Titans have used an NFL record 95 players this year. Remarkable that they are the #1 seed considering that.

Vrabel should be coach of the year.
95 players?

Jim Haslett, three other assistants out in Tennessee

Posted by Josh Alper on January 25, 2022, 12:31 PM EST

Titans head coach Mike Vrabel offered support for offensive coordinator Todd Downing in a Monday press conference, but didn’t rule out the possibility of other changes to his coaching staff.

Some of those changes have come to light on Tuesday. According to multiple reports, the Titans are parting ways with inside linebackers coach Jim Haslett, assistant defensive line coach Kenechi Udeze, assistant special teams coach Matt Edwards, and assistant strength and conditioning coach Mondray Gee.

Haslett spent the last two seasons with the Titans. After a run as the Steelers defensive coordinator in the late 1990s, Haslett spent six seasons as the Saints’ head coach. He was fired after the 2005 season and subsequently spent time as the Rams defensive coordinator, the Rams’ interim head coach, Washington’s defensive coordinator, and a position coach with the Bengals.

Udeze was a 2004 first-round pick by the Vikings and just completed his first year as an NFL assistant. Edwards spent four years with the Titans and Gee was in the organization for three years.

Jon Robinson backs Todd Downing against “knee-jerk” calls to fire him

Posted by Josh Alper on February 7, 2022, 9:27 AM EST

The Titans earned the top seed in the AFC this season, but their stay in the playoffs was a brief one as they lost 19-16 at home to the Bengals in the divisional round.

It was not a good day for the Tennessee offense, which led to criticism of quarterback Ryan Tannehill and offensive coordinator Todd Downing. General Manager Jon Robinson has been emphatic about Tannehill’s place on the team being secure and he’s offering similar support for Downing.

“There’s zero patience in today’s society,” Robinson said, via Ben Arthur of the Tennessean. “[People] don’t understand everything that goes into game planning and what’s built into plays. . . . There’s a lot of stuff that goes into it. But when it doesn’t go the way somebody wants it, the knee-jerk reaction is ‘we have to fire this [person]. We have to do this.’ They are good people, got great families. They’re smart football men, everybody on that offensive side of the football. I’m proud to work with them.”

While Downing will apparently be staying in his job, the team is reportedly moving toward hiring former Texans offensive coordinator Tim Kelly as they work toward puttin g together a more potent offense for next season.

Titans sign Mike Vrabel, Jon Robinson to contract extensions

Posted by Myles Simmons on February 8, 2022, 4:25 PM EST

The Titans are keeping continuity with their top football brass.

Tennessee announced on Tuesday that head coach Mike Vrabel and General Manager Jon Robinson have each reached agreements on contract extensions with the club.

The lengths of the new deals were not disclosed. Both men were previously under contract through 2022.

“I am proud to say that Jon and Mike will be leading our football team for years to come,” Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk said in a statement. “I have seen the team improve on a yearly basis under their direction, and I know their singular goal is to deliver a championship for our fans. Together they have developed a culture within our organization that has been essential to our success. Their values align with mine and what I want the Titans to be. They demand excellence from themselves and others, work well together, are always striving to improve and they care deeply for our players and staff.”

Robinson was hired as the team’s G.M. in 2016. The Titans have not had a losing season under Robinson. But after a pair of 9-7 seasons with former head coach Mike Mularkey to begin Robinson’s tenure, the Titans hired Vrabel in 2018.

Vrabel’s first two years ended with 9-7 records, but the club advanced to the AFC Championship game in 2019. The Titans have won the AFC South in each of the last two seasons, but have been one-and-done in the postseason.

The Titans also officially announced former Texans offensive coordinator Tim Kelly has been hired as the team’s passing game coordinator. And Tennessee has hired Bobby King as its inside linebackers coach.

Mike Vrabel wins coach of the year

Titans coach Mike Vrabel’s team isn’t playing in the Super Bowl, but he’s still had a week to remember.

