Ten Years on Big Footy

I hope I might be forgiven for a small dose of self indulgence. Today represents 10 years since I joined Big Footy. It seems such a long time.

It has been a wonderful journey. It has been a journey that has had many highs but some lows.

I have read some marvellous quality posts and some absolute shockers; some canny predictions and some others so far off the mark to be embarrassing, some exceptionally humorous posts and some grammar and spelling of laughable standard; some remarkable passion that has brought tears to the eyes and some posts so vindictive to warrant the permanent banishment of the miscreant.

I have been lucky enough to attend some great Club functions as one of many of us who are Big Footy Player Sponsors. And at every one of those it has been terrific to meet and get to know a number of other Big Footy posters. Being part of the BF Player Sponsor group has been worth every cent.

I’ve seen many posters come and go, several of whom are probably still around here, having changed identities once or more. Many have been banned for indiscretions; and some on more than one occasion; while I am yet to get either a yellow or red card in that time. I’m not quite sure whether my record is something to be proud of or ashamed of.

I hate to think how many hours I have spent on Big Footy. Even more so when so many of those hours I should have been working. But I wouldn’t have wanted it any different. Luckily my boss is a very casual individual when it comes to monitoring his workers output, probably because he and I are the same person.

For all of those hours I have been a reader rather than a poster, averaging marginally over one post a day. I never cease to be amazed at the number of posts some people manage in a day, every day.

But perhaps the highlight of all that time could have so easily been the lowlight, when in 2007, as a group I think that the North Big Footy team played some small part in saving the club from relocation to the Gold Coast. Clearly there were many other people who were crucial at that time but what this board did more than anything else, was that it galvanised so many of us to get off our (in my case fat) posteriors and do something. Mine was a pretty miniscule effort, calling in a couple of times to talkback radio, but at least I did something that I might otherwise not if it hadn’t been for the wonderful spirit that the North Big Footy Board radiated for the survival of this Melbourne based club.

I could say so much more but self-indulgence has its limits so I will finish with just one final thought.

Thank God we still have the North Melbourne Football Club.

Top post, Horace.

Put me down as another one who's always enjoyed reading your contributions to the forum over the time that I've been here.

And maximum respect for stepping out from behind your username when challenged by one of those GC assclowns back in '07. Definitely gets a spot on my Bigfooty highlight reel. Very few people on this site have the plums to remove the mask of anonymity, but you didn't hesitate, and I remember thinking at the time that it spoke volumes of your character and integrity.

Forum is lucky to have class acts like yourself, Horace. :thumbsu:

Wow 10 years, great effort Horace. You've withstood the test of time and been able to hang around for a decade.... anybody who can do that around here needs special recognition!
Well done mate, keep up the good posting.

Well said TOD. I've always enjoyed your posts Horace. You and Mr Reliable make a great modern day Laurel and Hardy act on our board with your wit and wisdom.

I've seen you get worked up on occasion but it's a rarity. You maintain your composure here as well as anyone, and your reminders to all who'll listen of the hurt you and other Fitzroy supporters still hold deep is appreciated. Congrats on your tenth anniversary mate and keep up the great work you do here whilst at work where you should be actually working. Semantics really.......onya Horace. :thumbsu:

Congratulations, if that's the right word, Horace! :thumbsu:

I still recall your generous offer when I visited for Carey's first match v NM and have always appreciated the dignity of your posts, often standing out within a thread for this reason.

p.s. Any boss who stops anyone from reading BF is a bum.

Mate, I will never get the sheer unadulterated joy of being able to talk FOOTY and NORTH in particular with a real life person who was knowledgeable and passionate that afternoon in Edinburgh a few years back.

Keep up the great work.

Congratulations on a decade of top quality posts, Horace.

It's been a pleasure to read your many contributions throughout the years and to meet you on several occasions and share footy stories and enjoy a few laughs together.

One of the things I respect about you is you're always there for the North Melbourne Football Club - in words and in actions.

Also, thanks to your boss for not blocking your access to BigFooty during business hours.;)

PS: I assume you're TT's Oliver Hardy???

Horace - I have enjoyed your work -

I read the site most days although I don't write that much. I just enjoy the rants and the changing comings and goings of lovers of the North Melbourne Football Club
Big Footy has a great role to play in keeping us informed.
Looking forward to another 10 years!

Yes, good work over the years, you're an ornament to Bigfooty. Newbie.

Late 2007 the best of times, the worst of times for me too, and the push to get out from behind the keyboard and meet some great Shinboners in a common cause.

Well done Horace and don't worry, there's no need for forgiveness. Big Footy wouldn't exist if not for self indulgence. It's the fuel that drives this place.
