Now, hopefully you lot who have suddenly found a love for cycling hang in there and get into some other events. there's a decent one day race this weekend at san sebastian. and the vuelta is only a month away. Arguably one of the most brutal climbs is on the itinerary this year - Angliru in the Asturias. above 20% in a certain section. makes lo zoncolan and anything they do in the TDF like a descent. filthy im going to miss it as i'll be OS.

Sierra Nevada on Stage 4, Angliru on 15. Mouth watering. Plus its the first time in 33 years the Vuelta will venture through Basque country. Last time they were there, riders were met with flaming tyres and blockades on the road.

Now that would make for great TV.:D

Can't wait for the Vuelta though, should be awesome, hopefully SBS show a few stages, although Eurosport is likely to show it all on Fox anyway.:)

Evans deserves all the credit and media exposure and everything else that comes out of this

Should there be more focus on kids starving in Africa, people who saves lives, should they get paid more? Yep, absolutely.

Should someone like Mia F be pushing for that after spending years on magazines that pitch at the upper crust spending money on themselves and promote expensive clothes etc that have been made in third world sweatshops? What an absolute hipocrit, if anything it looks like Mia F is downgrading the plight of Africans etc just to get exposure for herself

And if she knew more about Evans she'd know he's pushed for issues like freedom for Tibet etc, something she's never done

There's been suggestions that the new bridge at Barwon Heads be named after Cadel. IIRC that bridge was subject to a lot of hate from the locals before it was built. Perhaps it is apt ;)

Congratulations to Cadel - the last few stages were awesome :) :thumbsu:

and yes, I got a bit teary and am proud of his achievment . But I've been watching cycling for many years, seen how close he has been, and how hard he has worked. He looked different this tour...

The ignorance was the worst thing about it.

At the end, her whole argument petered out and she was left with "he doesn't even live in Australia. He lives in Switzerland". Karl was very nice when he politely suggested she read his biography.

The guy was born with a broken nose, spent two weeks in a coma, told he would never walk again, after being kicked in the head by a horse and has broken almost every bone in his body in one of the toughest, most dangerous, most gruelling sports known to man. It was only recently in the Giro d'Italia that a rider died ffs.

But her argument was based on he doesn't save lives and he lives in Switzerland . I'll happily honour a doctor for saving lives when over half a million people watch him operate at 2am in the morning.

I think Mia made pretty much embarrassed herself with that performance this morning.

Clearly has no understanding of a) the sport and b) the person.

16 Total Ppl Network SBS ONE TOUR DE FRANCE 2011 LIVE: STAGE 21 704,000 153,000 291,000 65,000 66,000 129,000

700k people watched last night

I don't not know how I am still functioning.

c) Australian's.

d) all of the above.

She is just an ignorant woman who had no idea of the topic she was discussing which made here sound like a complete an utter dill... which is quite apt really.

and those tv numbers. are they peak or average? sensational if they held on til the finish and presentation.

Giro & Vuelta are definately upping the ante. Theyve been slow to internationalise the event, and are now continually devising harder routes to generate the excitement in the race. Great for fans. Dunno if it's ideal in attracting the elite TDF talent long term, but Anton, Rodriguez and co. will still light it up this year.

those points in red are all sections of ramps above 20%. it's just inhumane.

woohahahaha :thumbsu:

Angliru in 2008. fantastic atmosphere. check out how steep it is. pro cyclists can barely move.

The motor bike burning up was pretty funny this year, you have to agree. :D

That's just wrong, lol.

What is the steepest climb that is ridden competitively?

Those TV ratings would be an average figure, for the 5 major capital cities, across the duration of the 4hr broadcast.

The real figure is probably about 30-50% higher, by the time regional viewers are taken into account.

700,000 for a 4hr broadcast, which didn't finish until after 2am, is a truly amazing result - doubly so for SBS.

And doubly so considering it is a largely ceremonial stage and the starting flag wasn't waved for close to an hour.

I know I went to bed not long after Evans brought out the champagne because I just couldn't last any longer.

If Evans sets himself to defend Le Tour in 2012 the race will be massive in Australia. No question that the race has just grown and grown since 2007. I only used to watch the 6PM highlights show with dad when Armstrong was doing his thing, now I'll watch most stages live, sometimes even manage to get my girlfriend to watch til midnight.

Just on Armstrong. Was watching him attack on Alpe d'Huez on Youtube. No one was wearing helmets. Is it a directive by the race referee that everyone has to wear helmets now?

I think unrealistic expectations will be a worry. Even from a neutral perspective it was an exceptionally exciting race this year, and Evans has little chance of defending next time around.

I have a feeling that next year will result in a lot of disappointment for new cycling fans.

UCI changed the rules a few years ago. It used to be that helmets could be removed for the final climb IF it was an uphill finish AND the climb lasted for at least (I think) 5km.

I remember Axel Merckx and a couple of other riders getting thrown out of the Paris-Nice for forgetting about the change.