He earned a contract extension with the Titans earlier this week, along with General Manager Jon Robinson. On Thursday night, Vrabel was awarded as the NFL’s coach of the year during NFL Honors.

He received 36 of 50 votes, with Packers coach Matt LaFleur getting eight, Raiders interim coach Rich Bisaccia three, Bengals coach Zac Taylor two and Patriots coach Bill Belichick one.

(The awards are voted on three days after the season ends and for the regular season only.)

Vrabel has a 41-24 record in his four seasons as head coach, including an AFC-best 12-5 season in 2021.

Between COVID-19 and injuries, the Titans used an NFL-record 91 players this season. They played the final nine games without the NFL’s leading rusher, Derrick Henry, and also had key players like receiver A.J. Brown, receiver Julio Jones, left tackle Taylor Lewan and cornerback Kristian Fulton miss multiple games due to injury issues.

That’s what separated Vrabel from the other candidates for the award.

Titans exploring new stadium in Nashville

Posted by Josh Alper on February 17, 2022, 3:39 PM EST

The Titans were in talks with Nashville about renovations to Nissan Stadium, but they may be getting an entirely new home instead.

In a recent appearance on WNSR, via Terry McCormick of TitansInsider.com, Butch Spyridon of the Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau said that talks about renovations resulted in plans that would run to a cost of around $600 million. A Titans spokespersonn told Nate Rau of Axios that the price tag is actually estimated at nearly double that amount and that “we need to take a step back and re-evaluate if a stadium renovation is the most responsible option forward and explore other paths.”

The spokesperson notes that the stadium’s structural frame “needs to be largely replaced with steel” and that “mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems need to be completely replaced.” Nashville Mayor John Cooper confirmed “revised cost estimates require us to closely review whether a new stadium would be a better long-term financial decision.”

Talks between the team and the city are reportedly progressing well, but moving from renovations to a new stadium raises issues that will need to be ironed out. Among them is whether the stadium will have a roof, which would cost more while also putting the city in the running for bigger events like the Super Bowl and Final Four in the future. The financing for any building is another significant question that would have to be answered before moving forward in Nashville.

Titans working on plans to build new stadium next to Nissan

NASHVILLE, Tenn.

The Tennessee Titans have gone from trying to modernize Nissan Stadium to working on plans for a new stadium right next door after renovation costs more than doubled to $1.2 billion.

Burke Nihill, the Titans' president, discussed the team's plans Thursday at a Metro Sports Authority board meeting, according to The Tennessean. The Titans currently are working with Metro Nashville officials on the design and costs of building a new stadium on Nissan's parking lots between the stadium and Interstate 24.

Nihill noted inflation is driving costs higher, and both Nashville and the Titans want to finish work in time for the 2026 season.

“We're trying to move wisely but with a sense of urgency,” Nihill said. “There's a path forward that, if we have alignment by the fall, we could have a new stadium open (by 2026). It's aggressive, but we believe it's in play.”

Nashville is among the cities bidding to host the 2026 World Cup with FIFA officials having toured Nissan Stadium and Music City last September.
The Titans originally planned to renovate the stadium built for $292 million that opened in 1999 on a 30-year lease. Nashville officials have been working on plans for a year to redevelop hundreds of acres around Nissan Stadium on the east bank of the Cumberland River.

That included renovating Nissan Stadium, with the first estimate $600 million. That doubled when contractors found issues such as the prefabricated concrete used to build the stadium that is aging and difficult to renovate. Other infrastructure also is wearing out.

Nihill said a new stadium is the better value in the long run.

“This is a very basic building in the eyes of the NFL,” Nihill said. “This is one of the bottom 20% of buildings in the NFL built before 9/11. Security enhancements adopted by the NFL haven't been added.”

Nihill estimated that reaching a deal for the new stadium, how to pay for it and design the new building could take more than a year. Construction should take 31 months.
