Taylor Swift

For anyone interested I'll be sharing my thoughts and reviews on Taylor's albums as I listen to them (aiming for one a week). Would very much welcome thoughts/opinions and so on. :)

Starting off with her debut album:

Taylor Swift (2006)

Kicking things off we have Taylor’s self-titled debut album from 2006. Upon listening to it I started to think it sounded somewhat familiar, after going over it in my head I’d remembered that I’d listened to this all the way back in 2009 but I can barely remember any of it outside of Teardrops On My Guitar, Our Song, Picture To Burn. I’m guessing I must’ve checked it out after really like Love Story when that was first released. The album mustn’t have left much of an impression on me back then as I couldn’t recall anything else at all.

Going into this I was aware of Taylor’s country beginnings so it was no surprise to me that this was very different to what she releases now. It has however got me very interested and excited to see the music evolution and journey Taylor takes of the course of her 10 studio albums.

Of the album itself I found it to be quite pleasant without being anything to special. I’ve enjoyed country music over the years with Shania Twain, Carrie Underwood and Faith Hill being amongst some of the regulars I go to for my bit of country music fix. I think it’s clear though from the offset that Taylor has a real gift at songwriting with Teardrops On My Guitar and Picture To Burn being my favourite two songs from the album. Aside from the singles though and Stay Beautiful which was my favourite album track I didn’t find much else that had me itching to go back to it. Saying that though there wasn’t anything on here that I thoroughly disliked, just a lot that completely came and went. On the whole though this was a very decent debut and one that I am sure set a strong foundation for what is to come.

Singles I liked: Teardrops On My Guitar, Our Song, Picture To Burn, Should’ve Said No
Album Tracks I liked: Stay Beautiful

“96,000 people the first night, 96,000 people the second night, 96,000 people tonight,” Swift said in a video shared by a fan on the social media site X. “Those are all the biggest shows I’ve ever played on a tour and you did it three times.”

She continued, adding, “The math is that it’s 288,000 people in three nights. Melbourne, you are the love of my life.”

Melbum rulz!!

Google claims the Sydney stadium holds 83,500 - whether that stays the same or adjusts up/down with the concert configuration??

Shame that they'll have a higher total based on they're having 4 shows while Melbourne only got 3.
Depends on floor seats and how many seats empty behind stage

Someone posted this elsewhere but a self-professed non-Swiftie (40 yr old male) said they were a convert after the MCG concert because it was seeing more than 100k people just being joyous and happy and sharing a collective positive vibe. Fans lined up patiently, shared friendship bracelets with strangers, went all out with the costumes and just generally lapped it up. In a sports match, some fans have to lose, but no one loses here and every demographic was catered for with Taylor's evolution from album to album. I think it was the most spot on call I have read as to why this is a defining tour for her and the legion of devoted fans.

Back to Perth now on a ludicrously overpriced flight - but worth every penny.

This is what I keep telling people - it was a totally immersive sisterhood experience. Never felt anything like it.

Went to perth in 2018 for a funeral on overpriced ticket

Aside from bigfooty bragging rights, sydney will have a greater number of attendees so it is what it is.

Cannot wait for the concert movie to come to Disney+. My girlfriends and I are organising a cocktail night and we're going to get lit and dance to Taylor for hours.

Excellent!!!
Gues what the northys did last night? :D

Well said. Well said. In footy there's general good naturedness, but every season there will be antisocial behaviour due to various factors. Largely met with a shrug of shoulder by the afl and hardcore fans.

What we saw on the weekend was a coming together of people from across the land. No one cared about your political stance, ethnic heritage, residence location, football code followed. Smiles and more smiles from everyone. You could wear anything you want and no one cared.

It’s just really boring criticism to say she’s not a strong singer or song writer. She writes her own songs, plays piano, plays guitar, is an incredible story teller, has unbelievable stage presence and is breaking records left and right.

If you think all she churns out is bubblegum pop (and what’s so terrible about bubblegum pop?) then listen to folklore, All Too Well (10 minute version), Tolerate It, Cardigan, You’re Losing Me, exile or any of her other non-single releases. She has a unique way of capturing the female experience in particular that a lot of men (#notallmen) dismiss derisively and only do themselves a disservice as a result.

She and her team have influenced the music industry in massive ways. She is a strong woman who is breaking down barriers and I think a lot of people find that scary.

“I’m so sick of running as fast as I can
Wondering if I’d get there quicker
If I was a man”
absolutely brilliant post mrsEddieBetts, and coming from a guy, we unfortunately live in a mans world whether you agree or disagree, so can I just say, you nailed it!
Happy Jimmy Fallon GIF by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

It was the second best concert I've been to as a whole after Springsteen (who is my Taylor to many of you).

The fact the entire stadium was a collective was something absolutely magical and is something that will unlikely be matched.

At gigs like Springsteen Born To Run gets everyone up and singing in unison, Billy Joel with Piano Man etc, but the whole stadium was up and shouting every word of every song, that won't be something I'll ever see again I think.

Also I gave Red a listen today after a long time between drinks. Starlight is an absolute cracker, as is Holy Ground.
