The AFLW comes out of this very comprehensive report well!
The one thing it cannot predict is what post Covid really will look like for all the football codes in Australia but what it does show is that Soccer and Rugby Union are in a spiralling world of pain!

This was rather well balanced.

Yes, it seems to be but there are certain issues.

First of all, it's a survey and the value of a survey depends on the depth and the questions.
I don't get "passion". IMO there is only one passionate supporter and that is one who attends games.
Attendances don't line up with passion at all.

I had a quick flip through and i didn't see any references to the most important issue in sport - onfield performance.
On field performance magnifies all the background issues.
The Storm is solid because it is a perennial grand finalist.
The Dockers would be a lot larger with some silverware.
No where is onfield success more apparent than with the Lions.
Then we have the Suns and the Giants.

So what is the outcome of a 17 team competition with an extra Brisbane ?
Well it's a gamble - it's as simple as that.
A 17 team NRL remains at 8 weekly games - no revenue increase there and higher cost base.
A long season brings in the law of diminishing returns - more revenue at a lesser rate.
In the simplest of terms a successful new Brisbane side will produce a positive result
but if the new side languishes for any lengthy period then there will be a nett negative to the league.

Just joined this forum great teacher. It will be interesting to see how this develops from here. I haven't gone back into the thread. As a PE teacher of some decades I think you are right around passion. RL supporters are strong but absolutely flogged by AFL peeps. However, having taught north of the tropics, you have to hear the difference in passion of suburbs by walking around when a big RL game is on. It's striking and som ething I guess is more akin to AFL down south. I am a bit like you though as I look for clarity in questions that lead to 'numbers'... Looking forward to living long enough to see what happens.

It is interesting that the NRL is targeting 20 teams by 2032.

The aim is a PNG/Cairns team funded by pacific sport Australia. Just like the government funds the Fijian Drua in super rugby with foreign add money.

Another team in Brisbane and a team in Perth.

I think the Perth team is the weakest prospect. Obviously WA has a strong Aussie Rules following. Plus they have the Force in super rugby, while super rugby isn’t travelling well the Force are owned by Australia’s second richest man and there seems to be a significant amount of community investment to try and grow the franchise.

Weakest prospect perhaps - the profile of the NRL over here at the moment is pretty much zero. From memory last year there was the grand total of 16 mens teams across Perth and Mandurah. As a comparison, there were 37 ice hockey teams across the same area. Ice Hockey. More people in a rugby league team, but you get the drift. The last time I heard anyone talk about the sport was when State of Origin came to town, and I can't remember the last time I heard anyone talking about NRL. So yes, the immediate prospects are bleak.

BUT if the NRL are prepared to put the investment in, and by that I mean decades long, the rewards are there. Most people outside WA have no idea how much money is floating around Perth. It's huge, there's cash everywhere. If you can increase its popularity, you will have people spending big on memberships, sponsorships, corporate boxes etc. But Perth people can be fickle, as just about every non-AFL sporting team knows.

The variable is the NRL's level of commitment. It appears that they simply don't have the fortitude to make that long term commitment.
