They are behind only Michael Jackson in my opinion, so they are ultimate legends.

However I don't agree that they are the most imitated and influential act of all time.

Imitated goes to Elvis, influential goes to Michael again.

Didn't they change, or, invent a new structure for popular music?

Anyway, I voted for somewhere in the middle. They are most certainly not my favourite band ever.

as for the Beatles, love those guys; Lennon's voice defines rock n' roll for me, MacCartney at his best when providing the most pristine backing vocals one could imagine.
George Harrison an underrated gem, recently got his album All things must pass and it has some great stuff on it ..

simple equation when it comes to Jackson.

Michael Jackson w/Quincy Jones = awesome.
Michael Jackson w/o Quincy Jones = awful.

Dangerous was awful?

History had it's highs (and lows).

Invincible was a mess sadly (You Rock My World, Butterflies, Break of Dawn & Threatened were great though).

McCartney arguably the greatest bass player ever too. They did it all.

George was underrated but when you're in the same band as two musical geniuses..
For one thing he brought the Indian influence to the band, the sitar etc.

Your argument is commercialism. Sales, facebook followers, game sales etc. Ridiculous arguments. The Beatles post 1964 weren't commercialistic at all. But they changed music forever. They had an impact Michael Jackson only dreamt of.

And yes, MJ had a huge influence. But nothing compared to The Beatles.

Maybe not as early as 1964, but yes will agree here.

But why the demonization of commercialism?

The question one had to ask is how many people did they speak to? & quite frankly, Mike is up there with them mate. It takes a very special person to be able to generate, and hold the fan bases these guys did. Average artists cone and go, but only the true genius can hold those levels of popularity for 40-50 years (remember, Mike had a child career too)

Genius comes on all different levels, not just those we enjoy personally.

Someone above mentioned "who cares" in relation to his dancing and choreograph talents. Why? Because they don't enjoy it? Until such a time as he can post a video of himself competently dancing to the levels Michael could, I call bullshit on that.

They are all entertainers, with differing skill sets.

As for the suggestion that any video made by a Beatles member can be held up against the Thriller mini movie for artistic innovation... lol, just lol. C'mon now

Because they wanted to make music. Not money.

Hell they basically invented Heavy Metal with Helter Skelter.

Ok, saying they invented electronica is going a bit too far i think. Varcose, krautrock (grossley underrated), new wave and detroit techno had a much bigger influence on electronica.

Chemical brothers are hardly the yardstick for good electronica so i don't care if one of their songs sounds similar to a beatles song.

Beatles have not had a big impact on electronica. Infact if anything the beatles have had an adverse effect on electronica, in that electronica rebels against that verse chorus structure - and I thank varcose and krautrock for that.

Beatles are good but **** they're taking credit for everything.

The Beatles invented religion too according to some here, jeez, does John still think he is bigger than Jesus?

The Beatles love by a few of you here is very unhealthy.

Well atleast MJ isn't getting 'lol'd' at anymore, thanks for that meltiger, well said! I'll leave it at this,

For anyone who questions MJ, watch a live performance of Will You Be There (after Quincy Jones), I guarantee you that most of the crowd will be in tears, and something in your heart might tug aswell. :)

Lets have a look at the Beatles MUSICAL output in their recording period.

In 7 years of studio recording between 1963-69: they wrote 13 studio albums.

Not only is this impressive considering they wrote the majority of their songs but they are also some of the most influential and critically acclaimed works.

As one example of critical acclaim the Beatles had 4 of the top 10 of rolling stones 500 greatest albums of all time list. Including the 3 of the top 5 albums. You will find many other musical critics rate at similar level.

Also considered the amount of genres that they successfully ventured into and helped develop: pop, rock, hard rock, folk, ballad, country, blues, rock n roll, psychedelic, progressive, heavy metal etc.

Michael jacksons influence although great is no where near the scale of the beatles despite the fact that he recorded for over three decades as a solo artist…

All in all the beatles win by sheer volume and quality of work, they are unrivaled.

LOL :)

So why leave the German shit holes they were playing in and release Love Me Do?

C'mon now, look without the blinkers.

Claiming "I want to make music, not sell" after having released super commercialized music and already having made squillions doesn't make you any better than those who stick to selling albums.

Save that respect for the many bands around the world slaving away with no hope of ever having the kind of marketing The Beatles received

People keep going on about how MJ was live and how he could dance.

Has anyone actually put up a way in which he influenced MUSIC?

I have never owned a Beatles album and I never intentionally set out to listen to their music, but I'm not silly enough to not know quality when I hear it.
Abba are also possibly the best pop band through the 70s and 80s, but god I cringe when I hear their music.

Oh, and The Beatles did not invent Electronica either.
