Sadly I don't have much in the way of leave entitlements left.

I had three interviews on Thursday so used sick leave when I'd lined them all up.

Unfortunately today the boss quite aggressively told staff he'd been too lenient - either you're working in the office 9 to 5 or you're having the day off (I am by no means the only person trying to get out).

I am getting a fair few interviews, obviously, so am considering just letting myself be unemployed in the (likely) assumption I'll find something quickly. Very concerned about what would happen if it backfires, though, and I'm jobless for a couple of months, which I can't really afford.
I quit a job recently with nothing lined up as I get interviews really easy too. Been 2 weeks and starting to worry a little but i can afford a few months at least, probably 7-8 if need be.

You can't go to a toxic workplace daily. Your happiness is more important. By the sounds of things you'd be better off leaving asap. Maybe next interview you feel really good walking out of is the catalyst? A risk but probably worth it for your own wellbeing

I know people who have done this with good and bad eventual outcomes, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

The thought of potentially burning a chunk of savings if it took me a while to find another gig, but I guess it depends what sort of role you have and how in demand/ quick it is to start a new gig.

I think above that it depends how unhappy you are at your current job. If you can put up with it, continue the search while getting paid. If you're truly miserable monday-friday it might be a different story...

I had an interview Tuesday that I tried to do from the breakout room at work and think it went appallingly. I chose a time most staff were meant to be in a meeting but it got cancelled, so I became hyper aware of my volume and was anxious the whole way through. Confirmed to me I couldn’t do interviews in the office.

Had another at lunch today and walked to a nearby park. It went okay.

I heard from my junior that I manage that the CEO had complained to her about me, as I’ve used having a real estate or electrician coming over as an excuse to work from home. He complained that he knows I have housemates so why is it always my, and therefore his, problem.

(My housemates work in hospitality, I would happily tell him if he raised it with me and wanted to be professional.)

Just bizarre stuff.

Teams interviews are never as good as in person. I always push to meet in person and shake hands, plus you don't need to worry about volume that way either. I'd follow that up with an email to the interview chair explaining if you came across as nervous, that's why. Just worried about volume as you didn't want colleagues to know you looking elsewhere yet

Definitely try and do them in person though imo. Much more natural

I had an interview today. Quite a senior BA/Project Manager role and the interview was only 3 questions, none related to the systems they want to upgrade, and one of the 3 questions was about aboriginal cultural sensitivity. I get that matters to companies now but to base 33% of your interview on it feels like a real waste and costs yourselves as employers valuable time in gauging what candidates can do for you. Truly odd imo. No idea what to make of that tbh, if they're so focused on that and not the actual work going on, will it be a good place to work? No idea what will come of it, hope I get it still as I'm not working atm

If you're unsuccessful in your interview, push for feedback on why (should always do this anyway). If it only relates to nervousness and the like then you know you're on the right track! Good luck

I've heard you actually do not have to give a specific excuse any way to your employer. It's either sick, carers, compassionate, etc leave and that's it. It's none of their business as to what the actual detail of it is, is.
Yup
That's why on a cert the Dr never puts down the reason

I use UpDoc if I need a cert now
Never had a prob even got a week off when had influenza

Bloody hard to get in too!
Was crook at start of the year and saw I could get in on the Tues at the clinic (it was Monday when I was looking at all appointments online)
Then the Mrs informed me it was the following Tues lol

They won't backdate a whole week lol

Most def a godsend, this online stuff tbh

Not sure where to ask this and I don't want to start a new thread.

Having a break in your work history frown upon in Australia? Reading Americans experience saying that it's hard to get back into the work force if you have gaps of not working.

Reason I'm asking, I've accepted a voluntary redundancy an wouldn't mind taking an extending break.

Will post more in the golden handshake thread once it's all finalised.

Not at all, but depends how long you mean by break? E.g. a 3-6 month - 1 year break is very different to not working for 5+ years.

Career breaks are very common, particularly between roles. They're also incredibly easy to explain to new employers, and are often seen as benefits, e.g this guy has just had a period to destress, recharge, travel, etc, they're unlikely to need to do that again in the short term future for extended periods.

I'm saving up to take one at some time in the next 2 years.

You don't even have to actually go to the doctor's anymore. Get a cert off the internet for $25 you're golden.

Could take the entire week off for interviews if you wanted to.

You can also get certificates from pharmacies as well now.

I don't hate my job persay

I'm just in the worst rut of my life and have no idea what I want to do.

I would love to go back and do an apprenticeship but at 32 I can't afford to lose so much money to go back and work for 20 dollars an hour.

If you have time, maybe you could look at online courses? I know it’s a different thing, but maybe you could find a course that suits your needs?

I totally agree with this. Working for a company that feels toxic is draining. It’s not worth the stress or the drama that comes with it.

At the moment the company I work for feels toxic, and I have no interest in being there. So have spent today applying for other positions elsewhere.

The company I work for is going to be in trouble as they will have extreme difficulty in filling my role. From my point of view they made their bed, now they have to lie in it.

I'm currently going through the guilt of applying for new jobs, I have an interview lined up but not sure I want to pursue.

I dont love my job but it's not completely awful, I just know it's not a long term place for me. I've been there 10 months only though, I kind of feel it might be better to at least hit a 1 year milestone which I feel is a lot more respectable on the resume and to the employer, both current and potential future.

Unless you have a history of job-hopping no employer is going to hold a short stint against you, sometimes jobs don’t work out and it’s nobody’s fault

Just say it was a short term contract if you're worried about that. Have a reference you trust back that up. 99% of employers wont care anyway.

I've done shitloads of recruitment for entry to senior roles and unless there's heaps of 3 month stints over a long period it wont raise eyebrows you have 1 short stay. It's fine

I ended up finding a job back in the public service which is were I've spent most of my working life so I'm back in my element.

I can't believe how much life looks brighter when you're happy at work again.

That’s awesome news. Hope everything works out alright

Joined a mob who 'hot desks' last week. This drives me mad, we have to pack up every night only to set back up in the same seat tomorrow...

trying to be trendy for the sake of it. Just give me my own desk ffs

That said, way more relaxed than the place i left recently. People don't appear stressed or working 11+ hour days daily. Everyone speaks positively about working here so good signs.
