So now we have a series of judges and judging that really has sweet FA to do with the result

And bidders that remove any reality from it

So now it's just a weird reality program
YEP.
They should start voting some of the renovators off - with the remaining contestants left to pick up the slack!
Or
Be judged on what they can produce from their new kitchens;
Or
Swap the couples to see who can fall in love again;
Or all three of the above at once!

I agree - pointless listening to Shayna crap on about styling/lighting/cushions when old mate comes in and makes a bid on a whim that is $200K above the next best sale price.

LOL. I heard one thing I thought would shake it up. Half way through the series, make them all have to change houses. It is a game, after all.

So the girls went last because Portelli told them he'd give them a show winning bid, eh? I agree with the article, in the sense that what Portelli did was make a joke of the whole show. But The Block has put itself in this position having to rely on the whims of billionaires, rather than building lesser valued homes where the result is dependent on the market. This fact could be the shows downfall unless they have the balls to change things up and renovate/build homes that are more affordable to buy.

Auctioneer Andy Reid said parts of the show lacked authenticity.

“The whole thing felt like a staged drama,” said Mr Reid, an award-winning auctioneer.
“From the moment the reserve was presented in a stuffed penguin to the lack of genuine crowd engagement, it was clear we were watching something scripted rather than an authentic auction.”

if they aim for a lower budget buyer then the wont get in those sweet promotional product placements from high end suppliers.

If they are relying on two rich MF'rs with nothing better to do, to buy the properties above reserve then the whole concept is flawed. surey they need to fix it?
  • change to a raffle/lottery, punters buy tickets for $20 a pop for the house the want, like they do with the RSL Gold Coast home lotteries - house that sells the most tickets wins a bonus.
    • Gross value of ticket sales over $x reserve wins that cash
  • Peoples votes on best house - wins a bonus
  • Judges vote - wins a bonus.
  • Loop in promotions - i.e buy an ass-blaster 2000 from Hardly Normal, and five free raffle tickets

I'm not saying they should build homes that sell for under a million, but maybe where the reserve is $950K and they sell for $1.5 million+

That would open up the market more. They're never going to build affordable housing on this show, but it doesn't have to be super luxury McMansions either.

they can achieve the same amount of prize money over multiple smaller (or 'tiny house') builds, which would open up the market as well. less surface area to paint per reveal or whatever the hell they might call it. downside could be tiny homes lend themselves to more boutique fixtures and interiors which might be at odds with their corporate overlords. bit hard to fit 3 ovens in a shipping container.

multiple tiny home builds would allow different geographical locations across a series. as well as people able to jump ship after tantrums without affecting too much - seems this is now important to factor in.

The Block - Caravan

How about take the auction element out of it entirely.

Have rooms decided each week by a combination of judges and audience voting. Something like that, with set prize money.

I’m kind of sick of people making a mill plus for twelve weeks work, it’s a bit gross.

Especially when this season they were mostly unlikeable

And to think I purchased my ass-blaster 2000 without any raffle tix - I feel gyped!

Close the thread

Actually better still
Get a 2 litre tin of fuel
Set thread in fire
Get the ashes
Place the ashes in acid
Thread gone forever
Get over yourself. If people still want to discuss the show, then that's their prerogative. If you don't like it, then how about you go away? No one's forcing you to read this thread.

Why did Portelli outbid his own Buyers Advocate (and thus himself) to win the boy's home? That was odd.

He had form with this, did it to himself last year

I'd say he was hoping to keep the charade up - if by house 3 he had swooped in at the last bid to buy them, who'd give a toss about bidding in the final two auctions?

I wonder if in 10 years, this “compound” will look like the Athens Olympics venues.

The communal pool half full of stagnant green water with dog shit floating in it, tennis court overgrown with weeds, graffiti everywhere.

The interesting trade off, if you were to take the whole compound as the win instead of the cash, is that by owning it all you would effectively have no body corporate. Fantastic, from a cash flow perspective, but then whomever owns the compound is 100% responsible for its maintenance & upkeep.
