Police say a 17-year-old boy was briefly abducted in the beachside Adelaide suburb of Somerton Park last night.

Key points:

  • A 17-year-old boy was pushed into a car after walking along the Esplanade at Somerton Park
  • He jumped out of the car and ran away in Glenelg
  • The motives for the crime are unknown

According to police, the teenager was walking along the Esplanade near Yarrum Grove when a white sedan containing four men stopped alongside him at 10pm.
The teenager, who was walking home after going out with friends in nearby Glenelg, was repeatedly asked if he wanted a lift and he declined several times.
Two of the men then got out of the rear of the vehicle and "forcibly pushed" the teenager into the back seat.
The car then drove for about two minutes before getting stuck in traffic at the roundabout at the corner of Partridge Street and Pier Street in nearby Glenelg.
The teenager managed to jump out of the car and run home, before alerting police.

Detective Inspector Kieran Baggoley says the motives are unknown. (ABC News)
None of the men spoke to the boy while he was in the car.
"The motives of this incident are not currently known," Detective Inspector Kieran Baggoley said.
He described one of the men as in his late 30s to early 40s, with a solid build, 190 centimetres tall and with a dark but greying beard.
He was wearing a dark grey hoodie.
A second man was in his 30s, with a muscular build, about 180cm tall and wearing an orange T-shirt and white beanie.
All four men were described as Caucasian.
Inspector Baggoley urged any witnesses to come forward, including with dashcam or CCTV from the area, which would have been busy with visitors to the beach on Australia Day.
"We are treating this as a genuine abduction and we will continue to investigate it as such," he said.
The boy was not injured and no weapons were involved in the abduction.

Jules was a funny place. Centre of SA's nightlife in the middle of our King's Cross (Hindley St).

One of the many places with a 'Polites' sign above it if I remember correctly. I was under-age but a bunch of us managed to get in when I was maybe 16 or so. I think 'Jules' was underground and there was another bar upstairs on the ground floor.

Main thing I can remember is that the DJs were from 5EBI-FM which was the 'ethnic' radio station who had a disco/dance music show on a (maybe) Wednesday night.

Didn't go there too many times and doubt I ever saw a drag-queen there. Judging by the crowds that I remember, they would've been bashed.

One of the queens who might have gone there more than a few times was Julie Barnes who was a tall, stunning blonde who avoided the gay scene and was pretty much impossible to identify as someone born a male.

Wasn't the Black Rose previously 'Fiddler's'? Or was that a little further away?

Maybe that's why I thought the disco part was 'underground' - just downstairs.
Unsure. Dont recall Fiddlers. I preferred more pub style places ie Norfolk tavern , Duke of York , Emu, Charles Sturt Tavern etc.

Jules, Rio were late night need a beer venues for us

Glen Stewart, and his mate's Mini, disappeared in the early hours of 19th February 1977 (weirdly enough, on the same day that Chris Worrell of the Truro murders was to die). Like with the Truro girls, the ‘running away’ story seemed to be what the police initially accepted. Unlike the Truro girls, no-one has walked into a police station with a confession and no sign of him has been found. The journalist Nigel Hunt periodically keeps him on the public radar (thank you, Nigel).

The suggestion of him using Adelaide University as a stopping point is interesting and fits the general direction of travel home from Grange.

The only issue I have - in linking this to BVE and co- is the missing Mini

I also have a question on why his flatmate chose to stay - its not like the party was around the corner and the flatmate could find his way in a few minutes.

It seems odd to miss an opportunity to get home - no matter how good the party is

One does feel, in common with a number of cases over the next couple of years, that a more immediate and sceptical focus on those nearest the deceased/disappeared could have proven fruitful.

Another example of the police dodging away from anything with homosexual links, or social attitudes ensuring those who might have known something helpful kept quiet??

We lived in the area at the time and heard his mate didn't want a lift because Glen was drunk. Only heresay though. I'm always baffled as to why this case was never connected to BVE and friends. His planned Uni stop-off for smokes is a bit odd. The airport servo was open all hours in those days and could've taken him home in a straight line. I believe he met someone near the Uni or picked up a hiker. The rest was probably history. His mini could easily have been stored in someone's shed and left to rot. I don't think any of BVE's boys would have been mechanically savvy enough to change engine numbers etc.

Does anyone know why Glen's disappearance was never linked when it ticks so many boxes?

In terms of a public link, my guess is because the prosecution focus on BVE was to build a case that he was picking up, drugging, and murdering straight teenagers. Glen didn't fit that story.

Found this recently and I don’t believe I’ve seen it posted in here previously. It's Australia’s Most Wanted’s first original segment from 1988, entitled: “Lock Up Your Sons”. It starts at 41.05.

There's no real new revelationary information in it, but it provides a dramatization of Mark Langley's abduction and in particular the trans girls' alleged involvement.

Thoughts?

There's a newspaper report from late 1987 that says Grundy were making two segments for a program called 'Wanted', to be screened in early 1988: one on Mark Langley and one on Glen Stewart. Has anyone ever seen the one on Glen Stewart?

On his time of death error/s and how Manock arrived at them.

Will be interesting to see if last night's program does prompt any revisiting of past cases where all legal avenues had previously been exhausted, such as Frits Van Beelen:

Manock did the toxicology report on Alan’s autopsy and assisted Ahern . James assisted as well in Alan’s autopsy .

Hi John,

Do you remember what Alan's stomach contents were and what he last ate?

If anybody else can point me to the same information for Richard Kelvin, it would be appreciated. From memory it was weetbix or similar, indicating a breakfast. I wonder what his last breakfast was at home.

I'm fairly sure Alan's last known meal was eggs on toast at his mate's place late morning or early afternoon, before his hitch-hiking and subsequent disappearance. I can't recall reading any autopsy reports of his stomach contents. Knowing this would be very interesting indeed.

This is information I probably won't ever really need but I did some research on digestive processes after sedation and it can slow down to days so what might normally be fully digested in a couple of hours, can sit for much longer under sedation.

Is this why you have questions or doubts as to the time RK was held? Me too.
