News The AFL want names on jumpers

True, but (in my biased opinion) the loyalty of players is more important to the culture of our game than others. That said, with the introduction of free agency and player names on jumper, I feel that the AFL are doing whatever they can to fast track the removal of that loyalty from our game.

Sorry but I do not know anyone in world sport more loyal than this man.

The man who handed in a transfer request to go to Chelsea some years ago? yeah.

Besides, that would be an outlier in a sea of players who have left their teams for money and bigger opportunities.

Being a casual fan of this sport, I'm glad his name is on the back of his top, otherwise I wouldn't have known who he was...

(Seriously)
(Did sound very sarcastic though, didn't it?)
(But I was trying to make the point that names on the back is a good idea)

Watching tonight's game on the T.V. I can pick the numbers out way easier than the names. The names are hardly visable in the middle of play, or from any shot further out that 1 metre.

It looks so bloody shit why even bother.

I'm struggling to even make out the numbers with this big blob white/yellow above the numbers.

It's just the stupidest idea ever all just about the kids simple as that.

If they really wanted to distinguish players front and back. They would put numbers on the front of jumpers.

Other than that its just the stupidest thing ever.

You can't even read the names in close ups because of the GPS. They just make the jumper look amateurish.

You've been able to buy heat pressed names for years, if you want to spew on your jumper do it yourself. But there's no point doing it to the players' jumpers.

Commentators complaining that they can't see the names, so no benefit for them.
No benefit to the crowd.
The only time TV viewers get a look at them is when a player is lining up for goal.
Team mates aren't going to forget their team mates names and have to look on their back for them.

No real point. Doesn't really matter if they stay or go.

If they're such a stupid idea why does every sport in the world have player names on the back?

There's no way they can persist with the current setup, but a bit more planning and execution can make this work.

Back sponsor logo needs to be lower and lettering on the back needs to be removed or move before we can start putting names on the back.

I don't have a problem with the names. I was at the game tonight, and the names are pretty useless at the ground. As you can't make them out unless they're on the boundary. The font is way too small. But too be honest. Didn't really notice one way or the other.

AFL is one of the fastest sports. For example, in the NFL we see a lot of eye level shots and heaps of staying around, plus without being able to look at someone's face, it's hard to tell. In baseball, there is a lot of standing around.heaps of back shots and standing and playing in the NBA. Shouldn't be there in Ice Hockey, and would like to see it introduced into the NRL.

The reason names are on jumpers has nothing to do with the game.
It has to do with merchandise sales.

If I buy a New England Patriots jersey, with #75 on it, it comes with WILFORK on the back.
If Wilfork hadn't re-structured his contract and re-signed, he wouldn't play for the Patriots.
So I would have a jersey that has an ex-player's name on it.
Most fans don't want that, so they go buy another jersey with a current player's name on it.

The AFL are banking on the same thing happening in their merchandise sales.

You hardly ever see a player's name in any game, let alone our game.
But make no mistake, the reason they are there has NOTHING to do with seeing the name on the jersey during a game. That's just the reasons they give us to accept it. Because they feel uncomfortable with the truth, which is, we would like to increase merchandise revenues, and this is the way other competitions achieve it.

I like the idea of names, but they should only do it if they make them bigger and get rid of back sponsors so the jumpers don't look overcrowded, and they could only do that if the increased revenue from named jumper sales would offset the loss in sponsorship revenue.
