Something that I haven't seen much discussion about are the bye rounds and it's understandable given they are 3 months away. However there are a couple of really important things people should be considering.

Firstly: Gold Coast and Port Adelaide have their bye in round 9 after the game in China. As a result premiums from these teams should not, without much consideration, be picked. That said they are worth their weight in gold after round 9 as they will play all 3 major bye rounds

Secondly: As a secondary result of the GC PA round 9 bye the round 12 bye only comprises of 4 teams; Geelong, WCE, North Melbourne and Richmond. This means there will be less impact on your team in rounds 12.

Thirdly: As an example say by round 11 you have 20 premiums in your team. Currently of the top 20 most popular premiums only Dangerfield and Dustin Martin will play both rounds 11 and 13. In other words over rounds 11 and 13 you would have an average of 9 premiums scoring 0. As a result the value of rounds 12 bye premiums is significantly increased. Outside of the 2 already named options are slim.

For your consideration: J. Selwood, T. Goldstein, M. Priddis, S. Mitchell, A. Gaff, L. Shuey, T. Cotchin

I personally have locked in Gaff; priced at 93.5 he averaged 105 in 2015, and removing his injury affected month averaged 100 in 2016, he had a strong showing in JLT4 and will be the recipient of plenty of +6s thanks to S. Mitchell's recruitment. I see him averaging the 105 again whilst gaining $70k value and being a vital part of my team in rounds 11 and 13.

Nice summary.

There's going to be a LOT of weak teams in rounds 11 & 13 and I can't wait!

It's definitely something to keep an eye on while structuring your side, and factor in as you've rightfully mentioned when picking premiums as ideally these guys will fill your side for the entirety of the year.

currently my teams byes are looking pretty good.
2 missing in round 9 (both rookies: SPP, Eddy)
10 missing in round 11(3 of them rookies)
8 missing in round 12 (6 of them rookies)
10 missing in round 13 (3 of them rookies)

This will change a fair bit throughout the season obviously but I don't think the byes will be as daunting as people think. Especially if you focus on getting some Gold Coast and Port premos in after the china game (Gaz, Wines, Gray, Miller etc)

I'm not so worried about the byes this year.

1. Only the top 18 scores are counted during these rounds.

2. They've given us 3 trades per bye round. This is up from 2 in previous years.

3. The byes are spread out over 4 rounds, not 3.

4. There's no bye in round 10, giving you 5 trades between the first and second bye to fix your team.

I managed to get through the byes fine last year, can only see it being easier this time around.

I do like the upgrade to 3 trades per bye week. Especially given some leagues play through this period, and sure it still becomes a factor but it won't cripple teams like it has done in years past.

The trades should be used to make your team better, not sideways trading to prevent donuts.

Also, there's only 2 trades in rd 9 as it's a regular round for scoring, not best 18.

wtf, really?

wtf, really?

Yup. I was surprised, too. This is from the game guidelines:

2. 2017 KEY FEATURES AND CHANGES
    • This year you will receive an extra trade for bye rounds 11, 12 & 13. However, in Round 9 when only two teams (Gold Coast & Port Adelaide) have the bye you will only receive 2 trades as you would a regular week.

Yeah gotta agree with this. Every year I'm around the 3k mark before the byes and end up in the top 1k after the byes. 3 trades a week is a real stuff up for the dedicated coaches (like me) who plan for the byes even before the season has started. Gives the rookies more of a chance to catch up. Do not like it all.

Need to figure out a strategy how to use this to my advantage tho

Tbh if you wanted to be rewarded for being a truly dedicated coach you'd be playing supercoach but I can't talk, I've been obsessing over Fantasy for a month+ now and don't have a SC team

Yeah this is my reasoning as well. I like being prepared for the bye rounds when others aren't, 3 trades each alleviates a bit of the gap.

Personally I love all fantasy games so play all formats of the game. This is a part of fantasy I don't like.
I guess the reason i prefer the AFL fantasy is the forgiving nature and number of trades, really allows you to get closes the the best possible 22 by seasons end

I think a lot of teams will end up using the extra trade to sideways trade their way through the byes whereas canny players will be planning for the byes and using the third trade to bank some cash for upgrades (as long as you're not fielding donuts that is!).

My forward line is a massive headache in regards to bye structure.

Macrae and Dahl are locked for me. Non-negotiable. I would actually like Roo (despite his price) but he shares the same Rd 11 bye. Is having 3 premos out in one bye too many?

Same deal with Steele. I probably would have made room for him in my team if it weren't for his bye round.

the bye rounds destroyed my team last year although was my first time playing so didn't understand it but this time have been shuffling players in and out depending on if i have enough coverage for bye rounds i do not want to drop in rankings again but so far have too many round 11 premos and must need to cut back but depends on rookies named

Just confirming this week is just a normal scoring round we only receive the scores of our 18 highest scoring on field players across round 11,12 &13 is that correct?
yes - from the rules

  • There will be two Rounds (11 & 13) in 2017 where six AFL teams will have a Bye and one round (12) where 4 AFL teams will have a Bye in each Round in these rounds every user will receive 1 extra trade for a total of 3 trades for the round.
  • During these Rounds you select your starting Team of 22 as normal, but only your best 18 Players will score.
  • The Round 9 Bye for the Gold Coast Suns & Port Adelaide will be treated as a regular round, meaning everyone will receive 2 trades and 22 scoring players.

Thank you sir!

Are there extra trades during bye rounds? I have 33 trades left or something and that doesnt seem right with the amount of weeks left.

Also whats the go with this round. Is it bue rules.. i.e top 18 scorers or what?

If you read the thread or the Rules on the fantasy site you'd know that it's 3 trades in Rounds 11,12,13. No change in rules for Round 9.
