Tambling.

Battler who lacks pace. Gets off very lightly in reviews of early picks.
Exactly what anyone would say of Rance before this year.

No, not quick, but his last 10 games, since he's got rid of bad hammies & groins, have been pretty good.
Barries last year against Freo & Sydney, good games every other week since; ranging from 29 & 30-touch midfield games to sure efforts off a flank to solid CHB/3rd tall.
Myers is playing better footy than all of the guys who went around that pick - Morton, Masten, Grant, Palmer, Henderson.

What makes Myers a battler?
Isn't slow...
Myers has had a lot of injuries which have stalled his development and hurt his fitness.
He's quick enough in a straight line, he's pretty stiff though, not good at bending down or turning. Possibly soft-tissue related because he's looking a lot less like that, now.

You'd rather have the ball in the hands of a Myers than Grigg.
He's a gigantic kick, can do special things with a 55-60m spot, but not so great at the shorter stuff & not much of a right foot.

The one allowance I'll make is for his size, he does actually give the impression of being a late bloomer.
Given he was pretty average early and pretty good now, your "impression" is pretty much correct. Nonetheless, keep ignoring that & all form and bleating on with the 'dud' bit...

As a sport we are far too quick to judge & so slow to revise those decisions. 15 average games spread across his first 2 injury-destroyed seasons are apparently hard to erase but in the scheme of things, do not matter at all.

I dare say if Tambling was picked up with a 30+ pick, he'd be considered a good AFL player, but the expectations (and publicity) of being pick-4 means he's considered a disappointment.
Agreed. Needed a clean start.

We were under no illusions about Miller's ability. Cost peanuts (rookie draft) and without starring, has done the job asked of him - something that Tambling was unable to do in 2010, hence he was moved on.

Tambling played his role in 2010, even under the weight of a terrible run of injuries. He was in the side to provide defensive pressure and a hard attack on the ball, and he certainly provided it.

Here is what we gave up.

8. Richard Tambling from Richmond to Adelaide for Nathan Bock compensation pick (end R1) and pick 50 (R3)
Adelaide could've shelved the compensation pick, and used #50 to pick up someone like Hibberd, Duigan or Puopolo. All of which would do a similar, if not better job (stats suggest similar) for a smaller price.

I just can't fathom how he was traded for 2 picks. Perhap's it was the need for another foot soldier, but that still points back to trading 1 pick, or looking to the SANFL, VFL and WAFL leagues for a periphery player.

Don't worry, I said it. Rance was monumentally average in all departments except courage. But at pick #18/194cm he gets a longer grace period.

Getting more ball as you'd expect when he's spending time around the middle, but he lacks polish IMO where the pre-draft assessments touted him as highly skilled.

I agree and am not normally in the business of potting players. My initial reason for posting about him was that, even allowing for injury, he has gotten off lightly (compared to e.g. Tambling) as a #6 pick in his fourth year.

Lots of murmurings about injuries yet he played week after week. That a fringe player in White inherited his role suggests that he didn't do it satisfactorily.

Are these Richmond supporters who are calling Tambling a dud because they've experienced him for 6 years the same ones who defend Brad Miller and laugh at Melbourne for letting go of a 'good, experienced player'?

Get with the program dude , seriously if this thread is going too fast

Please read slowly

If you look at his form closely, he's been a good contributor in (my count) 9 of his last 12 matches he's been right to play in. Despite being shoved all around the park and despite being in a balls side at the end of last year. And still, plenty of people wanted to delist or trade him at the end of last year - even after being one of our best over the last 2 weeks. If that's 'getting off lightly', then I'd hate to see what you call vitriol!

Believe you me, on bombers forums, he has to win about 9 brownlows to redeem himself in many people's eyes.

In the real world, he's taken a year longer than you'd want but he's coming along nicely.

Fair enough, the only comments I've heard in the media about his progress have been in relation to his injuries.

Richmond took him at 4 because he was great at the carnival ( in div-2 ) and Buddy had some question marks, mostly regarding his attitude, so while he was always considered to have enormous potential, he was considered too big a risk.

Of course, that our entire recruiting staff leadng upto that draft was Francis Jackson, who had to do his day job (teaching) first, and that included coaching a junior team on weekends meant that neither of these players got nearly enough attention to make a reasonable judgement.
You were spot on until you mentioned Francis Jackson. Our recruiter then was Greg Beck who was recruiting for us knowing that his services the following year were no longer required. Francis joined us part time in 2005 and didn't become full time until 2006.

Xavier Ellis is the one I think that isn't discussed.

Taken pick 3 behind Murphy and Thomas and before Boak and a few other gun players.

Guy doesn't do alot...is borderline best 22

Boak was the following year but you're right amcre, aside from a ripping Grand Final in 2008, Ellis hasn't done much at all. He seems like the kind of guy who played key position in juniors but was too small to do so in the AFL, so is relegated to the flanks/midfield, where he doesn't look comfortable at all. That's my guess. People need to keep in mind also that he didn't play at all in his first season because he was still doing year 12. So he actually hasn't been around at the top level as long as it seems.

He was pretty good in the second half of 2008, helped win a flag on the day with his 27 odd disposals. If he never plays another game, he's still done his job.

and what if you use that pick to pick up a dud?

a first round pick doesnt mean a good player. what if you pick up another tambling?

I'll back our recruiters in, they seem to be doing a fine job at the moment. :)

Adelaide would have had 6 years to watch Tambling and see all of his short comings, at least when drafting a kid it can go either way and Adelaide already knew what they were getting yet paid way over the odds for him.

Anyway the pick might come in handy when dealing with GWS. :)

draft picks cant be called over the odds because you havent used them. if we had given up kurt tippett and scott thompson that would be over the odds, but as you havent used the pick, it's not overs.

A pick that will be in the top20 come draft time is over the odds for a player of Tambling's ilk.

Jack Darling was taken at pick 27 in a compromised draft, I cant wait until the draft returns to normal and we can nab ourselves a star.

it doesnt matter, richmond could still pick up a spud, no matter how high.

jarrhan jacky was taken second round. if you pick up a jacky, tambling + 3rd rounder is a steal.

Sure, the pick is speculative, but that still doesn't change the fact Tambling has shown nothing in 6 years and has only ever had a good half season.

Top20 pick for Tambling = overs in anyone's language.

Steady on. Whilst I agree Tambling is a spud for how early we picked him, he did show some good signs playing off half back.
To say he showed nothing is untrue.

Which was in the last half of the 08(9?) season I believe.

But the bottom line is, despite the physical attributes that saw him drafted so high, he is a poor kick of the football. Good luck with that, but I (along with every other Tiger supporter) can tell you that you're in for a world of excruciating, bitter sweet pain. We've seen the light (thanks Dimma), you'll be born again soon enough.
