I watched the Aust v Ireland game on Saturday and IMO the Dome is the best ground for watching international rugby in Australia. The singing with the roof closed is great. Viewing is good from most seats.

I'm a fan of the place, been there for all sorts of gear, footy, concerts - it copped more flak because of the backlash at losing Waverley than any actual problems with the ground.

It gets a massive amount of corporate gigs and and concerts and the like during the year as well - a mate of mine was working for RMIT a few years ago and they used to hold their graduation ceremonies down on the surface.

Personally I think the AFL made a wise investment in the place.

It also copped flak for the getting in/ticket fiasco since it opened...however, I have never had a problem getting in. I live in Sydney and have been there 5 times, once was a Carlton game and I sat in the Carlton members, this year for Ess v WB Rd21 I bought my tickets from TickMstr at Myer, but the other 3 I bought from the TM website with the cred card and had to get my tickets when I turned up.

Never a single problem ever.1 of the games I went to in 2000 had 46,000 in there and I walked straight in.

If you do some planning, you'll be fine.

im sorry but its not the best place.

No cricket ground (AFL field) ever will be. Why? because most people are way to far from the action. Though it is better than most it still doesnt get close to the specialised rectangular pitches.

What about the ones behind the in-goal areas at ground level. I've watched soccer at the MCG and it totally sucks.

You obviously ain't been to Suncorp Stadium yet. I think both Qld ground are the best arenas in Aussie sport. The Bananbenders are indeed lucky puppies!

No, haven't been lucky enough to watch a game at Suncorp, only heard good things though.

Any seat behind the goals at ground level at any stadium will suck, its not possible to make them good.

IMO the Dome is better to watch rugby than Aussie Stadium even though it is an oval rather than a rectangle.

I've never attended a Rugby Union International (or any Union games for that matter) but I have been to numerous NRL and State of Origin matches, some of those NRL games being played on an oval-shaped field.

In my opinion, I must say that the oval ground is kinda 'crap' in any game of Rugby League - and as Rugby Union is played on exactly the same field (with the exception of the bloody 20 odd metre deep in-goal areas ;) ) id assume it'd be the same.

The first obvious reason for this is that League and Union are regtangular field games. The Telstra Dome in Melbourne accomadates Australian Rules and Cricket, hence the oval feild. Oval feilds dont matter in Aussie Rules as the sidelines or boundary is just metres from the the fence. In League or Union, its a mile away. Yes, the crowd atmosphere might be great, yes the facilities might be magnificent, but imagine if the Dome was rectangular? I bet itd be even better to view rectangular field sports.

Which leads me to my opinion that Lang Park (Suncorp Stadium) is better, if not the best, ground to view Rugby League, and in this case Rugby Union. The sidelines are closer to the fence than most, if not all, other grounds played on by the Wallabies or NRL teams. The facilites are also magnificent (see www.suncorpstadium.com).

Im sure very few, if not none of you, were there to witness State of Origin 1 in League earlier this year. I can tell you that the 'couldran' as it is known went off. If by some chance they get a close quater final up there in the Rugby Union im sure that place will come alive big time.

Thats all in my opinion.

Cheers,

Hicham.

I agree the Telstra Dome was built for Australian Football and for concerts thats why sports that use a rectangle are not really suitable at this facility the same applies to the MCG and SCG.

I've been to both and AS is WAY better. It's built for RL. The Dome aint.

Some say Parramatta Stadium is one of the best. Its close to the action.

I've been to both several times and can't agree. You get wet in almost every seat in AS. Facilities are terrible can't get food or drinks. Transport is non existent.

aussie stadium was also built in 1988 :)

so there facilities of course will be much better at Telstra dome.

But Viewing wise you couldnt get much better than Aussie stadium

Telstra Dome can be configured for RU/RL/Soccer by bringing the side seating forward on rollers but for some unknown reason the IRU didnt use this option for thr RWC matches in melbourne.

Its rarely used because it cuts capacity by 6000 and that 6000 less tickets they could of sold and thus less money to the IRU at the end of the day. Simple really

telstra dome is the premier (rectangular) football stadium in melbourne when configured that way - but if they werent going to configure the stadium for the RUWC, then telstra dome was really no better or worse than the MCG was it??
they should have looked at staging the quarter finals @ MCG and charged far far less than the $295 charged at the dome - perhaps 100-150 would have pushed capacity @ MCG?

You still feel much closer to the field at Docklands than at the MCG. Especially when you get to the higher levels.

But selfish and stupid = no consideration to the fans comfort.

Well I've been to the Dome, Suncorp Stadium, and the SFS, and the best one is Suncorp Stadium.

In the world cup Suncorp Stadium had the best atmosphere and view. At the Dome, the atmosphere was relaxed, and the view was good but still too far away.

You get wet? Take a raincoat. Food? Drink? Who cares? I eat before I go. Less expensive. I couldn't care less if there were NO food outlets at footy grounds. I go to watch football. Transport? Drive.

Sheesh! Some people.

I've seen RL games at Telstra and at Olympic Park and I'll take OP ANYDAY. So glad the Storm moved back.
