I love the fact that Neil does what he wants and tries new stuff all of the time, but I never enjoyed any of those techno, synth albums. I have even tried going back to them to see if I am missing something, but I don't feel it.

The Band's catalogue is still standing the test of time well, particularly if you include Dylan collaborations.
Ain't No More Cane from the Basement Tapes was the first true Band song imo and still one of their best imo, Levon, Rick and Beak all take a verse and meet up on the chorus. Timeless stuff, 4 Canadians and a Cracker reinventing the American songbook. The Band are my favourite band, so I'm gonna agree with you there.
They went down after those 3,became a pop band.Muse - Showbiz, OoS, Absolution. Their best three.
Rush
2112 - A Farewell to Kings - Hemispheres
Only Moving Pictures come close to these three.

Hourly Daily reminds me of the morning Diana died, I was working in a pub where you could see Windsor Castle from the beer garden and was doing a bit of kitchen prep with that cranked up when my boss came in and told me she was dead. I ended up going through Windsor on a boat later that day and the atmosphere was surreal. You Am I

Heaps of love for The Cure in this corner!
I'd go with Seventeen Seconds, Faith, Pornography - which is a well-loved trilogy of albums (chronologically, unlike the Pornography, Disintegration, Bloodflowers 'mood' trilogy).
Also Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, Disintegration, Wish. I love Wish. It doesn't get mentioned nearly enough. It's great. And the other two albums are clearly awesome as well.
I'd love to link Bloodflowers in there, but the eternal disgrace that is Wild Mood Swings gets in its' way.
