boy you ARE informed, arn't you blurton???

Listen geek, you've got them and you're stuck with them. Nothing left for you to to do but defend your stupidity. There's always surgery but the scars are often worse than the stupid tatt.

My Dad wasn't smothered with tatts, but he did have quite a few, anyway, that's neither here nor there.

What disturbs me about tatts is the very point you make, "if it's something you believe in strongly enough". All of us at some stage strongly believe in an issue, or a cause, or an event, or whatever, that is fine, BUT what happens when you change your mind?

Trust me, as we grow older opinions change, prioritys change, hell even some issues disappear. That is a given, not speculation, so how do you put up with a very permanent tattoo?

A tatt that may even cause public disdain 20 years from now, a tatt that may horrify a prospective future girlfriend/wife.

Any one of a million things could happen which will make you despise your tatt, but what do you do, tatts are permanent.

Sure, this is all guess work, it may not happen this way for you, but I'm betting it will happen this way for plenty of tatt branded people.

As for "body art", sure that's cool, why not do what they did in the 60's, use paint that will wash off, you've made a fashion statement, you get rid of it, and the following week you can make a different fashion statement.

Like I said, tatts make no sense to me

A tattoo that horrifies futre gf/wife? public disdain??

i dont care what other people think about it..the reason i got my tattoo was because it means something to me.

I dont display my tattoo...i have no need to. It is for my enjoyment, not to show people how "cool" i think i am.

If you dont understand them, thats fine, i dont expect you to have one, but dont be moronic like blurton, and start spraying vitriol all over the place about them.

Sure, I have seen many tatts which are quite frankly repugnant, for example swastikas (yes I know it has several meanings, but practically all associate it with Nazi Germany), effigies of Hitler etc., slogans applauding the Holocaust, slogans applauding the sneak attack on Pearl Harbour, disparaging tatts about Homosexuals, race, disabilities, etc. There are millions of issues which a person may be proud of their current stance, but in the future may cause revulsion.

I dont care what other people think about it..the reason i got my tattoo was because it means something to me.

That's fine, but again, what if your attitude changes?

I dont display my tattoo...i have no need to. It is for my enjoyment, not to show people how "cool" i think i am.

Again that's fine, I sincerely hope you're still proud of it when you're 50 years old, a company executive, attending a business function at the poolside, and all of your colleagues plus superiors are gawking at your tatt.

If you dont understand them, thats fine, i dont expect you to have one, but dont be moronic like blurton, and start spraying vitriol all over the place about them.

Have I shown that type of behaviour?

I feel that I have been debating the issue in a constructive civilized manner.

Hey junior, go bck to school and learn what straight edge really stands for. Yes, it involves no drinking, smoking or drugs, but it also means living a certain way.....something the new breed of straight edger appears to know nothing of.

ps. most straight edgers fall to the vices sooner than later. Enjoy it while you can.

Oh, and I have a couple of tattoos. I actually have an arm band that I got in 1994 and it's interesting to hear that you experts consider them passe. That may be the case, but I'm still very happy with mine and I'd still rather have that than a dragon, eagle, team logo, band name.......or some such crud. And for those who say "I'd rather have none' well that's fine, but it sounds like you're trying to inflict your belief systems on others.

I like tattoos. I've tossed up the idea of getting one myself, but asides from the fact that I can rarely afford it, I'd never be able to quite make up my mind exactly where and what I want.

OK, saying people with tatts are losers is totally unjustfied and an unnecessary flame. I've got an idea why people get them, I just know I wouldn't in case I later realised I hated the tatt and then I'm stuck with it. Anyway that's my opinion. I'm not trying to push my belief system on to anyone, just giving an alternative view. If you love your tatts, good for you. Keep enjoying your "body art" ;)

I had a mate that was a tattooist. He may still have the place in Bridge rd (have no idea of the number, look it up in the phone book, ask for Dieter).

He is literally done from neck to toe in tatts. He also didnt start getting them until mid-twenties when he was very sure that he was certain of what he was doing to his body and he was comfortable with it.

