not the Leap Though
Dave, you could say that Howe became a better and more reliable player this season after he stopped his leaping ways. Often leaping just causes chaos in defence and defence is the last place we need chaos. Just a little leap here and there in a controlled manner is all he needs to do!

And if any of that happened Murphy ain’t playing regardless

Maybe 10-12 of all the kids drafted will play a decent amount of games. Jiath ain’t gonna be one of them. He’s built like a tooth-pick and only came good in the last month. He’s smaller than Pendlebury. A decent key player over 200 cm is worth their weight in gold. Particularly when Howe and (probably) Nathan Murphy are finished.

Essendon in 2020 say hi. Thanks for the laugh 😂

You’re nuts. Just have a look at his brother a couple years in the system. Only came good in the last month means he has a continuing scope of improvement I would have thought.

Very happy with this selection. An intercept marking general defender was a huge list need. No-one will ever like-for-like replace Howe who is a one-of-a-kind. But Jiath looks like he'll be a bunch of fun to watch.

You mean like his brother wasn’t one of them? An elite interceptor will always have a good chance to become an AFL player. It’s arguably the best attribute you can have in a defender. It’s also something very difficult to develop if you don’t have it. His weaknesses (strength and ground ball winning) are much easier to train up and improve with experience.

He's a kid. Have you not seen his brother? He was once a similar build to TJ.

I’m not overly excited by this.
Sorry.
Would’ve preferred a solid key defender like Ollie Murphy.
Nathan Murphy is punchdrunk, Howe is long in the tooth, Dean’s body is made of glass, Frampton is a spud and if Moore gets injured we are screwed.

Many here have a glass-half-empty outlook but the way you've just described the defensive line-up is award material.

Bruzzy and IQ aren't too shabby.

Leggy goes OK.

JFN couldn't get a game because we have to fit Crisp in there.

An injured Moore would be impossible to cover in any side. Murphy would be an enormous loss, as was Langdon when his career was cut short way too soon.

It's OK to not rate a recruit but the way you've just described the backline isn't based on the reality that this team has just won a flag.

EDIT: I would have drafted the kid just to spite Hawthorn.

Because his brother can play, doesn’t mean he can. The AFL/VFL has been littered with brothers that couldn’t live up to expectations.
Jiath may prove to be a decent footballer. I just don’t think it’s what we need. We don’t need another smallish mid-sized player that can run off half back. I’m just not buying it.

Great to see you’ve given the kid a chance then.

I’m sure us drafting one of the several 200cm+ plonkers who Hine passes up on every year (who then go on to not ever play an AFL game) would totally be a better choice.

Jiath looks an exciting pick up and a great fit for us.

Geelong went from being galaxies ahead of everybody to not playing finals.

Sh*t happens.

A pick in the late 30s won't reverse that decline if that's where we're headed.

Hine. The dude that gave us the mighty short people like Ben Kennedy, Tim Broomhead, Cooper Murley.
I don’t believe a single player drafted in 2022 played a senior game?…. Correction, Ryan lasted 10 minutes before Rayner snuffed his lights out.

My comment was in regards to his brother’s physical size he’s put on. TJ won’t be skinny for long.

I’m tipping they see him moving into that intercepting role once Howe finishes up. He’s got the long arms and the leap. Exactly why they sniffed around Khamis from the dogs also.

The side that won the flag and lost 4 games for the entire season?

We just won the premiership without McStay & Murphy & Adams & Noble.

We've picked up Schultz.

We have plenty of young players we've been developing, many of whom haven't yet had an uninterrupted pre season. Hopefully they do get a strong pre season in this year. Dean, AJ, Reef, Fin, Harrison, Allan, Ryan, Krueger, Carmichael, Frampton, Begg, Steene ..

Picking up any tall (or not so tall) defender in this year's draft whether it be Ollie Murphy or TJ or whoever, will not be the reason we are or are not successful next year ..

I think all 3 of the players we've picked up show all the traits Fly & the coaches look for in our players & suits our game style.

correct. And what happens this year will bear no resemblance to what will happen in the future. I don’t think a 190 cm guy (tops 80 kg) is going to be the centre piece of your future defence. It’s also unlikely Charlie Dean and/or Billie Frampton are likely to be your future, either.
