I am going to Thailand for 2 weeks next January. Booking it now. Wanting to know how i should split my time between Bangkok and Phuket. Was thinking 3 days in Bangkok and 11 in Phuket. Would that be appropriate.

"Appropriate" is very much a personal thing. If your main focus for the trip is the beach and the things that go with it, it may well be a good mix for you.

Three days might not be enough in Bangkok, or it may be too much. Its an interesting, but tiring, city. I'd almost say start in Bangkok - with a day trip or two to nearby towns in mind - and when you get too much of an itch for the beach, book the rest of your accommodation at Phuket. Of course, depending on the type of accommodation you are after, the type of traveller you are, and who you are travelling with, etc, this might not be realistic.

Saw a show on foxtel tonight. The canoe trip to phang nga bay looked beautiful. Something I am definately going to do when there.

Also try the many phuket forums with heaps of info (more than you will get here) such as tripadvisor which is really good.

there is also this friday night bbq where you meet up with a heap of people, eat a $3 all you can eat bbq, drink $3 jugs of beer, then go to a local bar called the Sunshine Bar (in Rawai, which is out of patong) and get messy :D

I love Bangkok, plenty to do.

I haven't been to Phuket but if your have the time go to Koh Samui. Beautiful place, great beaches, nice hotels, good shopping.

If at Bangkok go to MBK shopping centre which is amazing, go on boats, go to the night markets, massages, and the usual tourist attractions were all fun when i went.

There is also a railway market in Bangkok (which not many tourists know about, i dont think?) which was quite an experience. The market is setup right on the railway line and every hour the train into bangkok goes through and all the stalls have to move all their product back from the railway line with like 30 seconds to go! before the train smashes their stuff!

Phuket is awesome went there in february. Definately do the Phi Phi island tours, expensive maby but well worth it, was best tour I did while there :thumbsu: watch out for dem lady boys! and be mindful plenty of undercover cops... so try not to do drugs or other silly things ;)

Im heading off there in 4 weeks, spending all my time in Phuket. Anyone got any tips, suggestions for the stay?

What is your budget per night?

I have stayed at many places in Phuket...

I really like the Banthai Beach Resort...

Pretty much smack bang in the middle of Patong...

Across the road from the beach...

Couldnt ask for more!!!

If anyone goes to Thailand they would be mad not to go to Phi Phi island!!!! Absolutely awesome. I went to Thailand with my girlfriend over new years this year and these are the places we went to :

Bangkok - not a amssive fan, very humid, smelly and just plain dirty. However i imagine singles would love the place.

Raelay (not sure on the spelling) - which is a province of Krabi, that was prob our 2nd favourite spot after Phi Phi. Great beaches and no access from roads so its a nice quiet place with a great beach with good snorkling and canoeing.

Krabi Town - not much there, mainly a port where people go to get to other places, does have a great night market though, some very interesting food, and by interesting i mean weird!

Ko Lanta - more of a quiet spot, prob better for a honeymoon type of place. Great place though

Phuket (patong beach)- Awesome place, great beaches, great pubs, bars and shopping, Bangla Road, i cant wait to pub crawl down there again. A great hotel to stay at is The Merlin Beach Resort, its just down the road from the actual patong beach so its nice and quiet but an awesome resort, a bit pricy though.

Phi Phi Island - Possibly the best beaches you could want, especially Maya Bay (where "The Beach" was filmed). Monkey Beach (short canoe trip around the main beach). Great pubs and restaurants and just the ultimate sight-seeing and relaxing you could want. I love this place!!!!!!!!!!!!

Planning on going back to Thailand in April 2009 and definately going back to Patong and Phi Phi.