He's also told me stories of customers coming back with complaints of changing their minds and can you remove (the tatt) it, change the design/colour/size etc.

In other words as Asgardian said, be very very certain of what your getting.

If your comfortable with it, fine. I have no plans on ever getting tattooed but have no real problems with people that do. It is your choice after all but ... laser surgery removal is costly (again, another friend has payed thousands to remove a tatt she got at 18. She loved it then and swore she always would, at 25 somehow 'always would' had stopped) and does leave scarring.

Fashion is transient so dont ever get a tatt for that reason alone. My own view is that is what way to many do nowdays.. but hey.. its only my view on it.

Cheers.

These guys are great, they do custom work, not off the shelf crap, and encourage you to take in your own designs.

Anyone deciding to get a tattoo, for **** sake get something original.
Barbed wire, Chinese, Maori & Celtic symbols are the most passe' & pointless things to get permanently etched into your skin. You may as well get a barcode.

Mate of mine in Adelaide had his sons name tattooed on his back in barcode. I thought that was pretty original.

I would never get a fashion tattoo, something common like a butterfly, rose, barbed wire etc. I got a Tatt of my team, that is something I will always love & never be sorry I got, I wouldn't get a Tatt of an American Indian, or Chinese symbols, because they are just fads, once the fad changes you are stuck with it.

I know what you mean, Mantis. If I got a tatto if would be something to do with Port Adelaide. However, I'll never actaully get one.....too painful! :p

I came close to getting Sturt tatt in 1998 however it missed out on happening by 9 points.

I'm exactly the same. And until I'm absolutely sure of what I want, and where, and that hasn't changed for a while....... then I'll think of actually getting it done. :D

As far as my views on tattoos go, even though I am probably too chicken to EVER get one done :p I respect other people's individuality and right to have whatever the hell they want tattooed on their skin. :)

hmm i dunno why ppl dont like the armbands either i think they are just a kewl decoration i mean u wear jewellery and anklets so this one is more permanent and u dont have to worry about losing it or that it would rub off

chinese characters and ****e like that i do reckon r dumb unless u actually are chinese otherwise wots the point of getting it. Like those stupid ppl who try to be kewl by doing that feng sui thing.

I know as soon as I settle on what I want, I'll see something else I want more ... and I really only want one tattoo at the most.

I'd known for years what sort of tattoo I wanted when I got mine...

when I was a little girl, I had a rose named after me, so roses have had that special meaning... and purple is my fav colour... so it's a (surprise!!) purple rose!!!

it's quite small, and on the inside of my ankle... in fact, it's so out of the way that a number of my friends still don't know I've got it!

it's not there to show off to other people, it's just for me, and I haven't regretted getting it once.

as others have suggested, if you're at all uncertain of the design you want to get, wait.... it should be a design that feels totally right, not one you're settling for

Unfortunately the guy who did mine was (we found out afterwards!) watering his inks down, so mine faded after about three months... I had to go to second place and get it done again (OUCH!!!! pain!!!!) but no problems with it after that.

The second guy was in Sale - his name is Peter Backman - I think he's in Traralgon now, so a bit of a hike, but worth it!

There is really only one place to go in Melbourne for a tattoo and that is Splash of Colour in Union Road, Ascot Vale.

Highyl regarded in the industry for their artowrk and greatly respected for their business practices that ensure customer satisfaction and healthy practices, I doubt if you'll find a better place to go.

And Aspirilla, being a North Melbourne supporter you may be swayed by the fact that the Roos' players were all tattooed in that shop with premiership mementoes. For that matter, so were the Essendon lads.

Sam Newman once did a street talk from the shop, but don't let that put you off, as it is THE place to be tattooed in Melbourne...and the fact it is run by my brother-in-law has not influenced my my opinion whatsoever...honest. ;)

Seriously though, tell Jim that Deano sent ya and you'll be taken care of. Even if he does support Collingwood, he is still a top bloke and he'll ensure you leave the shop thrilled with his work.

Thanks mate, appreciate the heads up. Sounds like they'll do a great job.
