The F1 sets are all available for pre-order, but there's no incentive to do it and pay full price.

People (rightfully) being critical of the Technic sets increasing in price from $300 to $350... but that's "only" an increase of about 17%.

No one is talking about the Mansell at $130, a $40 increase on the Senna RRP of 90 bucks, an increase of more than 40%.

Goddamn that's gross. I don't see it being as popular as the Senna one though, there's no need for it to be a day 1 buy.

No offence to Mansell fans, but I found it amusing that he gets the next treatment after Senna, and ahead of probably a dozen others (at a minimum) legendary drivers and their cars.

I very rarely buy Technic on Day 1, even for desirable sets. For sets that aren't "exclusive" to Lego.com or the Stores, they will generally be available at around 30% off at some time in their life. I bought both existing F1 cars for less than $200, I think from either amazon or Big W. I may get one or both of the new ones, but again will look for prices close to $200. If they don't get that low, then no big loss.

I suspect the Mansell set will be the same. I paid $72 for Senna and I think i've seen it cheaper than that since. If you're not absolutely sold on having it straight away, I'd wait. I've never pre-ordered anything (except for BDP, where it is the only way to buy). I guess I'd be tempted if there was (for example) a desirable GWP or some such with a pre-order.

6 bags in now, so half way through.

Man these are fun builds. I'd build so many un-detailed Speed Champions cars since I'd last built a technic car. Watching the individual details come together of the drive train, the wishbones, the rear wing, and today the engine is enormously good fun.

I'm glad i built this now to remind myself what a fun build it is ahead of the March releases. Although not fun enough to pay $350 when I know it'll be available cheaper... Next is probably going to endurance if I can find some space (and if the pieces for the Friends Apartments haven't arrived.)

This is with the baby on the left. On the right is a recent panda polybag, a cardinal with bamboo at the front and the bamboo from the Japanese garden next to the large panda. What do you all think? I would say get the panda family but skip the bamboo botanical. 20250113_211447.jpg

Have you built the Red Fox? This looks similar in construction, which I guess is reasonable.
Interestingly the red fox was $40 more expensive but with only 40 more pieces. I think the second and 3rd builds with that set were better though. Happy with these cuties.

A good display piece together like that. Far more artistic prowess than I could muster ;).

But that minifig with the moustache.

Mansell had a face for a minifig.

The only better minifig would be David Coultard whose head looks like a lego head.

8 bags in, and I've reached the Heartbreak Hill now. I'm glad it has pretty small bags, because by bags 7 & 8, every bloody thing is black with a sticker on it. So it's a pain in the old fella to sort, and an even bigger pain in the junk to line up the stickers.

Starting to look good though. I haven't seen whether the slicks fit the Mclaren, but they're the same scale so I imagine they would (assuming the connection point and hubcaps are the same I guess). I might have to buy another pair of slicks. Although I'll need to remember to check whether the 2024 cars have further improved the tyres I guess.

Finished the Mercedes F1 technic tonight. The last few bags are exceptionally small, you knock them over quite quickly. Although I did have to go digging into the 3D instructions at one point.

- the slick tyres fit the McLaren, but they cost $22 a piece from Lego! Even Bricklink is expensive.

- the nose piece and the front wing on the Mercedes look so much better than the McLaren. The whole thing is just more detailed all around, it does a much better job of representing an F1 car's aerodynamics.

- while the McLaren is "secure", with a piece of the panel missing so you can see the engine operation, I was quite surprised that the Mercedes adopts some techniques of those $70-90 technic sets, in that it has an unsecure, removal engine cover - which I didn't like, I've put some additional pegs in it to secure it (which it appears designed for, cos those pegs were spare in the final bag, and there's a gap in the perfect, natural place to put those pegs); it also has hand of God steering, which I hate on a set at this level. As much as anything, it's completely unnecessary, the steering wheel is functional. And by including the hand of god wheel, you're taking away the little camera that's supposed to sit there. While I normally prefer to keep these sets "factory complete", I will likely come up with a fix for that too (if not just remove the HoG)

I do think they look great together. Seeing them next to each other, and seeing the improvements from the McLaren to the Mercedes, I'm excited to get and build the next 2 when they're available sub-250.

Edit: Shit. I was just trying to put this in the cabinet, and my Lego display has literally just fallen into shambles. I knocked one of the "notches" holding up the glass shelf, it fell, and while the glass shelf didn't break it's busted a bunch of Speed champions (as well as a piece of the Mclaren that I haven't been able to id yet.).

I don't quite know how bad the damage is, I'm too high to want to deal with it.

The "deep" breakages were pretty easy to identify, the more superficial stuff is going to depend on how I go with with the 3D images tomorrow. I think I have them all saved in the Builder app, so fingers crossed...

Went into the Lego Store today to see if they had any new releases built. Was most impressed by the 3-in-1 sets, including the Pandas Neese has already reviewed. I thought the dragon was especially good, but sadly was OOS. I do like the Blacktron set, but accept that it isn't for everyone. Didn't see Da Vinci built, but it does seem expensive for what you get. As always, the new Friends sets just knock it out of the park.

Big W just had a couple of aisles of empty shelves. Clearly the 2025 releases haven't reached them yet.

Got home, email from Myer with a selective 20% off offer, but including the new 3-in-1 sets, so ordered both the Dragon and the Pandas. Didn't even think to go into Myer when I was at the shops, haven't bought from them in ages.

Myer is strange to me, it almost seems to be a quasi certified store, in that it stocks plenty of stuff that is supposed to be exclusive.

Anyone else heading to Brickvention tomorrow or Saturday?

Got most of my breakages back together, I just have one 3-part piece that I'm desperately trying to find the home of. Any ideas? I've been through the instruction books seeing what uses these pieces, but some of the new ones don't have the piece list in the back.

I think each of the retailers gets access to one or a few sets as their own "exclusives" - sets which only they sell outside of Lego.com and the Stores. I don't think these sets are in that category though, it may just be they have their orders before the other stores do. It's most frustrating when you want a K Mart exclusive because K Mart stock management is some mystic voodoo, it's just easier to stump up RRP and order direct.

I'd forgotten about Brickvention, I keep promising myself I'll get to Melbourne one year when it's on but never follow through. I'm sure it'd be worth it.

All modern retail sets bar polybags will have an inventory list at the back. You may find you have some sets with multiple books and of course only one of these will have an inventory. Look up the ones you dont have on bricklink, they will have inventories there.

It's confusing the hell out of. I've found the piece on Bricklink, I've searched the sets that the pieces are from, I've been through those instructions, I can't for the life of me find it.

I'll have another go tomorrow.

With Brickvention, I was way to let getting in on the "adult legocon" that they do on Friday, but I'm looking forward to having a look around on Saturday. Hopefully the sellers aren't all pillaged.
