Managed to get the City Tram from Big W in their current sale. $57 (after extra 10%) for a $150 set isn't too shabby. Might try and "winterise" it for the village.

Also ordered the Technic Volvo truck thingy as they had that on a good special too. I love building those.

Much as I'd love Botanic Gardens I think Endurance will be on my Christmas wish list instead.

getting near end, started on the stern and that has been the most difficult part of the build so far

Looking back through recent pages, I realised I hadn't finished my Mario & Yoshi build review. Apologies for that. Rather than rehash this, have a look at the new review on Jay's Brick Blog that captures this well.

It's one of those "make you smile" builds. Not difficult but rewarding, and just enough Technic to satisfy those of us who like seeing the mechanisms and how they work. The animation is very smooth. It looks better from a distance than it does up close, but that's the whole point ;). It's bigger than I expected (40cm tall) so take note of the dimensions before purchase :).

It is left uncovered at the back so can only be displayed against a backdrop. It would have been possible to enclose it but that would have added prohibitively to the cost, and it is cool to see how it works. It's also somewhat daunting for a colour-challenged builder like myself. Multiple mistakes in this vein were made, despite clear mapped diagrams (like the Art sets) for those steps. Like several recent sets there seems to be an absolute deluge of (still plastic sadly) numbered bags - 15 in this case, most with an enclosed smaller bag.

There is a (slightly) hidden action tag that works with any of the Super Mario action figures, producing music and animation as you turn the crank. Not a game-changer, but certainly adds to the charm of the set.

I love it. Not too expensive (and now available discounted), a different build experience and a display piece that is a joy. I have far more Mario sets than I ever thought I would buy, and every one of them is just so much fun. It must be a real hoot to work in that division of Lego.

I am now really hanging out for the Mario Kart sets which look awesome. Sadly not available until January so I can't add them to the Christmas list.

Also, should just add some comments on the storage front. Have run out of room in the designated Lego room (which is in reality the workshop off the garage) and need to store sets in the storeroom. So I could keep them orderly I used Ikea TROFAST racks with tubs. The basic white rack is $79, large tubs $5 and lids $3. Each rack holds 5 large tubs, so that's $119 for a complete rack, which I though was reasonable and not too much of a dent in the Lego budget. The tubs sit on runners and are easy to remove and open. I just number them and keep track of which sets are in which tubs.

The Certified Stores have the Wreath and Poinsettia available together for $200 today and tomorrow. That's $70 off RRP (IMHO the Wreath in particular is overpriced, and is already available at a discount). Not a bad deal if you want both of these. Sadly I've already acquired the Wreath in a recent sale, so doesn't make sense for me. The Poinsettia does look good built though.

its big and heavy, our table is 1.5m wide, so it gives you some size comparison, thoroughly enjoyed the build, it was challenging, but not too difficult, building the hull was a bit repetitive though, wasn't a fan of the printed instructions, this build needed 3d instructions
