Titans add Jeff Fisher, Bum Phillips, Floyd Reese to Ring of Honor

Posted by Josh Alper on July 14, 2021, 11:36 AM EDT

Two former head coaches were among the three people announced as new members of the Titans Ring of Honor on Wednesday, but only one of them coached for the Titans.

Bum Phillips only coached the Oilers, but he’ll be going into the Titans’ Ring of Honor due to the change of names that came along with their move from Houston after the 1996 season. Phillips is joined in the class by longtime head coach Jeff Fisher and former General Manager Floyd Reese.

Fisher went 142-120 over 17 seasons with the organization and led them to their only Super Bowl appearance after the 1999 season. The Titans lost Super Bowl XXXIV 23-16 to the Rams when wide receiver Kevin Dyson was stopped just short of the end zone on the final play of the game.

Fisher was also the final coach of the Oilers as he became the head coach in Houston during the 1994 season and remained in the job when the franchise moved to its new home.

Phillips was 55-35 in six seasons with the Oilers. An Earl Campbell-led offense helped them to two AFC title games in the late 1970s, but they lost to the Steelers each time.

Reese was hired by the Oilers as a linebackers coach in 1986, moved into the personnel department in 1990 and became the General Manager in 1994. He built the roster for the team that Fisher coached to the Super Bowl and remained with the franchise through the 2006 season.

Julio Jones has missed the Titans' last two practices with an undisclosed injury.
It's believed to be a leg injury, but coach Mike Vrabel isn't divulging any details, only saying the Titans will be cautious with their new star wideout. It doesn't sound too serious. Vrabel indicated we may not see a whole lot of Jones during training camp and the preseason. Injuries have been Jones' downfall in his career. He's currently being drafted as the WR14 in half-PPR drafts.

Titans signed S Tedric Thompson.
Thompson spent eight games with the Chiefs last season but was cut in November. This is his third team since after short stints with the Browns and Broncos. The 26-year-old played in 29 games for the Seahawks across the 2017-2019 campaigns.

Former Titans General Manager Floyd Reese died at 73 on Saturday.

Reese joined the Oilers as a linebackers coach in 1986 and moved into the personnel department as an assistant G.M. in 1990. He moved up to the General Manager job in 1994 and remained with the organization through the 2006 season. He would work for ESPN after leaving the Titans and joined the Patriots as a senior advisor from 2009 to 2013.

The Titans made their only Super Bowl experience during Reese’s tenure and the team announced his addition to their Ring of Honor earlier this year.

“This is a sad day for our Titans family,” Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk said in a statement. “I would like to send along my deepest condolences to Floyd’s wife, Sally, to his children, grandchildren and extended family. Floyd spent over two decades with our franchise in a variety of roles – position coach, assistant general manager and ultimately, general manager – and he excelled at all of them. As general manager, he built a team that saw sustained success and helped guide our franchise in the toughest of times and the highest moments. His keen eye for talent led him to some of the best players in our team’s history, which led the team to some of our greatest accomplishments.

We look forward to remembering and honoring his legacy this season as he is formally inducted into our Ring of Honor.”
Our condolences go out to Reese’s family, friends and loved ones on their loss.

Titans signed RB Javian Hawkins.
Recently released from Atlanta, Hawkins (5’8/183) failed to carve out a role behind Qadree Ollison but will receive another shot to win a No. 3 job, this time in Tennessee behind Darrynton Evans. An undersized UDFA, Hawkins doesn't move the needle for fantasy as he continues his uphill battle to make an NFL roster. He'll likely receive all the reps he can handle in the team's final preseason contest.
