Both goals controversial, but Pepe could and should have held his feet in the first one and he would have been able to clear pretty easily. Harsh penalty, but that's what happens when you create all the play. I wonder if Rafa realises that???

Sigh. Really makes you wonder how we consistently draw in the league with Fulham. And Stoke. And Man City. And...

Well. That's certainly one of the more curious pieces of officialdom I've seens. Mascha booked for Alonso's foul. Certainly makes you nervous for the state of refereeing. Will doubtless be overturned so no probs there but certainly a strange one.

It may have been for kicking the ball to the other side of the pitch or it could have been for stomping (commentators said that anyway).

The commentators seemed to think Masch was booked for kicking the ball away afterwards but it wouldn't surprise me if it was a case of mistaken identity.

Still he needs to shut the f**k up either way. The last thing we want right now is a repeat of him being sent off for mouthing off.

Ah, ok - I saw it live then had to nip off to work. Which meant I missed the third goal, but arrived in time to catch the fourth. Was pretty clinical, actually. And spectacularly embarrassing for Real - Dossena? Seriously? Although his finish was probably the weakest part...

Well... did anyone honestly see that coming?

We're a totally different team in Europe aren't we? (stating the obvious I know) But why can't Rafa get us playing that sort of beautiful attacking football in the premier league?

Barcelona - Check
Chelsea - Check
Juventus - Check
AC Milan - Check
Inter Milan - Check
Real Madrid - Check

Bayern in the Qtrs anyone??

Get the **** in!!!!!!!!!!

Why cant we play like that all the time. We just embarrassed one of the best football teams in the world. Were a different animal in europe. Why cant we do that against Stoke, Fulham, City etc etc

Interesting draw for the quarters with Chelsea, Bayern, Villareal and us already through. I just want to avoid an english team should Arsenal and Utd go through which I expect them to... oh and Barcelona. So ill take any of Villareal, Bayern or the winner of Porto/Atletico please.

They gave us space and were physically inferior. That's why.

Amazing performance though. Best performance in years IMO. First half in particular.

Superb passing, incisive movement, splendid finishing - what a performance! 7m pounds well spent on that wonder Drosseninho. We've been playing him out of position, no wonder his previous performances have been rubbish. Masch suspended for the next game? No problemo just stick Drosscherano next to Xabi

Oh and the rest of the team weren't half bad. :D

Masch's yellow was definitely for kicking the ball away. He just ran through and smashed it into the stands at the other end, or least attempted to. You could see the ref walk and point at him as soon as he did it too.

SBS commentator went on about mistaken identity for 30mins.

You're kidding... Surely?

It was about 1/8th of a second after the whistle was blown.

I think everyone assumed it was a case of mistaken identity because:

1. Alonso's foul deserved a booking; and
2. Mascherano kicked the ball away a split second after the foul.

Whatever the case is, Masch didn't deserve to be booked but of course he can only escape suspension if 1 was the case.

I was waiting for Madrid to score on the counter after our domination early before Torres and Gerrard scored. After all that attacking, I would not have been surprised if Madrid managed to sneak one in, but thankfully Torres and Gerrard capitalised on our domination. That ball from Alonso that resulted in the penalty was sublime.

We were absolutely dominant for the majority of the match, and I thought Babel was great, especially in the second half.

It's obviously between us, United, Chelsea and maybe Barcelona for the trophy.

Couple reasons for that...

1) Depth: That was probably your best side tonight, minus a few characters in what were fairly sidepart roles, such as Insua. Could argue a case for Reira or Benayoun out wide as well. However, its unusual to have all your stars playing, and playing as cohesively as you did.

2) Time: Plenty of time on the ball and room today, even with Diarra working hard though the middle.

3) The occasion: Playing at the Riverside compared to against Real Madrid in a European tie are completely different kettles of fish. Not saying that you werent trying in the Boro game, but yeah... sub-par to say the least.

4) The opposition: The penalty was what knocked the wind out of Real's sails, and from there it was just a cakewalk. Good chance to put on a show really....

About favourtism for the title, Id say the betting would be...

1) Liverpool: Narrowly ahead of Barcelona, but that is only because you guys are already in the last 8. If Barca beat Lyon somewhat well then they are favourites. If you can keep the first team on the park, you guys can most certainly go deep, having previous experience would help too...

2) Barca: Domestic problems through recent weeks are an issue, but they are still a feared side, espcially with the Eto'o, Messi and Henry trident at the front....

3) Chelsea and Man United: Level IMO, Chelsea because while they are getting results, they still dont seem to have "it" within there team, us because we are playing on 75 fronts... Also we still need to get through a tough tie vs Inter Milan, and surely Ibra is due...

The rest I think are pretenders, only Bayern can really threaten, but a lack of support for Ribery in midfield will be their demise IMO. Yeah, they won 12-1 but it was always going to be a rout after 60mins in Portugal. No real impressive results in the group stage, beat a depleted Lyon on matchday 6 but only drew at home when it mattered on matchday 2. A tough domestic battle against Hoffenheim, and Voronin FC will be tough too...

Arsenal will have their midfield run through like jelly, Roma wont beat Arsenal, Villareal are pretenders as will be the winner of Atleti vs Porto. Inter if they get through tonight maybe...
