Which club (Redsox or Dodgers) did better ouot of this trade?

Pretty simple for mine. Bay's consistent hitting, defence and sense of playing for the team, has the Sox far and away ahead of the Dodgers in this one. Manny is and has been a great clutch hitter over a long period of time, but his lack of desire particularly defensively makes this a no brainer.

Thoughts?

While I agree with you and I myself would take Bay if both were avaliable it's hard to look past Manny's numbers last year after he was traded to LA.
53 games, 17 home runs, 53 rbi's, 396 average. He pretty much got them to the NLCS on his own.
He seemed to want to prove a point last year, whether he has the same desire this year I'm not sure but I think both LA and Boston would be happy with this trade.

Another aspect of the trade that I didnt mention in the Op is the salary size.

I will absolutely agree that Manny is a hitting genius, esp in the clutch. One thing that I cant work out is why he went to a national league team. Surely there would be more interest from AL teams given he could play as a DH. Is a definite liability in the field.

Loved him as a Redsox player, but think the Sox are clearly better off without him on their roster.

Of course Bay is the winner.

Costs a hell of alot less, causes less hassles and is younger.

I'll give the caveat that I am a Red Sox fan before I post opinion...

...Right now, I think it's just about split down the middle, even factoring in the recent demise of Mannywood. Ramirez was the reason that the Dodgers found themselves in the play-offs last year, and Bay has been absolutely clutch in 2009 with the Red Sox. Think I read somewhere yesterday that Bay was second in the Majors in RBI's (35 after this morning's game against the Halos) and had the best combined percentage in the Majors.

Personally, I'm loving J-Bay's work at the moment, given the injury worries we've had recently and Papi's slump. He and Lowell (and JD, to an extent) are keeping us in it offensively

While Manny was amazing for the Dodgers, there's no way he would have put up those numbers if he was still in Boston. Simply because he didn't want to be there.
He didn't want to play well for the Sox and he does want to for the Dodgers.

Just shows how much of a freak he is that he can turn it on and off like a switch.

Manny bein Manny got the Dodgers to the NLCS and will this year. He will get his hammy right and have a massive second half
