Virgil's flying under the radar, what a captain, shows up when we need him most all season

I reckon we get another two world class seasons out of the big man.

If Alonso comes I hope he brings Hincapie with him. Transitioning to Quansah, Konate, Hincapie & Jogo long term seems like the way to go once VVD departs around 2026/2027.

I think he easily plays til he's 38, especially if Xabi plays 3 at the back

I was sitting there at half time thinking the only way we’re gonna win this is headers from set pieces.

Up steps Virgil and Mac with the two assists.

I believe.

The 10 players we had out plus Ibo could match the 11 we selected today

Bayern announcing Tuchel leaving end of this season could be the big spanner in the works here

With our style of play I don't see anyone playing to 38, not even a keeper. If he still performs at the very highest level keep him but we also need to be realistic and accept nobody can beat age no matter how much of a terminator they may be.

Only danger for us is Xabi staying at Leverkusen and waiting for the Madrid job. I think he's shrewd enough to stay away from what has been a toxic Bayern environment for a while now, probably since Hansi got the flick. Out of the clubs he played for he probably has the least legacy there and if he wins the league with Leverkusen then there isn't as much aspiration to the Bayern job.

Wouldn't be surprised if Leverkusen put a clause that he can't take players for a period if they release from contract early.

What about taking their medical team? :p

If Xabi takes over then we will do much less running, Xabi loves that possession stuff

Wouldn't need a clause for that. Just refuse to ok any transfer. Doubt that would happen in this case, Bayern are probably going to be selling guys like Hincapie anyway and it'll just come down to who offers the best deal where the player wants to go to.

He does but at the end of the day nobody can beat age.

Plus Xabi (or any other new manager) will want to build their own team. We need some crossover from the Klopp era and that can be keeping Mo/VVD/Robbo/Ali all around until at least 2026.

We also need to be careful about when they move on. Replacing all 4 at once would not be easy.

Was watching something the other day that was saying his Sociedad B team played a lot more like Liverpool so not necessarily set on the team adapting to him as opposed to the other way.

Starting 11 vs the rest.

Kelleher
Bradley Quansah VanDijk Gomez
Macallister Endo Gravenberch
Elliott Gakpo Diaz
Vs
Salah Jota Nunez
Jones Thiago Szobozslai
Robertson Konate Matip AlexanderArnold
Becker

And that's still doesn't have Tsimikas Bajetic or Doak, plus the talented youngsters like Clark McConnell etc.

It's a deep squad, really tested with injuries and illness but if we squeeze out a cup final win over Chelsea and can then get back to a rotation of 18-19 by mid April, we're a genuine shot at trying for 4 trophies again.

(Late Edit, as I was the only Liverpool who’s forgotten we have Nunez!)

And you left out Nunez all together :D

Can someone please explain to me why Liverpool had to play a mid-week Premier League fixture this week (Luton) whilst our League Cup final opponent Chelsea had its mid-week game against Spurs postponed? It's not like Chelsea had to travel outside of London to play Spurs.

I am not into conspiracy theories but it's hard not to think it at times when all this stuff keeps going against us.

Some examples.

A victim of the biggest VAR fk up of all time against Spurs. The dickhead said he couldn't stop the game because it was against the rules notwithstanding that he broke several rules which cost Liverpool significantly. If we lose the league by a point...AGAIN...there will be no ramifications for Darren England. He'll be on holidays whilst we will all be left to rue his incompetence. And the PL will do FA all about it.

Against Arsenal at home they decided to play basketball in the penalty area yet gob-smackingly neither the ref nor VAR saw anything wrong with it and later Webb admitted it should have been a pen. WTF were the ref and VAR thinking?

All the 12.30pm starts. I think it is something like 16 starts from the past 22 12.30pm fixtures or thereabouts. The PL isn't even trying to hide it. The PL say it's the broadcasters but where is the PL's gumption to say to the broadcasters no we need some fairness with this? It seems the more Klopp voices his dissent about it, the more we get that timeslot.

And now this. Why is one League Cup finalist made to play midweek whilst the other has the week off? Something is not right.

And while I'm at it, 14 years on and I still don't even know why Sunderland's beach ball goal against us was allowed to stand (I know it was a Liverpool fan who threw the ball on to the pitch but that shouldn't matter). Imagine that happening today to City or Arsenal? Not in a million years. The ref would have blown his whistle and the goal would not have stood due to obstruction. Yet the flipping ref in the Sunderland game acted as if he didn't see the beach ball.

I could go on. Being made to play a League Cup match 24 hours before playing the opening match of the Club World Cup in 2019. I am not aware of similar happening to Chelsea and City when those two financial doping cheats played in the Club World Cup. Only being allowed to wear the FIFA gold badge in two matches yet unsurprisingly Chelsea was allowed to wear it in all its games because the rules changed. Bunch of flipping knobs, these people.

We have been dicked by the English football fraternity more times than I care to remember.

Again, why does Chelsea have this week off?

Because we are still alive in the FA Cup and Europa and from this point forth will be playing midweek games unless knocked out of those. Chelsea don’t have the same congestion. We also played a “non televised game” in the UK last night due to a clash with UCL matches. This was an anomaly of circumstance the PL would prefer not to do to if not forced…

Yeah basically because we're on for the quaddie, we are gonna be rammed for fixtures and because Chelsea are shit and arent rammed for fixtures they wont end up with midweek games like us.

We want to be in this position, sure we have to play midweek and Chelsea get a full week to prepare but we want this, it means we are in the running for every trophy possible.

Bring on Chelsea on the weekend, I'd love to tuck the League Cup away in the cabinet and then forge on for everything else. Also if we can get that one and we end up short everywhere else, at least it's one more trophy for Klopp before he leaves.

Luton game was brought forward because it was not originally to be broadcast on TV in UK. Chelsea's game this weekend was to be v Tottenham, and that was a TV game, and because this week is a UCL week, broadcast arrangements mean it cannot be on TV up against UCL. So that's why we are playing midweek and Chelsea is not.

Spot on, just lets do it in normal time please.

Unfortunately Chelsea seem to play better against teams in the top 6 this season. They deserve their dross for teams below that mark.

Luckily so much of their team is turned over that the "revenge factor" for the previous two cup finals shouldn't be there

Every win with this injury list and fixture compression feels like a big deal so this would be a landmark win, closing out a competition. Belief is what we have right now so the momentum is critical.
