse - dominated by teenage boys with anonymous accounts encouraged to trashtalk. What could go wrong?
Do you remember what it was like being 13?Agree but also how dumb do you need to be to get bullied in this setting. Take off the headphones, problem solved.
I'm sure you can block other users too but you can very easily play the game online without being bullied. Of all the valid complaints about online bullying & SM, this one I struggle to comprehend tbh
Yeah, there wasn't any bullying online (MSN Messenger but again, just leave the chat) but the equivalent would have been someone ringing the house phone to abuse you, just hang up.Do you remember what it was like being 13?
And if all your mates are on there wondering why you're not joining in the chat? And it's not just headphones, it's text based.Yeah, there wasn't any bullying online (MSN Messenger but again, just leave the chat) but the equivalent would have been someone ringing the house phone to abuse you, just hang up.
Gaming harassment, whilst not good, is very easily avoided. Take your headphones off, you can still play the game
Kids being sexually exploited by adults - fine.Isn't Snapchat one of the worst platforms for teens being exploited?
Are they mates or are they online with bullies? And if all your mates are on there wondering why you're not joining in the chat? And it's not just headphones, it's text based.
Congrats on being strong enough to avoid the bullying when you were young but that's not who this legislation is aimed at.
Are they mates or are they online with bullies?
Plenty of groups keep a member that they can belittle around for just that. The victim stays because they're desperate for attention. Are they mates or are they online with bullies?
Falling apart already:
Rowland says Snapchat could be excluded from social media regulations
The communications minister has continued doing the media rounds this morning, speaking on 2GB about the government’s move to regulate social media companies.
She said that part of the plan was to encourage “low-risk services” like YouTube Kids.
Rowland also said Snapchat could also be excluded, and that some platforms “present themselves in different way”:
More than this, Murdoch and the LNP now have a target. Every time somebody complains about kids on Social Media: Blame the ALP for not implementing the bipartisan legislation to ban it.Poisoned chalice. Can't be done at any meaningful level. I am bewildered at Albo and the ALP for this, Dutton & co can walk away from it, non core promises and all that but the ALP have just found themselves in a massive pile of shit
1) implements a geographic based proxy/filter for services that aren't clearly defined = won't happen.
2) Shift the restrictions to the service providers both network and application = won't happen
3) Implement new digital ID or link to mygov at app layer for access to services that have never had restrictions (and again not clearly defined) = good luck......
I still don't know how they found themselves in this situation. ****ing mind boggling. Doubt Ed Husic is on board.
I'm guessing this happened because the Murdoch/Sky morons got into somebody like Rowland's ear and said "Look, I know we've been tough on you, but if you pass this social bill, we'll make sure Dutton makes it bi-partisan and we'll say good things about you and the ban"
They walk into this tur-d-burger and Murdoch and Sky will lay the boots in, along with the LNP, all the way through the election cycle.
So Stupid. So, so stupid.
I thought they were just scared, but I'm now thinking it might be the stupid driving them more than the fear.
The irony part is that anonymous forums wont count as part as the social media ban. Cos they arent social media.Gaming platforms are probably worse - dominated by teenage boys with anonymous accounts encouraged to trashtalk. What could go wrong?
