I like Trans.

I love the fact that Neil does what he wants and tries new stuff all of the time, but I never enjoyed any of those techno, synth albums. I have even tried going back to them to see if I am missing something, but I don't feel it.

Ain't No More Cane from the Basement Tapes was the first true Band song imo and still one of their best imo, Levon, Rick and Beak all take a verse and meet up on the chorus. Timeless stuff, 4 Canadians and a Cracker reinventing the American songbook.
4% Pantomime is my favourite.

Only Moving Pictures come close to these three.

Both mentioned on the first page, but Pearl Jam's Ten/Vs/Vitalogy and Radiohead's Bends/OK Computer/Kid A would have to be the best for me.

Powderfinger's Internationalist/Odyssey Number 5/Vulture Street is pretty impressive, likewise Arcade Fire's Funeral/Neon Bible/Suburbs.

I eagerly await Gang of Youth's third album because Positions/Go Farther in Lightness is one of the best 1-2 punches I've ever heard.

Hourly Daily reminds me of the morning Diana died, I was working in a pub where you could see Windsor Castle from the beer garden and was doing a bit of kitchen prep with that cranked up when my boss came in and told me she was dead. I ended up going through Windsor on a boat later that day and the atmosphere was surreal.

If he'd lived Gram Parsons would be in this conversation. GP and Grievous Angel are classics, despite his drug use, he had a third great album in him. Especially with Emmylou at his side, their harmonies were to die for.

I'd go with Seventeen Seconds, Faith, Pornography - which is a well-loved trilogy of albums (chronologically, unlike the Pornography, Disintegration, Bloodflowers 'mood' trilogy).

Also Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, Disintegration, Wish. I love Wish. It doesn't get mentioned nearly enough. It's great. And the other two albums are clearly awesome as well.

I'd love to link Bloodflowers in there, but the eternal disgrace that is Wild Mood Swings gets in its' way.

My favorite 4 cure albums are from 85-92. So for me either head on the door or wish could get in.

Bloodflowers is good and wild mood swings was ruined by shitty singles and a ham fisted attempt to make kiss me 2. The darker songs like Want, this is a lie, Jupiter crash, numb, treasure and bare are keepers.

The b side A Pink Dream would of made a much better inclusion to the album and as a single also. Not godawful crap like Mint Car or Gone

The 'Neil Young:Live in Berlin' dvd has all the tracks from 'Trans' played live and they sound much more powerful. Especially 'Sample and Hold' and 'Computer Age'.

Some would include Band Of Gypsys, but its appeal is narrower than the first three.

Deep Purple warrants a mention for In Rock, Fireball and Machine Head (Fireball is fun but not a classic like the other two)

Cream is largely forgotten these days but Fresh Cream, Disraeli Gears and Wheels Of Fire went alright.

The Who - Tommy, Live At Leeds, Who's Next (, Quadrophenia)

Van Morrison - Astral Weeks, Moondance, His Band And The Street Choir (the last good but not a masterpiece like the first two)
