Good to see that they're recognising that the whole "health and housing over stadium" rhetoric is against the party's values.

Bec tried to play both sides of the argument thinking sitting in the middle would give them the best chance of retaining and gaining votes.

This ill thought-out strategy ended up alienating both sides.

At the very least it cost them a seat in Franklin, as O'Byrne was elected by traditional Labor voters who had been pushed away by the lack of support for the stadium/team.

You could also make an argument that they could have stolen a seat from the Libs in both Clark and Lyons with support for the stadium.

I doubt it would have affected them negatively in the northern seats as the Libs were well ahead and they already support the stadium.

I think what we'll see (especially if Winter gets the leadership) is Labor pushing hard for either Mac Point 2.0 or an alternative stadium somewhere like Elwick Racecourse.

They will attack the government hard on the cost and management of the Mac Point build, but still vote it through in Parliament, as they won't want to be responsible for killing the team.

[edit] wilkie has questions to answer here .... his attack (made under parliamentary privilege) was a gutless and shameful misrepresentation of a player welfare program that has been around for 20+ years ........ and its based on a story fed to him by a player who is subject to a 4-year ban for illicit drug use ...... supported by the father of said ex-player who is pursuing an un-related compensatory claim against the afl for health reasons

Economic impact stats regarding sports and stadiums are always a bit rubbery, but anyone with a bit of common sense would clearly see that there will be an increase of travelling tourists, in winter (when less tourists go in general), because of AFL support, in a way that a soccer stadium can't. That brings money from outside Tasmania into it. In a way that a soccer stadium won't, because there is nothing that can be played on a soccer field in Hobart that will consistently get tens of thousands of tourists each year every year like away AFL supporters will.

Surely it's the job of a politician, irrespective of their personal beliefs and interests, and ideology, to understand that?

All they needed to say really was thay they supported the Team, and given the current government put them in a position where they have to honor a contract - that they intended to hold stadium expenditure to great scrutiny and to as low a cost to the taxpayer as possible.
