In fairness to the reigning poster of the year I think in a very literal sense debunking doesn’t include convincing anyone, but in a practical sense it kinda has to otherwise why bother making the attempt?

Putting forward a well reasoned/researched argument is probably sufficient in an academic setting where people are debating largely in good faith but in the realm of conspiracy theories and woo where people are making that shit part of their identity the process of convincing is a major battle.
Because if you don't present the other side then shit becomes a conspiracy fuelled echo chamber.

For example I recently read a post on Facebook claiming the LA Wildfires were set to clear land for California's high speed rail project. Somebody debunked the shit out of the theory, they didn't convince the OP they were wrong (shock) but they demonstrated quite comprehensively why they were wrong.

Which means if someone with 0 knowledge reads the post, they'll now see both sides to make their judgement as opposed to just one.

wow you convinced me.

And some people say bigfooty is an echo chamber!

Unless the OP is so popular that the factual one fades into obscurity and isn't easily seen. Which seems to happen a lot, sadly.

Well yeah that's why all the threads I create just result in people slapping me on the back.

BrunoV what's your take on Musk's "salute"?
Nobody asking for it, but I’ll give you mine anyway.

I can’t figure out which is more idiotic….people who want to try and pretend that Musk is actually a Nazi or Musk for choosing to make a gesture (he could have done it so many other ways) that was clearly going to be interpreted this way by those who want to do so.

From what I've seen, the majority of commentary isn't about this. It's about him doing (or not doing) a fascist (aka Roman aka Nazi aka Hitler) salute, which is associated with far-right (not just Nazi) groups.

I’m currently reading “Character Limit: How Elon Musk Destroyed Twitter”. It’s a wild read. Dude is legit an egomaniac. I know it’s written with that slant on it, but even if half of it is true, it’s beyond belief.

Nazis were a subset of fascism which is a political ideology with a suite of social, economic etc policies which defines the movement. I guess it’s the racist elements of fascism (the nazis in particular) that sticks in peoples minds when they start labelling people. Musk is unquestionably a racist but he’s probably not a fascist in the technical sense.

I’m not going to argue he’s a good person, he’s a mystery to me at this point, but I see no evidence of him being far right, fascist, nazi or whatever. It’s confected outrage.

Offers financial support to a bunch of far right political parties, promotes the great replacement theory, let a bunch of out and proud neo nazis back onto his social media site, championing the cause of various right wing assholes like Tommy Robinson, various right wing dog whistles over the past few years culminating in his salute the other day… there’s probably more but that’s just off the top of my head

he also let a notorious pedophile (who happened to be a conservative) back onto twitter which hints at his priorities

I’m not going to try and argue each of these.

At core I suspect that what I see as valid conservative, right wing politics (some of which I agree with but not all) you probably see as far right and fascist.

Just do some reasearch.

Openly anti-Islam. is that valid conservative politics?
