Good day for Shenwari and Young, which I am pleased to see.
I would imagine it is not a Test match. More likely a five day First Class match. It was decided a while ago as part of the big three offer.
I do wonder how will it actually work though.
I'd going to assume it would be Zimbabwe vs Ireland.
Is the Zimbabwe vs Ireland match a test match?
Does Ireland gain full test status with tours against other test teams if they beat Zimbabwe?
Does Zimbabwe lose test status if they lose to Ireland?
I'm fairly sure I read that the loser loses Test status. But they would maintain Full Member status. The next winner of the Intercontinental Cup may, or may not, then be given the chance to earn temporary Test status. I do not believe that has been decided.
So, for example, Ireland might get status and then lose it before they have time to become competitive.
Fair to suggest Afghanistan are more threatening in the shorter format compared to the longer form?
Do you have any idea why Hassan and the two zadrans are not playing for afghanistan?
They don't see them for first class cricket at the moment and I doubt they will ever. Hassan hasn't been part of the first class team for 4 years. Dawlat Zadran played in their last intercontinental cup match - the final against Ireland, but again hasn't played since then. Shapoor Zadran has a poor first class record. I believe they are focusing the 3 on limited overs cricket where they can do most damage. They are in their late 20's so by the time Afghanistan could be playing test cricket they will be in their 30's. With the lack of facilities, it makes sense to have them focus on limited overs cricket - with the T20 world cup qualifiers coming up in July. That's where they can do the most damage.
Dawlatzai is a permanent fixture in their first class team (24) and the best fast bowler they have in all forms IMO. He would have played the world cup if he didn't spend much of last year injured.
They are developing Yamin Ahmadzai (22) and Sayid Shirzad (20) whom have shown good signs at a young age. There's other bowlers around the traps too that are coming up. I think they see one of those as a key to them in 2017/2018.
Interesting. I know Hassan is injury prone but he averages 21 with the ball in first class cricket. agree with you on Dawlatazi he seems very impressive, will watch the others with interest as they develop
He could be injured at the moment hence why he isn't playing but I think with his injury history that they have decided to leave him for limited overs cricket where he will be more damaging and is less demanding. I'm pretty sure on that. We'll know for certain in round 2 in a few months time. If he plays the qualifiers next month and isn't selected for round 2 then it's clear that they plan on keeping him for limited overs.
Afghanistan have named their squad for the T20 qualifying rounds next month.
Asghar Stanekzai (captain)
Javed Ahmadi (Vice Captain)
Nawroz Mangal
Mohammad Shahzad (WK)
Mohammad Nabi
Samiullah Shenwari
Shafiqullah Shafaq (WK)
Najibullah Zadran
Mirwais Ashraf
Dawlat Zadran
Shapoor Zadran
Hamid Hassan
Sharafuddin Ashraf
Aftab Alam
Gulbadin Naib

Bit surprised that Dawlatzai isn't in as he's fully fit now, but with what was discussed above, they are keeping their limited overs and first class bowlers separate.
I'd say this will be their first choice XI
Ahmadi
Mangal
Shahzad
Stanikzai
Shenwari
Nabi
Zadran
Ashraf
Zadran
Zadran
Hassan
P.S: Yes I am a fan of Afghanistan cricket and follow them closely.
Ed Joyce was already our greatest ever cricketer and he has only cemented that status with his stunning 200 in Malahide. It's too far for me to travel to but have been following it on CricketEurope.
I have been at quite a few of our inter-provincial games, which is our attempt at creating a proper structure below international and above club cricket. Playing the three-day game at Downpatrick is great from an aesthetic point of view but the way the boundary slopes upwards around most of the ground and the shortish boundaries don't make it the most amenable venue to top class cricket. Nor is the wicket as good as you would find at Stormont, Comber or Waringstown. The climate and lack of multi-day cricket in this country makes it hard to prepare the standard of wicket you would find in county cricket and that's before we get onto the playing side of things. Stuart Thompson played really well for his ton and McBrine outbowled the taller Cameron-Dow in the battle of the second spinners (to Dockers). The series is still held together by the overseas pros though as only Leinster are strong enough without them. Bracewell is rightly giving Young his head and I think Tyrone Kane will show in the upcoming World T20 qualifiers (split between here and Scotland) that he deserves a shot in the two longer formats as well.
