I have a terrible memory. I have very little memory of lego sets I had as a kid.

I was at Lobo's collectables in Thornbury this morning, and sticking out like dogs balls on the top of the shelf was one of the first sets I ever owned as a kid, an early police station.

It was overpriced, but if I had space I would've bought it in a heartbeat.

I don't remember having Lego as a child, but I do recall once seeing one of those big 60s wooden boxes full of bits, something of a real Aladdin's cave. It certainly wasn't mine though :(. Wonder how much an original one of those would be now?
My mum gave a fifty litre bin full of all mine and my brother's 70s and 80s Lego to a mate of hers kid.

My first police station set ended up on the bin because I left it on the floor!

Thought it was a bit rude to throw out the most expensive set they’d bought me.

But I had tonnes of lego as a kid, but don’t remember too many sets. I used to build wrestling arenas with it, but never any grand like the one you showed at Brickvention. Then one day mum gave it away when she decided I’d outgrown it. Then again she always assumed I’d outgrow Wrestling too…

I think that police station is probably (easily) the most expensive set that I ever got. I built mostly cars as a kid, anything bigger and my father would take it over.

Still, there used to be a big box of lego, and another box of instructions at my mothers place, I wish I'd taken it before she moved house and got rid of everything. Someone scored big.

Here here on wrestling.

Not much sport on today, I'm too old for hottest 100 parties. I ended up tossing a coin between the Friends Apartments and Endurance.

I'm 3 bags in and it's a fun build so far, cos it's so different to anything I usually build. I don't do houses or structures like this. You can do some cool stuff! (Haven't put the stickers on - I'm going to wait to see whether I'm keeping it first.)

Might do another bag or 2 after the basketball today, I'll see how I go.

This is really fun, the detail and easter eggs are nicely done.

I'm up to bag 6 now, which is the first one that I was missing, and that I've replaced with PAB pieces. The sorting shouldn't be too difficult - I was missing 2 bags, from 2 different apartments, so they're different colours.

I'm just dreading the possibility of missing something, so I'm not sure whether I'll keep going with it today.

It's in a box somewhere, I bought it when I found the Apartments for cheap, just before Central Perk retired.

I'd love to think of a way to display them together, but I haven't thought of it yet, I need to build them first.

I finished the guys apartment - I wasn't missing anything from the PAB order. Still knocking on wood, bag 11 is the next PAB lot.

The cameras are a quirky little addition, cos it's really the only thing from this half of the build that is on the other side of the 4th wall. I think I might start attaching stickers - I've never wanted to sell Lego once I've build it, I don't think this will be different. Can't believe how much detail they've crammed into it.

My 8yo is obsessed with Lego and the obsession is slowly permeating to my wife and me, along with our 5yo.

Odds on favourites to start my collection would've been something Star Wars, but couldn't resist these. Started with Senna for Father's Day and the current day McLaren for Christmas.

Welcome aboard. Great choices for first sets. There's no turning back now :p. For an 8-year-old and a 5-year-old the world of Lego is endless. Do let us know what their favourites are.

8yo has been into it since he was the higher end of 4. I'll have to snap some pics of his best sets. His obsessions come and go. Early on it was space, then pivoted to Jurassic Park/World, and now his last 2 sets have been Minecraft (though Jurassic Park still gets drooled over in the catalogue).

The 5yo is taking a little longer to really get into it, doesn't have quite as much patience as his older brother. He has a Young Jedi set, a Dreamz set and a small Jurassic Park one.

Looking at that McLaren I remember when the GP was here and the team gave out so many free stickers half the school kids in town were walking advertisements for Marlboro cigarettes.
I couldn't be bothered, but there are Etsy sellers that sell Marlboro stickers to suit this set (as well as tyres that are the right sizes) if you want it to look true to life.

That is a hilarious mental image though. I remember being a cricket obsessed kid and drawing the Benson and Hedges logo on every cricket picture I drew, not knowing what the hell it was.

Was going to suggest Dreamz, there's just so much going on in those sets, and they can be readily picked up discounted. I loved the Stable of Dream Creatures.

Just bought Blacktron from the Stores with a gift voucher I think that came with an earlier purchase, so that softened the damage somewhat - it's expensive for what it is but looks great fun.

Tell you what though, I have grandchildren into Sylvanian families and the prices you pay for that put Lego well and truly in the shade. Staggering.

Today is "Lego Day" - 28 January was the day that Lego first patented interlocking bricks.

Apart from MightyApe doing 15% off everything, there are no specials anywhere. Lego don't even have double points. It's being completely ignored... unless maybe there's a flash sale when it gets to midnight in Europe?

You planning to build it soon, or is it going on the pile for a rainy day? I'd love to see some progress pics.

Backlog is growing, but it must wait until the Christmas Village is dismantled. It's a long story ;) ...

I must remember to take pics of builds I'm a bit lax on that front and a rubbish photographer.

This Toy Mate drama with the Friends Apartments continues to be a pain in the ass.

I had 2x bag 8s, tipped them all out, had a shit ton of pieces left... it turns out the 2 missing bags were replaced with 2 completely random bags, of completely random pieces that aren't particularly useful. I think one of them is Ninjago, cos there are a lot of gold pieces.

When I find some time, and when I do some Bricklink research, I might part em out at rock bottom prices to start getting a profile together.

If anyone knows of a place where you can maybe search pieces by image, damn that'd be useful.

I'm through bag 12 now... which means I'm through bag 11, the 2nd one that I had to order PAB pieces for.

They've had me order some duplicates, including some particularly annoying ones that aren't cheap pieces (like a spare rowing oar.)

That's ok though. I'm very happy to have overcome the issues, and that I have all the missing pieces in one go, without needing a re-order or a visit to a PAB wall. It took longer than it should've - it was over 3 weeks of back and forth with Lego before I found someone who could locate a piece list - but I'm stoked.

Might put the stickers on it, prioritise a new cabinet, and find some new acrylic shelving...
