Currently reading The Godfather by Mario Puzo. He has a pretty simplistic writing style but I like it, I've blitzed through it the last few days. First 100 pages or so was like reading the script for the movie almost word for word, scene for scene but it expanded after the initial setup to add some extras that didn't make it or didn't translate in the movies.

I've ordered the sequel The Sicilian but will probably take a week or so to get here as I wanted the same edition as the The Godfather. I also ordered Infinite Jest as I've heard some good things and the author was references a lot in the last book I read David Lynch: Man From Another Place.

The Lynch book was ok but I would've preferred a bit more dissection of his more recent films, the backstories to Eraserhead and Elephant Man were interesting though.

Other books I've read this year are Gridiron Genius by Mike Lombardi which was great, Lenin by Robert Service which was pretty good, Time out of Joint (Phillip K Dick) and Starship Troopers (Robert Heinlein) which were both fantastic and Robbie the autobiography by Robbie Flower written shortly after his retirement (87 or 88). That one was OK but not as meaty as the footy biographies we've come to expect these days.
The godfather is a great read, got one that was printed in the 70s years ago off my pop

Just finished Oathbringer by Brandon Sanderson, looking forward to the 4th book coming out later this year.

I must say though, the last book did start to get a bit confusing and I'm not sure I fully understood what was going on with everything, but enjoyable nonetheless.

The Stormlight Archive is on my "some day when it's finished" list

Same. Ice and Fire the only series I've started before it had been finished and somewhat regret it now, although I really enjoyed reading it at the time.

Started reading The Expanse in 2016 and I've enjoyed it however it's not something that needed to take up 4 years (at minimum) in the back of my mind.

On the other hand, started reading the completed Malazan Book of the Fallen and I probably would benefit from enforced breaks because each book is so dense and long. Though I could just choose to take breaks myself anyway.

Read The Dark Tower after it was completed and I feel for anyone who was with that across decades as it fell apart toward the end.

George R R Martin and to a lesser extent Patrick Rothfuss (neither of whose books I've read) have probably and ironically ****ed it for anyone new by working out being a celebrity author with an unfinished series is more profitable than finishing and becoming old news.

I was in high school when I started Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series, and there was already four books out then, I was 36 when the final book came out.

Malazan is one of the very few fantasy series that I'd like to go back and finish but it's been so long that I'd really like to start from the beginning and that makes it a big commitment with the amount of reading time I have now days.

Up to 5 (of 10) of Malazan and feel I've got to make it all the way through, a break would slow it down. I did what you did after the 1st book and by the time I came back had to read it again. It's perhaps a unique series with fans saying "you will probably be taking on the most challenging literary trial that you have ever tried in your life" - https://www.sfsite.com/05a/ma343.htm

Wheel of Time is the reason for my rule of not starting unfinished series (Ice and Fire excepted).

I started WoT in high school also, I think there were 9 books out at that time. I got stuck around book 7 and stopped reading. Wanting to pick it up again later on, I had forgotten everything so I started again. This time I got to book 8 before getting stuck. Around the time the final book was released I read summaries of books 1-8 online, then picked it up from there and finished the series.

I'm scared to start Malazan, but really want to. Just so intimidating.

The Wheel of Time I considered before picking Malazan. Fans saying the middle books get bogged down was partly why I passed. Also I was intending to only read one big fantasy series and figured I should go with the biggest and best (allegedly).

The middle slog of WoT isn't as bad as it is made out to be. Yes, a lot of it is kinda pointless and goes nowhere, but it is bearable. Some of the complaints are also to do with the fact that one of the main characters (and especially their love interest) that are a heavy focus over those books do cause mixed opinions amongst the fan base. Saying that, there are still some fantastic moments over the 3-4 books. The people who complain the loudest are generally those that read them as they were being released so had years between the 'good books' for lack of a better term. It is much easier to get through when you can pick the next book up straight away. They also tend to be some of the smaller sized books in the series.

I read Malazan before Wheel of Time and Malazan was my all-time favourite series up until that point. I loved Erikson's world and he created my favourite fantasy character (Kruppe), but I find the smaller world and smaller cast of better fleshed out main characters of WoT to be more up my alley. I still love Malazan and have it as my number 2.

I started just before the third book came out. Though it's not the longest series wait. I read Magician at 13 and was Pug's age. When Magician's End came out wrapping Pug's story up I was 40. Other series like Shannara and Sword of Truth have taken decades as well. So far Jordan is the only one to pass away before finishing of them. Though given GRRM's slow speed and age/health I expect the same for A Song of Ice and Fire. Without the notes Jordan left for at least some sort of resolution (better than the debacle that was the TGOT TV series once it passed the books).

I have no doubt that a large part of Martin's problem is rescuing and resolving the various storylines that were ****ed and/or ignored by the TV show.

Anyone read Dune? I'm making my way through it in anticipation of the movie coming out. It's.. interesting. Very different from a lot of things I've read. It has enough momentum that I'm not bored with it, but the pacing is just very.. odd.

Terrific book, nearly always gets voted the best SFF* book (*it's right slap-bang on the divide between SF and Fantasy).

The previous video/movie adaptations have been, to say the least, unfortunate; I remember one film reviewer saying they misspelled it, there should have been a "g" in place of the "e".

Maybe it's just me struggling with the language, the pacing for the first third seemed quite strange to me.

It's effing epic. GOAT sci-fi for me.

When does it pick up? I just found the start very jarring because we went from having a very prolonged, drawn out introduction to the planet, setting up the Duke's forces, etc. then suddenly it changes.

I read it a long while ago so I can't remember exactly but from memory it kind of just picks up pace throughout the book to the ending.

I am currently reading The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie. It is pretty good half way in.
The First Law trilogy is one of the best modern fantasy series IMO. While not as far-reaching as some other series, in terms of scope of plot and number of characters, it's a simple, fun read with good characters and really good fight scenes. Some brutal encounters in there.
