I hope I might be forgiven for a small dose of self indulgence. Today represents 10 years since I joined Big Footy. It seems such a long time.
It has been a wonderful journey. It has been a journey that has had many highs but some lows.
I have read some marvellous quality posts and some absolute shockers; some canny predictions and some others so far off the mark to be embarrassing, some exceptionally humorous posts and some grammar and spelling of laughable standard; some remarkable passion that has brought tears to the eyes and some posts so vindictive to warrant the permanent banishment of the miscreant.
I have been lucky enough to attend some great Club functions as one of many of us who are Big Footy Player Sponsors. And at every one of those it has been terrific to meet and get to know a number of other Big Footy posters. Being part of the BF Player Sponsor group has been worth every cent.
I’ve seen many posters come and go, several of whom are probably still around here, having changed identities once or more. Many have been banned for indiscretions; and some on more than one occasion; while I am yet to get either a yellow or red card in that time. I’m not quite sure whether my record is something to be proud of or ashamed of.
I hate to think how many hours I have spent on Big Footy. Even more so when so many of those hours I should have been working. But I wouldn’t have wanted it any different. Luckily my boss is a very casual individual when it comes to monitoring his workers output, probably because he and I are the same person.
For all of those hours I have been a reader rather than a poster, averaging marginally over one post a day. I never cease to be amazed at the number of posts some people manage in a day, every day.
But perhaps the highlight of all that time could have so easily been the lowlight, when in 2007, as a group I think that the North Big Footy team played some small part in saving the club from relocation to the Gold Coast. Clearly there were many other people who were crucial at that time but what this board did more than anything else, was that it galvanised so many of us to get off our (in my case fat) posteriors and do something. Mine was a pretty miniscule effort, calling in a couple of times to talkback radio, but at least I did something that I might otherwise not if it hadn’t been for the wonderful spirit that the North Big Footy Board radiated for the survival of this Melbourne based club.
I could say so much more but self-indulgence has its limits so I will finish with just one final thought.
Thank God we still have the North Melbourne Football Club.
