I would argue there is no way in hell hes a AFL ruckman. He was a first round pick for us in a poor draft. The problem is the club refused to obtain any other options apart from lobbe. We could have got Jacobs for a second round pick and this was after he played the game of his life in a AFL final. The club closed there eyes to anything going around like they did after we drafted Butcher. Years of drafting bum flankers will catch up with you. I have never been a lobbe fan but you cant blame him for our lack of bigman.

That's not entirely true is it.

Since we drafted Lobbe, we drafted Redden, Daniel Stewart, Cameron Cloke, Daniel Bass, Mitch Curnow, Dougal Howard, Billy Frampton and traded for Brent Renouf and Patrick Ryder. That's 9 guys that spent most/all their time in the ruck in 9 years.

Not really sure what point you're trying to make - no one's blaming Lobbe for our lack of talls. My point was simply that he's not an AFL player. Prime example being today in the magoo's - Billy Frampton's second half output after being moved into the ruck was almost identical stat-wise to Lobbe's first half. Frampton is a 19-year-old project ruckman who's just come off an interrupted pre-season.

Zero marks in a half of footy (for the Magpies today) when you stand two metres tall and are supposedly playing at a lower level just isn't good enough.

I can understand why people are having a whinge about list management but I'm really not sure that having a Mark Jamar/Robbie Warnock type bog average depth ruck around the club would really make a huge difference to our fortunes, even without Ryder and Lobbe. Sure, Doogs or Frampton is gonna get smashed coming up against Goldstein, Naitanui etc, but Jamar or Warnock would get smashed coming up against them too.

Don't even

Mate, if everybody had the same attitude to 'supporting' this club that you do, Choco would still be coach and Matt Thomas would be captain.

Terrible news for Lobbe - hopefully he can bounce back and get back out there by the end of the season.

I was pretty surprised we let Redden go and didn't at least rookie him, would've felt a lot more secure in this instance.
Redden's knee was shot, heard from his missus' best friend that in his last year the big fella struggled to get out of bed and do basic things like walking let alone train.

Massive shame because he had a hell of a lot of promise in the ruck/forward role we've struggled to fill since Lade retired, was a really great bloke too from all accounts.

Similar to Vardy at Geelong there's no way we'd have cut him if Burgo & co thought there was a chance we could work a miracle & get his body upto standard for AFL footy.

I am just so sick of player and coach bagging and negativity. I say take it week by week. Enjoy the wins as they come and also be aware we are decimated by suspensions and injuries to our best 22.

The horror...

The positive is our coaching panel will have to think about mixing things up

fingers crossed for Lobbe

Yeah I feel the same. Obviously we don't wish injuries on anyone but I had similar thoughts.

The club have no one but themselves to blame for this situation.

People had been pointing out for years that our list was short of ruckmen. Last year, however, it seemed we had finally struck a reasonable balance. We had a developing ruckman in Frampton, two ready-made ruckmen in Lobbe and Ryder, and a serviceable, albeit injury-prone backup ruckman in Redden. Given the waning form of Lobbe, a long-term suspension looming for Ryder, and the question marks hanging over Redden's longevity, it was obvious that we needed to recruit at least one backup ruckman over the off-season. We didn't need to unearth the next Gawn or Goldstein, merely a player who would be able to support Frampton in the SANFL and step up to AFL level should the worst ever occur.

Instead, what did we do? We delisted Redden and recruited no ruckmen in the rookie draft, gambling that the AFL would gift us a top-up player. Call it arrogance, call it delusion, call it what you want - because of this, we have been left with one developing ruckman to carry the load in the SANFL, and four part-time ruckmen to carry the load in the AFL, for half of the season.
Thats all good but essendon got replacements we should have also

What is with all our injuries? This is getting a bit ridiculous..... Had 27 hit outs before he went down in the second quarter. He was sorting showing something. Terrible luck for him and the team.

I wonder how many minutes each game trengove will play in the ruck now. I think a run around the middle and the leaping will help the guy as he will improve fitness, strength and most of all have an opportunity to take risk whilst holding the footy (being further up the ground).

Nothing wrong with some positive criticism. It is both healthy and a necessity for a club that doesn't want to accept mediocrity.

The stuff bordering on personal insults can gtfoh though.

Bad luck for the rock lobster, hopefully it's not the dreaded anterior cruciate. :'(

Re project ruckmen, there was a lot to like about Mason Cox yesterday even though he was stitched up by Nic Nat.
He moves very well for someone who hadn't picked up a footy until about 18 months ago.

We all know he can win a hitout.. Not so much too advantage and would be lucky to get 7 possessions or a mark all game..if his injury is this bad he'll only probably play a few more games for this club. Bad luck for the bloke
