Viking Village update from yesterday. Really enjoyed building the little bits and bobs here like the throne and the rotisserie, build is coming along nicely with a fair chunk more to go.

Also I know they're not the most popular series but a few new Mario sets were revealed today, the Haunted Mansion is a cute little build that looks like it would fit well in a town build. Plus, Mario Kart announced for next year which is awesome.
I'm a sucker for Lego trains (with the notable exception of Thomas the Orient Express) so the Bowser's Express looks like a winner. Geez they're getting expensive though, will wait for a discount I think.

Very pleased I have the Viking Village. Build looks great.

Rubbish toy fair in the Melbourne suburb of Reservoir this morning. Way too much bullshit there, it was way too hot, there were way too many people, and there was nothing I wanted to buy. There was only one dedicated Lego stall - they had a Voltron at $650, but the guy wouldn't come off the price, I might've bought it at $575 - they didn't have anything else that we'd discussed earlier in the week.

Other than that, there were Star Wars or Disney stalls that had some associated lego, but it was a very disappointing fair from someone who was looking for 1) lego, 2) old mint in box wrestling figures, and 3) wrestling cards (which I only ever buy when I go to a toy fair and can't find anything else to buy, but I couldn't even find them today!)

It's set up to spend a good 2-3 hours there, sifting through boxes and card folders, but it's just impossible in heat like today. I felt bad for the crazy cosplayers dressed up in oven-wear.
Cheapest new Voltron on bricklink is $450 plus shipping. You did well to pass up at that price.

Oh and of course I shouldn't forget to mention for the millionth time that Lion Knights Castle is the only 10/10 set I rated in this thread. Works amazingly as display or play. Great building techniques. Loads of minifigs.

Perfection. And NO STICKERS!

I knew I shouldn't have worried, a couple of bags later and the drawbridge is all attached properly.

I did mess up the portcullis initially (the quick release mechanism part) but a quick look on YouTube and I realised I had shoved something up the wrong hole (I know what I did there) but was able to rectify that. Makes a nice sound being wound up and then released I must say!

Two bags to go. Well, technically three but two of them have the same number.

Museum is finished. Bags 25-32 build the roof and the final bag 33 has external decorations (a tree, bench, post box and the signature modular light post). The roof was probably the most interesting part of the building to build, the curator's office in the middle is well done (and very cluttered, as you'd probably expect). No access to this room from inside the building, the poor curator has to use a roof door and walk along an unprotected roof eave to reach his office.

Would I recommend the set? In my view, Lego's kinda raised the bar recently with its pricing changes. Assembly Square, which was a similarly sized model in both footprint and piece count, was $50 cheaper, and readily available at a discount. It was worth its cost - the Museum, I'm not so sure. Sure, it's much better value than Orient Express (which has 1,400 fewer pieces and is $20 more expensive), but the build experience was nothing on Ninjago City Markets ($100 dearer, 2,000 more pieces).

I'd say if you're into the modulars it's a very polished (if slightly routine) build and you won't regret your purchase. It's green-ness may put you off but it actually looks OK when lined up with other modulars. This is the first modular I've bought for a few years, the last couple haven't really appealed. If you're new to modulars, or are looking at buildings for a display or your Lego city, I think I'd recommend the Boutique Hotel instead (still available at RRP $350 for 3,000 pieces).

Overall I don't think the set is as good as Assembly Square, it's most direct "competitor". If you're hankering for a 32x48 modular I'd buy that in preference. Although it was released back in 2017, it's only just been retired, so you may be able to find it in some stores.

Oh yeah I love that effect. You can hear the gears clacking as you raise it then the shudder as it drops with the quick release. Genius.

Hopefully later this week I get the Medieval Town Square and I can assemble it for the Lego aficionados in this thread.

Going through my pics from the fair today, also of interest was the Simpsons House… but they had $775 on it, so I didn’t even really register it to memory!

Down to final book and final few bags of Batcave, looking good. Been a few close calls of me knocking bits off and having to do running repairs either by going back to instructions or just figuring it out.

Best fun was when I had something around the wrong way that was needed for a later piece and had to try and get to it without pulling the whole thing apart…

Anyway feeling like more torture, anyone done the Batwing? Looks alright and a few available on EBay. Might do the Tumbler one day as well, but that’s probably down the track.

Also, do Lego or bricks megastore ever do big sales around Easter time?

They had both these sets at the toy fair today. I considered the Tumbler, it certainly fits within the car aesthetic. I'm not that keen to pay scalper prices unless it's something I really want though, Voltron is still the only set I'm likely to do that for if I can ever get it for sub-$500.

The Tumbler is still available though, so you can get it for normal price. It’s something I would get if Bricks or Lego have a sale on it.

But agreed on scalper prices, I was reluctant to pay for the Batcave on eBay so was glad when it came back in stock in store. Found a Batwing for only $50 above store prices on eBay so that’s my best option atm if it is any good.

I'd forgotten that one. Both it and the Kwik-e-Mart are awesome sets, with lots of details from the earlier Simpsons' series. Great Minifigures. That's a rich price though.

Not in my experience, no. Big W and Target usually do a 20% off sale in the school holidays, so keep an eye out for that. Lego and the Certified Stores may have double points and/or GWP and the stores often have "flash" offers. It's worth subscribing to their emails for those.

Those minifigs are fun.

By the way, Australia Post were great. Frequent updates, easy to use website, and extremely easy to give instructions for delivery. Also on time, of course - I can deal with 5-10 business days as long as you actually tell me the specific date when I order, and stick to it.

Hopefully Lego don't decide to change back to Toll.

Would you believe the tiny plastic bag in the centre is possibly the hardest one to obtain? But Maple is just so damn cute 🥺

This may be my weekend build for some life around my castle.
Love the Animal Crossing figures, well done for getting Maple as well. I think Medieval Village might be my birthday request after I saw it built at the store.

Had to be a bit savvy to balance saving money from Big W and KMart while also having enough from Lego.com to trigger the GWP.

I suspect it might be one of those white whales down the track but I'm assembling it anyway, f*** keeping it in the bag.

Kinda wish I'd bought two Voltrons back in the day though. Could almost fund the hobby if you buy two every time. One to build and one to sell.
Yeah, but this is easy in hindsight. Not every set does well, you have to store them for years in pristine condition, have a "storefront" and run the risk of Lego re-releasing them.

I took the view that any investments would be in more traditional forms and I'd just keep Lego as a hobby. Didn't want to be worrying about the value of everything and becoming a trader.

Yeah that's true. I'm the same (just with that niggling sense of damn haha)

Finished the Lion Knight's Castle today. Awesome build. Can't wait to display it properly. Need more shelving. Got a bunch on display, but now a few just kinda sitting there: Lion Knight's Castle and the NES, plus my wife has the Disney Castle assembled (the original one before they re-released it), and will be unwrapping Stitch on Saturday.

I must say I'm really keen on the upcoming Batman: The Animated Series one:

Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City™ 76271 | Batman™ | Buy online at the Official LEGO® Shop AU

Would look amazing up on the wall in my home theatre. $500 though :(

Out of my collection, hard to split Voltron and the Lion Knight's Castle as my favourites. Mario Cube and NES are both excellent too. Love Stranger Things, but as I've mentioned before, rebuilding it when it broke apart when I tried to connect it all together was so frustrating. Ecto-1 was the one that got me back into Lego as an adult (21108, so not the big one (10274)).

Most disappointing was Optimus Prime.
