Discussion Tasmania AFL Jumper Design

I find this interesting... I feel like they may have changed the intended jumper.

I was shown the jumper design pre-launch (through work) and it was different.

It was the same state jumper design, but the green background was different.

It wasn't plain green. It had a pattern.

Fast forward to the launch, and the jumper is the plain state jumper... but that green pattern that I saw as the background is being used elsewhere in all their graphics. And it's very much a fabric look:

Was the jumper changed from this slightly different design back to the plain state jumper, but they've kept the pattern elsewhere?

Cool insight. It is a foundation jumper. I think it is purely an idea of what they will wear in 2028.

The logo looks similar to the Adelaide, Hawks, North, Bulldogs etc logos.

It's all generic American style cartoon rubbish that looks like it was drawn by 6 year olds.
You complain about Adelaide/Hawthorn etc. logos being simple and 'cartoony' and try to lump it in with this new Tasmania logo which is the complete polar opposite of that - complex and indistinct.

If a logo can be drawn by a 6-year-old then I'd argue it's a great logo. If it's distinct and impressionable enough for a child who lacks full motor capabilities to draw then that's an incredible work of branding.

Point to me a logo from over the years that isn't 'cartoony' besides maybe the Carlton monogram and you'll probably notice logos have actually gotten less cartoony over the years and more professional/serious compared to that of the VFL emblems of the 80s.

Anyway I'm not really trying to have a go at your personally but I just see so many people who love to complain about logos being too cartoony or 'American' yet wouldn't have the slightest clue of what they want in a logo.

Why is it even bad for logos to look American anyway? NBA and NFL has some of the most iconic, timeless and recognisable logos of all time - Lakers, Raiders, Celtics, Packers, Yankees and the list goes on. American logos should be the golden standard of logo design.

And here it is again, the background of the header image on the membership homepage. That's the jumper i was shown

Whilst I do really like that pattern, I think it would be a bit much on a footy jumper. For the most part we like to keep it traditional. I feel like that pattern would work well as a watermark on the green but otherwise it's too busy

Collingwood's is a great example on how to do it right. When you guys updated it you gave it a little tweak but it is so good there was no never to completely overhaul it.

I should clarify that re the American logos I am talking more about the animal ones.

To me the logos I mentioned just look and feel so samey and they aren't my cup of tea.

I don’t think this will be their actual AFL guernsey just the ‘foundation jumper’ for their early pre-AFL years and honestly, that makes a tonne of sense, if they unveiled their actual jumpers today, those jumpers would be 3-4 years old by their first AFL match.

It was that green design, with the T and map as per the state jumper. So largely the state jumper, but different background.
That pattern would make a great base for the jumper, still not sure about the state design but that pattern is a much better starting point.

I think one of the pitfalls of the logo is that it doesn't have a distinguishable shape.
They kind of missed an opportunity to stylise the logo/fur in to the shape of Tasmania. Seems like a missed opportunity as opposed to the janky shapes they rolled out.

I like how they have done something different. Am a little sick of the "plain" "corporate" look a lot for logo's are going with at the moment. Good on them for doing something a bit more out there. Everyone laughed at the Jackies launch and now they are loved. Same thing here.

I think having the pattern would definitely help to modernise and add a point of difference to the state jumper.

Did you see any other designs or was that the only one?

Well they even say something similar, but the Map is (probably) staying in some capacity...

Fair to say the foundation jumper has copped some criticism, and I'd be in agreeance if they roll it out in round 1 2028. But as others have mentioned, there's a pretty good chance it'll go through plenty more change before then... plenty of time for us all to have a crack at our own versions, this time with the new logo and confirmed colours as parameters.

Don't forget, while in different circumstances, this is what GWS rolled out way back at the begining:

It's a bit different though isn't it. That jumper had no historical relevance, all the old geezers will get upset if they scrap the state jumper for round 1, 2028. What's worrying is they actually listened to these clowns like Robert Shaw.

Hey Guys, Thought I would throw a few ideas together for a Tassie Team now it's looking much more likely to happen! Personally I think they have to use Green as there main identity, its already associated with the state and is unique in the league so have tried a more traditional concept and an all green version as well which would really set them apart from the other teams

That is excellent someone needs to send some of these into AFL HQ.
But like the Suns once again the AFL had their work experience 4 yo design it.

Courtesy of IP Aus, strange to not unveil these alongside the other stuff:

This has also been submitted for trademark in amongst all the new Tassie entries:

What is it? Anybody's guess, but I supposed it could be for a jumper design. Something like:

Well, I guess it's a version of the Map of Tassie I suppose!
